  1. I'll snap a couple pics and post them here so people know what i mean
  2. It is smaller pieces, the weight would prob be 3-6 oz. It seems too think it use as linings for small projects and mostly i use suade or goat/pig skin or something similar to line
  3. Beautiful I love the vignette! May I ask how you get your corners so perfect? I've made a few of these but my rivets in the corners tend to be crooked
  4. So the title kinda says it all. I got some split leather and I honestly don't know what to do with it. I mean I normally do wallets, phone cases, etc and I don't know how split leather would work for that bc I can't tool it. Any ideas or tips??
  5. I'm a newbie and I feel kinda silly asking but how would I do a plaque?
  6. Won't a 3-5oz veg work? I wanna do a pattern on it for some friends to remember something together. Forgive me if i'm completely missing the point here
  7. I'd like to do some tooling on the font, can I do that with kangaroo leather?
  8. I have big issues with black water colored dye too. When I put a seal on it (no matter if I've buffed before to not) it always fades out and gets streaky (like some parts fade out so badly it looks light gray) and then rubs off on anything around it. I'm using Fiebing's Black dye (water based) and I normally seal with either Resolene or Fiebing's Leather Finish. Any tips? Would going to an oil dye help this?
  9. Thanks, how much allowance should I leave for seams? I always struggle with making my own patterns because I have either too much room or not enough room
  10. So I'm wanting to make a minimalist wallet. What weight leather should I use I have a 6-8oz but I'm worried that will be too thick. I'm also looking for a pattern if anyone knows of one I can get for free.
  11. Ehh, not bad! I love the vignette on the front!
  12. Honestly Tandy's products are just fine for noobs. They're cheap but relatively good quality. The sharpness of the impression also depends on the user (what you're using to pound, what you're pounding on, proper casing methods, etc). Weaver Leather has some great stamps and as mentioned Barry King is one of the major "go-tos" in leatherwork.
  13. Okay, I understand what you're saying. The load was a phone. I wonder though if it was a result of the edges curling up like Frodo said and something caught it repeatedly which caused the weak spot. Also, I've found that starting on the inside of the adds more play into the stitch which has been disconsterting to me. I agree, that my flap was too short. The edges were burnished although the edge bevel was irregular. Could you explain what you mean when you say "insist more on the interior faces"? In regard to the beveler, I did bevel my initial carving. Inside the flower, most of the lines (the three on each pedal) are decorative cuts and unbeveled. All other lines are beveled. Should decorative cuts be beveled? Thank you all for the input!
  14. I saw this Instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Leather-Rug/ the other day and I'd love to try it but I was thinking of using both chrome tan and veg tan, would that work?
  15. This isn't a tip, but that basketweave and the coloring is gorgeous!! I love how natural it looks
  16. As it has been said, it depends on what you're looking for. It also depends on what you're using for leather. I've made two chess boards from veg-tan leather. I calculated the size of each square and then adjusted my wing divider to that size and ran that across. After that I used a background tool to create a checkered appearance (backgrounded every other square) and dyed with two different colors. I can show some pics if anyone is interested. Looking back at that project (one of my first) I would have used a swivel knife before tooling. If you are using chrome tan than this https://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-Leather-Chess-Set/ might be a good place to start.
  17. Not to be nit-picky, but bees don't turn honey into wax. They produce wax from glands and sometimes pollen gets mixed in as well. Honey is their method of storing flower nectar as a super saturated sugar. Also, Neatsfoot oil is my go-to for leather.
  18. I'm a little confused about what you mean with the stitching, tsunk. I stitched around the entire project because I've got a lining in it and it looked better in my opinion. I stitched over the edges of my belt loops because otherwise you have a higher load on the thread and it's liable to snap (happened to me).
  19. This is my first commissioned leather project! It took me 12 hours (not counting drying time). I created the pattern myself, designed spcificlly for an iPhone 11 with an Otter Box Defender Screenless phone case. Anyone have any tips for me to consider in the future?
