So I've been going crazy the last month making garb and other sundries for the SCA event I went to, which means lots of leftover scraps. I hate throwing anything away, so I came up with a little pouch made of a scrap of leather for the base and a band of linen from something or other. The bead is one I made in lampworking, works pretty well as a stop. Thinking on it, I realized that a good way to use up torn up jeans is to cut off the bottoms and use those as the walls of a sack, just turn down the raw edge and make a new hem, sew on a leather bottom and add a cord! Minimal sewing and you used up some stuff that might have gotten thrown out.

I have spent hours and hours reading threads on threads!! It seems I purchased a new spool of Barbours #6 Natural Unwaxed LEFT twist linen thread. After lots of different posts I believe I should have bought RIGHT twist since I am right handed. Is there any chance of a Lefty out there that has a spool of Right twist 5 or 6 thread that would be willing to trade. there is about 2 ft missing off of this roll, but I'm not sure I want to wrangler this spool for as long as it will last me!! Or maybe someone that is getting ready to order left would order right and swap. I can't afford to buy another spool and have this one too. I am hoping someone out there can help me on this one. By the way I boulght this off and individual so can't return it, it is in the original box and bag. Thanhks Paul

Red and Black, Friend of Jack! Getting better... I kind of like the stitching on this one. I used Campbell's Satin Laid 332 Linen thread, red, on black leather for a cool contrast. YinTx© YinTx

Reverse side of stitch, so thread is reversed: Tiger, then 132, 332,532 linens. This side is more dependent on the awl and my ability to control it than the pricking iron, with the exception of the last row, which used a punch to go completely through the leather. YinTx© YinTx

So before I purchased my stitching irons and hand stitching thread, I searched around for comparisons of the different threads and irons and how they looked side by side. I watched all the Armitage videos, but did not see all the different samples side by side to actually make a comparison. I have seen one or two comparisons of different brands of threads, but nothing that allowed apples to apples and apples to oranges looks. So, I made a card that compared 7 different stitching irons, all around 7 SPI, some 4MM, and using 3 different sizes of linen thread (Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread), and 1 Ritza Tiger thread 0.6mm for comparison. The 0.6mm Ritza and 7SPI seem to be a common combination, and linens are fairly common too, so I thought this would be a good place to start. If someone wants to see a particular combination, with a different type of thread or SPI, let me know and I'll see what I can do. It was interesting to me to see how different the marks were, yet how subtle the differences were in the actual pattern of the stitch. I am not a master stitcher yet, so some of the differences are no doubt due to my inconsistencies, but I think it is somewhat clear which irons do and don't work with which threads. The 132 thread is some pretty heavy stuff, but I enjoyed working with it and really liked how it came out on some of the rows. I still need some practice to get the back of my 532 stitching to be more even, but some of it is passable, I think. I hope this comparison is useful to someone out there. The various irons used on each row, top to bottom: Old Joseph Dixon 7SPI Abbey England EconoStitch 7SPI CS Osborne 609-7 7SPI European Style Stitching Iron from Ebay 4MM Kyoshin Elle 3.5MM Ebay stitching iron 3.85MM (about 7SPI) Ebay Stitching Punch 4MM Thread used from Left to right when viewed from the top of the stitch: Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 532, beige Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 332, beige Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 132, beige Ritza Tiger 0.6MM braided polyester thread, Cream Front side and back side images before tapping down with a hammer, and after. Made a wallet using two things I hadn't gotten to use yet... maybe should not have used them together, but the result was interesting. Big thread, small hole! 332 Campbell's Satin Laid Linen thread, and Joseph Dixon #10 pricking irons. Slow going for sure. YinTx© YinTx

All the stitching is done, still need to tap down the stitches and trim the ends and finish burnishing the edges! Happy to say I had a bit of a breakthrough today on the evenness of my stitch backsides. Not perfect yet, but big improvement. YinTx© YinTx

Today's effort. This is a shot of the the backside of my stitching, using Barbour 18/3 linen thread. Changed technique ever so slightly, showed some improvement on the backside. Still not as nice as I'd like, but happy there is a step in the positive direction. YinTx© YinTx

On the left, is a strap showing the reverse or back side of the stitching, prior to trimming the threads and tapping down. On the right is the front or top side of the stitching, also before trimming or tapping down. For me, this is a big improvement. There are fewer "fat" and "skinny" stitches, the reverse side is straighter, and has a much better "lay." It was obvious from the previous images that I was having difficulties keeping the awl even and exiting with the same sized holes. I made a lot of adjustments to get here, but the main things were: Increased lighting: 4 ea 100 watt bulbs seemed to help me see what I was doing better. Putting a LOT of wax on the thread drastically improved the "twisting" I was experiencing, and reduced the "fat" and "skinny" stitches. Keeping the exit hole as small as possible also helped. To illustrate my frustration on the back of my hand stitching. The vertical row is on the backside of the stitch from gusset panel to front panel. They tend to "wobble" a bit, and I would like to get them more even. I have another photo from today's efforts that shows some improvement. YinTx© YinTx

Finally taking shape. Still have to stitch the back panel and the straps, and finish burnishing the edges. Easy to see the "streaky" dye job. Will try a sponge or small rag next time to see how it goes on. YinTx© YinTx

Two different colors I came up with mixing Fiebeng's dyes. Used machine thread on large phone case, Cambell Randal's waxed linen on the ipod cover. This was the first time I have used this thread, I liked it but I think maybe a bit large for such a small item. YinTx© YinTx

Hey guys, I have 6 brand new and unused 50gr spools of Lin Cable in the 532 size (same size Hermes uses). I bought them for a project and realized on arrival that they wouldn't work for what I want to do so I'm trying to recoup some of the cost. These came directly from Sojou in France, the ecru and Hermes orange color took a month to arrive due to demand. The yellow has had maybe a few feet removed from it, other than that these are all 100% new. Thanks guys! Price: 200 USD for all 6 Shipping: FREE CONUS Payment: PayPal + 4% PPal Fees

I'm looking for a reliable supplier of 332 - 632 Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread in the full range of colors. It's a venerable thread mill, yet its products are somehow difficult to find. Same with wholesale Caldwell. They make an unwaxed 18/3 that I can't find anywhere. US or EU is fine. Thanks much.
