Hi i am working on making leather fire helmet shields and had a few questions. Made my first one the other day but having a hard time with the beveling with it leaving alot of uneven marks. Any suggestions on how much to wet down the leather or how to start so that its more even? not sure if im wetting the leather to much or possible not cutting my lines deep enough before i bevel? Any suggestions/ tips would be great thanks!

This one is the 80/20 (seam NOT down the middle) shield in 9mm and/or .40. Or maybe 75/25? Hoping to get the shield .45 out soon ...

NEW TO THIS FORUM! I want to start making my own fire helmet leather shields for friends and family but I'm not sure what equipment I need to get started. I would like to stamp the letters and carve the artwork myself. What type of paint do I use and tools should I buy? thanks all! I attached a picture of a helmet front I did in like 30 minutes. I was testing Ideas... -Alex

I want to start making fire helmet shields, however, I don't have letter stamps yet. In your opinion, what are some good fonts or sizes for stamps? My goal is the find ones that make the letters look raised. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I've been a member for awhile now, but haven't posted anything, mostly because when I signed up I was very green in the leather world (still am). I am a 17 year veteran firefighter in a major city, and decided to combine my career and my hobby. Six months ago I made a custom leather fire helmet shield for myself, when I put it on my helmet I immediately got questions about it. That turned into a flyer, which turned into a website. I have now built over 120 shields, having them in departments from California to New York. It has been a whirlwind experience to say the least. I felt like now was the time to finally post some pictures here, where I got a lot of great tips and inspiration. If you would like to see more, you can go to bighammershields.com Thanks, Ryan

Hello everyone, I am brand spanking new to the leather world! I have just started making leather fire helmet sheilds and so far, so good! Once I was done cutting and tooling the leather, I painted the whole shield white and waited for it to dry. I then came back and painted the background and a bugle on it in back and silver, and to my surprise turned out pretty good for my first time. Every thing to this point has been painted with eco flo, cova color. I then tried putting on super shene and within 2 strokes of the brush the paint started to smear. I have seen several post describing this and one of the biggest things that are mention is buffing the leather. I have tried to buff it and it doesnt seem like anything is coming off, so I am not really sure what to do at this point. Now understand that these shields will endure temps of over 1000 degrees at times. I need to know what I can put on them to seal them from the elements and looking for any advise from others who have made sheilds in the past. Also, am I using the wrong paint, I have seen some people have used 1 shot oil based enamel? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First time doing a front piece for a fire helmet, so I did it for my own helmet to see how it would hold up to some rough work. I want to know what you think and I'll drop the template to whoever wants it!

Hey There, First let me say thanks to all of the guys who have already posted threads about this topic. I am a full time firefighter here in Ma. I am also a custom pinstripes, sign painter and hand lettering guy. Do a lot of Gold and Silver leafing as we'll. I wanted to try my hand at making or painting custom leather fire helmet shields. With all of the information posted here I was thinking maybe it would be easier for me to post this and have a central location with all of the info. here as opposed to referencing multiple threads. So my questions is this: if all I want to do is paint shields. What do I need to know, what materials do I need and where do I start. If I want to make custom shields, same questions? Thanks in advance for your patience. FF JM

Recently started playing around with leather working and decided to make some leather fire helmet shields for a few guys at work. There not perfect but after a little heat they should look perfect.
