I've been sketching and working a lot lately on a couple of new projects. Here is a prototype for a bushcraft style knife leather sheath for Fällkniven F1. The sheath is fully ambidextrous and customisable. Possibility for both horizontal and vertical carry. Modular design if user wants to add a fire steel or utility pouch. Buckles so the knife would be easy to add and remove from a belt or a bag. The straps can be removed and exchanged if necessary or replaced with cord or strap directly through the sheath. 2,5 mm vegetable tanned full grain leather, brass hardware, my first try with saddle soap polished edges. Fully modular design if user wants to add a fire steel or utility pouch. Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Hello everybody, I've been thinking of getting into leather working as a hobby, but also to fulfill my obsession with steampunk things. I have no idea where to start though. I would like to develop the skills necessary to make really cool steampunk masks, bracers, belts, hats, etc. but I don't mind starting small. Can you guys help me figure out what I need to get started? What tools should I get and what kind of leather? I do have a fairly low budget, can I get started with less than fifty dollars, or will I have to save up more before I can even start? Thanks in advance

Hello, I have inherited this Pfaff Industrial machine. As you can see in the images, the manual that came with the machine lists the Pfaff 491, 471 and 474. The machine is a Pfaff, and runs on compression from an Efka Variostop motor. The machine was running properly according to the last owner. This machine comes with the table and manual. For local pick up only. Knoxville, TN Please email brigid.ko(at)gmail.com with any questions, if you would like more images, etc. Thank you!

So, first post. I figured someone here might have a better idea of how to do this than me trying to destroy my working copy because i'm prideful. I'm currently trying to attach a piece of 5-6oz leather to the back of a 2oz leather bracer, via rivets and rubber cement, so that the edges of the thicker top piece wont curl. The major problem I am forseeing is that if I glue the pieces together while they are both flat, that when it comes time to wear the bracer, that it will be too rigid to get it to flex around my arm, even if i soak the piece in water. So far I have three ideas that *might* work; Firstly I was going to just glue the outside of the piece onto the base while everything is flat, add the rivets. soak it in water, and then try to form the whole thing on my arm. The "hold on a second" plan, as i started to think of it lately, was to wet both pieces, attempt to form them loosely, and then glue the top layer onto the backing as both pieces were wet and on my arm. Rivet to finish. Then I started getting out of hand by planning on glueing a strip down the middle, riveting top and bottom to get it to stay there, soaking, partial drying to get a surface the glue can grab, and then just glueing and sticking the piece down with pressure until it holds. I'm kind of at an impasse. Opinions please? Veg tan leather, dyed chocolate cherry, and tandy's rubber cement, pieces in the picture below.

Even in the 21st Century, the manufacture of leather retains an air of the dark arts, still somewhat shrouded in the mysteries of a millennia old, craft based industry. Despite the best efforts of a few scientists over the last century or so, much of the understanding of the principles of tanning is still based on received wisdom and experience. Tanning Chemistry : The Science of Leather Author : Anthony D. Covington Leather is made from (usually) the hides and skins of animals - large animals such as cattle have hides, small animals such as sheep have skins. The skin of any animal is largely composed of the protein collagen, so it is the chemistry of this fibrous protein and the properties it confers to the skin with which the tanner is most concerned. In addition, other components of the skin impact on processing, impact on the chemistry of the material and impact on the properties of the product, leather. Therefore, it is useful to understand the relationships between skin structure at the molecular and macro levels, the changes imposed by modifying the chemistry of the material and the eventual properties of the leather. This book aims to contribute to changing the thinking in the industry, to continue building a body of scientific understanding, aimed at enhancing the sustainability of an industry which produces a unique group of materials, derived from a natural source. The Science of Leather is the only current text on tanning science, and addresses the scientific principles which underpin the processes involved in making leather. It is concerned with the chemical modification of collagen, prior to tanning and the tanning reactions in particular. The subject is covered in the following order: collagen chemistry, collagen structure, skin structure, processing to prepare for tanning, the tanning processes and processing after tanning. The aim of the book is to provide leather scientists and technologists with an understanding of how the reactions work, the nature of their outcomes and how the processes can be controlled and changed. The objective is to synthesise a scientific view of leather making and to arrive at an understanding of the nature of tanning - how the wide range of chemistries employed in the art can change the properties of collagen, making leather with different properties, especially conferring different degrees of stabilisation as measured by the hydrothermal stability. Environmental issues are not treated as a separate theme - the impact of leather making on the environment is a thread running through the text, with the assumption that better understanding of the science of leather making will lead to improved processing. The book also reflects on the ways leather technology may develop in the future based on the foundation of understanding the scientific principles which can be exploited. It also includes a subject index, references and a glossary. The book provides the reader with insights into the role science plays in leather technology and provides fundamental understanding, which should be the basis for scientific and technological research and development for the benefit of the global leather industry. The book is aimed at students, leather scientists and technologists, in both academia and industry, in leather production and in chemical supply houses. Random Thoughts On Leather Used For Projects
wareagle posted a blog entry in WarEagle Leather Works' Blog
For me I use the best leather quality for the item I am making. I do and will continue to use seconds for a lot of projects reason is it gives the items being made a greater character than a perfect piece of leather, it also shows that the leather is real and not some man made genuine leather product. One thing I have discovered is a lot more chemicals are being used in the "Veg tanning" process when I started in the early 70's almost all the leather we used then was naturally tanned using plant extracts or were brain tanned (think chemicals are stinky try brain tanning a deer or elk hide) for a soft garment leather.
