A friend I've made knife sheaths for over the last couple of years just dropped off an axe. I've never done one of these before. I'm looking on line. I'm using 9-10 ounce vegtan, and I know that for this, I'm going to need a strap and snap. I can do those but I make knife sheaths that don't need them, cuz they're such a pain when you need to get your knife off or back on your belt. If you know something that might help me make a better axe cover, please tell. I really like the guy who brought it and I want him to have the best possible.

I decided it would be a good idea to make my daughter a belt for christmas. This is the final product, any advice on how to bring out the tooling better would be greatly appreciated. after the belt I caught the bug and purchased some leather. my next projects were sheaths for some knives and an axe, and a holster. I will post pictures of the other projects soon. Please give any advice on how to make my work look more finished. -
So well, I guess there is no need for two threads, so I´ll reduce it to one I had a work mate some time ago I came along with really nice and who teached me a lot for my daily job. So as we are both craftsmen and therefore like well (hand)made stuff I decided to make him a belt which turned out to be the best I made yet. For those of you who mention the different colour of the edge all along and the edge where the keeper sits (might be hard to see on the pictures... didn´t do a nice job on the pciture stuff this time): I started with the buckle using edge kote. But after that I visited my father who owns one of my belts and recognized, that the edge of hos belt - which I finished with some edge kote, too - was just fuzzy all along.... so I cried a little for help here, got some fingers pointed again on the thread "how to finish edges" and did it (nearly) as descriebed there... finally I got a nice (even nicer!) edge the with edge kote which hopefully should hold up much longer, as the only substance sitting on top is a really thin coat of Tan Kote finished with some parraffin. Thanks for that already guys! Acutally I never saw him since I gave it to him, but he was full of joy, so I assume the hours put into this piece were worth it. The belt itself is some 3,5mm belt croupon lined with some 0,8mm ... neck (I guess... ordered that seperately), hand dyed as always and handstitched with 8 SPI all around. The bucke is made of solid brass and the width is just about 38mm. As this is the second lined belt I made, I tried out some things like skiving the loop where the buckle sits down to the lining plus tapering the tip of the belt for a better sliding into the belt keeper. work worked just fine. The second piece is a sheath for a... "fancy" knife of a customer. He just wanted a simple sheath but made a lot more sturdier than his last one where the knife is hold by friction at least a little as is came out sometime before... The sheath is dyed with a light brown. After that I applied one coat of oil, let it dry and applied some heavy coat of my leatherbalm. The plan was to fit the handle colour of the knife which turned out quite good. I guess those are the moments where it´s good to know how the individual hide darkens when you use your "stuff (the balm) on it!! So always do a sample guys.... really! I guess If I didn´t know and wanted to be it light brown I´d have stuck in this head->table->head->table motion.... XD So here you see the difference between the old one the ne sheath As the blade got a little curve near the tip, it even cut a little hole into the old sheat... that was made poor and a little tight, so everytime the customer pushed the knif back into the sheath he unwillingly forced the tip into the leather.... poor little thing ^^ -
Just finished the sheath for my Armageddon Skinner and I thought that I would show it off. The handle is made of Macassar Ebony and the blade is made from 440c steel. Hardened to Rc57-58. Here are some photos hope you like them Vern -
So this is my first sheath this year, ment as a present for a good friend of mine. He got this old boatsmen knife (he teaches shooting for the german armed forces) and wanted me to make him a new sheath as the old one was starting to fall apart. This is what I came up with: And here you can see the old sheath (on the right) compared to the new one (on the left): The sheath is "butt-sewed" around a plastic inlay, I took from the old one. The knife fits in snugly and won´t come out without pulling it. Hope you like it

Hei! Here are some leather goods from Estonia. I've done this for about a month and fell in love with the craft. I used some traditional baltic patterns and some of my own ideas. Critique would be wery welcome! -
And here´s just a new sheath I made some time ago. Sadly I was a little late, so I didn´t get the chance to make some photos. Luckily, the new owner send me some I actually can use It is lined with loden and formed over a wooden model. The design was a special whish of the customer (including the knot-thing on the upper end). Hope you like it.

Been a while since I posted anything...let me know what's what, folks! First, a two-tone Avenger style holster for a 3 1/2" Ruger Bisley stainless steel Blackhawk 44mag (Lipsey Exclusive)...Saddle Tan with Basket Weave stamping over Dark Brown and White Thread...with a hammer thong and 2" belt slots. A special thanks to Clay Miller for the new stamp used on this holster...his ever-expanding line of tooling far exceeds my meager skills. Next, is a field holster for a Ruger Blackhawk 41mag..Saddle Tan with White Thread...simple oil finish...very rustic. Dual belt loop design allows for strong side or cross draw carry. Finally, a simple hand-sewn knife sheath for a Sharp (Japan) skinning/hunting knife...Saddle tan with White Thread. As always, I appreciate the input! -
Just finished another sheath this week for a small axe. I dyed the face and left the edge in natural oiled color. Hand stitched, and waxed with beeswax/neatsfoot mix Comments/critique is really appreciated.

So I got another order for a custom sheath for a larp-seax with some decent tooling: I know there might be just a few of you who are interested in the larp-scene, but as it is still some leatherwork, I´ll just post it here It´s lined with loden and made of 3,5mm cowhide. Colored, tooled and stitched by hand.

I made this sheath for a friend in Arkansas who runs a pawn shop and recently bought this handmade knife. The gentleman who makes the knives is excellent at making knives, but not as good at making leather sheaths! Then I made this holster from horse leather for an older Ruger Service Six .357 Mag. It is a nice older gun, and I tried to make a holster that was attractive and hand formed without being too fancy. He wanted something simple. -
So this is a comission I got a little crazy about as I just ruined it totally bye trying to harden it....-.- (and I made a test piece... -.-) So actually it had to be made twice. The second time I skipped the hardening stuff, just soaked it a bit and baked it on a lower temperature so it would get stiffer, but not hardened (and not ruined) All in all I am quite happy how it turned out due to the fact that this is my first attempt on celtic ornaments (others than just celtic knotwork). It is for a larp-sax, so it is not that thin. But anyway... hope you like it

Hi all - I've been a reader for awhile, but this is my first post. A gentleman recently approached me to make a sheath for a knife he had made for his grandson. I gave him a tentative yes, since I'd never made a sheath before, much less, one for a knife with such a thick handle. After many starts and stops, oops and do-overs, here it is! Here is my first attempt at a knife sheath. Its a double sheath to take two Butterfly Knives as used in Wing Chun Kung Fu. It's hand sewn through five layers of veg tan leather (two welts). I used Fiebings Oil dyes and finished with Carnauba Cream and then Aussie wax. Edges were smoothed and burnished. The Chinese characters are an old, traditional font and translate to WIng Chun (one of my other passions).

Heres a sheath I made for a Crocodile Dundee knife. Its veg tanned leather and crocodile with kangaroo lace around the border. Handle braids and sharpening spike lanyard are kangaroo.

Just finished up a knife this past weekend and got the sheath done tonight. Not fun working in an unheated garage shop this time of year, but progress none the less.

I am working on some practice pieces, and I was given a straight dagger to make a sheath for. I found some images online of dagger sheaths that have the style that I am looking for, but I am unsure on how to achieve the form. I know how to wet mold, but how dose one get the pointed end like on these sheaths? Thanks!

Hi there, even if I think that a lot of you are mainly interested in stuff for other areas, i just wanted to show you two sheaths I made for a larp sword and a larp sax. Sadly the leather isn´t that good quality so the tooling came out quite unsatisfying. Gotta find a better leather-source.... Bot are wetformed by using a wooden model an lined with loden. The fur is from a goat. Hope you like it

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I posted anything, so I figured I'd do a quick update while the coffee is brewing. This is just something I wanted to do. I've been doing a lot of "production" type stuff and I needed to take a break and do something that would challenge my artistic side. I like it and I look forward to making more art pieces. This is a mouse pad I made for a Jewish friend. Happy Hanukkah! A fun journal cover I made. I've been watching a ton of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones lately. Does it show? Simple folding money clip/wallet. A nice dress belt. An ex-serviceman contacted me about making this wallet for him. I was really excited to do it, told him not to worry about a deposit, and got after it. I tried to ask him what he wanted in the banner and he never got back to me. After it was finished, he never got back to me. Still haven't heard from him. Valuable lesson learned. A Harley belt I did for a co-worker. The eagle was done with mostly a modeling tool. It was my first time using one and now I realize how indispensable they are. My pups Christmas gift. My brothers Christmas gift. The knife was something my late father gave him. Making this belt and sheath was really special for me. A couple more of the folding wallet money clips. These are also special to me. They are two of six items ordered from me to be carried in a local retail boutique. First time my stuff is being carried in a store. And now I'm in the market for a sewing machine. Business has really picked up and I'm struggling to keep up with orders and work a full time job. A sewing machine would really help me out and broaden my horizons a bit too. I'd love to start doing costumes and bags. Any suggestions? Any helpful hints on my work? Thanks for looking!! -
Just wanted to show off my knife sheath that I made for the knife I made. For a little back story on the knife. It started life as a ferriers file I layed out the design I wanted and cut it out. cleaned it up and ground down the file aspect of it. Worked the cutting edge down with a file not all the way to were it was sharp but sharp enough that after the heat treatment process was done it didnt take a lot of effort to get a sharp edge. After it was heat treated found a nice piece of wood and made the handle for it. and found a Brass rod cut three piece to put in the handle as well. worked the handle down to where i wanted it to be. then put a sharp cutting edge on it. Since I finished the knife I needed a sheath to carry it in. So grabbed some leather and got to work on that. Nothing to special about the sheath. The tooling is off a bit casue I did some last min. changes. I was going to stitch it but then decided to do a triple loop lace on it instead so some things are off. But it is for me so I was not going to start over. sorry for the long story. Thanks for looking. Hope you like it
