So I made my first full box (I've made small ones with wooden lids before). I was originally hoping to have it so the top and bottom hinged together, but I would have needed to use thicker leather for it to work well (or glue another layer inside), and more importantly, take into account that all that surface tooling on the lid would significantly expand it. Turns out it made it the perfect size to slide over the bottom, so it's not a complete loss. Next time I'm doing all the lid decorations, *then* cutting the sides and bottom. Also made the sides out of one long strap, and it would have been easier on me if I had just cut each side separately and done a tiny bit more stitching. If I had more time, I would have lined the interior, but as it was I ended up waxing it the day it was given out. I included a pic of the sides before I stitched them, I'm sure you'll recognize some standard stamps. ;)

Hello. I'm Sheila from Ticino, South Switzerland. I'm a beginner self-taught leather worker. I have a lot to learn, but I'm not afraid by mistakes. I hope to make some good courses as soon I can, for the moment here some of my works. I love to make bags: in the first picture the first one I made as gift for my mom. Now I'm working on my first prototype, almost finished. second picture: A small box and after some eyeglasses case I designed. At the end a keyring. all Giftes. All hand crafted, with the best veg tan leather from Tuscany. I made myself also my cardboard packaging. I hope you like them. Here my Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/orikawa.atelier_leather

I swear I had been mulling over making a box by riveting it before I saw Retswer's at http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/76655-riveted-rivet-box/ , that being said I did take some tips from what was said on his thread and made sure to skive my flaps down. This is a pretty small box, less than 2" x 2". The lid is actually wood from mitered frames with a scrap of leather glued onto the bottom. I think it turned out pretty well for a mach 2 (mach one turned out to not be feasible)

So Windrider's posts on making boxes lit a fire under me, since they coincided with me fiddling around with something at work. When cutting moulding on a miter saw, you end up with triangle shapes. If you get four of them and put them back to back, the rabbet of the moulding ends up pointed out and makes a snazzy lid! This is my first attempt, I happened to have some burgundy latigo scrap and one of the lids that went nice with that color, so I went at it. I'm frankly astounded that it turned out as well as it did, since I completely guessed at the height/angle of the curve for the sides. I cut the edges at an angle (which was a challenge) and saddle stitched them together, then burnished all the edges. The lid pops right in but not so snug that it's a pain to get on and off. Size is 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" by 2" tall.

Hi I have a question I search the internet and some books and I can't find complete tutorial how to saddle stitch a box from individual parts of leather. The closest I get is Al Stohlman "The Art Of Hand Sewing Leather". Round box is well explained as well as one piece box but individual parts are not. Box have four sides and bottom (all edges on 45°) So I wander should I stitch like round box (stitch one side and one bottom side with back stitch on the end of each bottom side) and do it four times or there is some more correct way to do it? ... there is a video on YouTube from "Armitage Leather" but it's not well explained Regards Aleksandar

I make a lot of boxes with mitered and sewn corners. I normally make wooden forms to wet-mold them to perfect squares. I make different sizes and I got sick of pulling out the table saw. I found something better. Target has a version of the Jenga game...small identical wooden blocks. I creatively place them inside and make it tight with scrap leather. Another benefit is that they aren't as difficult to remove as a form. Remove one from the center and they all come out easily. I told my wife I'm an genius...she's still skeptical.
