Made a sheath for my 8 year old nephew's first knife.
The kid is into Lord of the Rings so made it look 'elfish', and even gilded the carving with 23 karat gold leaf.

Yes, he's lucky but he's eight so probably won't know it for at least ten years or so... :)

True words. I'm 64 and I'm still figuring out how lucky I am! At least my trophy wife tells me regularly that I am.

I used knives and guns when I was very young - from about the age of 11 - and I started my kids shooting when they were around 8 years old.  Too many people around now days that are horrified at the thought of an 8 year old touching a knife or gun, even under adult supervision.  Most of these types are in the bigger cities....

I honestly believe that it's everyone's responsibility and right to know how to use blade and boomstick. You never know when you may need to eat to survive or deal with varmints

+1.
The 3 Bs: Blade, Boomstick and Bushcraft.
To build skills and a respect for nature, should be required in all schools up to college. Then mandatory military service.

You just made that kid's childhood. Remember when you were a kid and an adult did a stellar thing for you? You are that adult to your nephew right now. Awesome!

That would be great, but I don't know, kids these days have too much going on all the time. But at the moment I'm a leatherworking hero to him and his family...

Yeah, I forget how different being a kid today is as opposed to having been one 35+ years ago.

With the risk of going off topic, which I can do as I started the thread:

Kids are no different today than they were 35 years ago, or 100 years ago or 500 years ago.
Parents, school, society etc just treats them like the adults that they're not, which messes them up.
That's the short version, I could go on about this but this is a leather forum....

Even shorter version: Yeah, you're right.
