3D Illusion laser engrave

Recommended Posts

Before any of you give me a bad time about laser engraving in lieu of carving these two pieces of leather........

Hear me out. I have developed severe Arthritis in practically every joint in my body so handling most any kind of carving or otherwise tool is extremely difficult or impossible.

With that said, I bought a 60W CO2 laser about two years ago and have laser engraved some really fantastic products of which I have sold a few and given away a lot. Hadn't done any leather until this last week. Used some semi-scrap I had to do these two pieces. Veg Tanned cowhide 3oz to 4oz.

Forgive my expertise in photo work, I didn't bother to correct. There is no editing done on the photos. As said above they are 3D Illusions not true 3D.

The laser sees the different values of light and dark in a black and white photo as set into program before engraving. As the beam travels across the substrate/leather it varies in power and develops the light and dark portions of image.

Hope you enjoy....

Damn, that first one is very impressive, remarkable texture and detail! The second one's not bad either.:)

It may not be "traditional carving" but we do what we can and this way you are still making stuff.:specool:

I think it's pretty cool. I carve and stamp, a d enjoy it. But, would really like the versatility of a laser. Nice work!

Good for you @Ferg.  Glad to see you back at it.  Hopefully the laser is on the main level of your home so fewer stair trips.

I would love to be able to do something just near that beautiful.

Been talking to Bert03241 about lasers . . . getting ready to jump in . . . will have to be diode only as my cash is not far enough the ladder for a CO2 job.

Gotta take the wife on a short trip . . . will be mulling over the laser question . . . hopefully make the jump the next week.

Do you have that cowboy scene where you could send me the JPEG of it . . . or whatever your initial image was.  I'd love to mess with that . . . plus got a David and Goliath scene I want to do.

But seriously . . . love your work . . . keep it up . . . you're doing great.

May God bless,

Dwight

Nice! I have done a few on Baltic Birch. Problem I have with it is the veneer is so thin the laser get's into the cross band while engraving subject.
