Lots of stuff Jim. Great for hammering metal into shape, it keeps out the hammer dings mostly and helps support the shape. Also shot bags are great weights for holding down large pieces of leather to help keep from curling:) There are also many other uses but that is what I can type the fastest.

  11. Pretty sick, bro....that is a awesome seat!! Your braiding is so tight and even...looks like a machine done it! on ur carving I noticed it is not as deep and three dimensional... that works great with the floral scroll design, sort off Italien looking,,,....love it....the colors as always...stunning. Guess its time to step up front for u.....these seats are no hobby Projects anymore....1450cc rock.....haha....but 276cc by all means too!! Great work...keep it coming!! Jimbob
  12. Airbrush finish...easy to apply...but eventually will rubb off. Dye can't penetrate, so it just sits on top of grain...but shure looks cool!! Aloha James
  13. Maybe a good point...hmmmm...will see and try different medias to fill...lead shot shure is more expensive then rice...haha..... Well, lets get going and make some shotbags....will post pictures...I keep u posted! James

NICE, love the microphone on the back...seems like it want's to jump right out of the wallet!! Very good shading and use of color...wonder if the inside is home made or pre-cut store bought...very cool work!!
  19. Late quote I carve seats and use 3-4 oz and it "POP's" out big time!! Need good leather and sharp knife !! Greetings James
  20. Dang, Ironhead and Ironpounder...seems like there is other dudes out there needing one too...about the gastank between ur knees and working it with two hammers...cool!! There are indeed many ways to achive dents into metal the way you like...I have seen people do amazing things with just a hammer and a tree stump! I like the idea of having a shot bag myself....so many things a man can shape....and it be real cool to try my hand in upper level met fab... Velcro, I have seen that not shure if they stay closed when hitting hard.....I thought about a long funnel tube sewing in and fold it backwards...closing it with a Chicago screw??? Main thing is the sand needs to stay put...rice , in my opinion should not work well...guess after a few uses it will fall apart to almost powder..?! Maybe we have some folks here in the forum can join in and maybe show some pictures...Dang, after all this is a real cool place where people help each other! Thank you folks for the first replies.... Ohhh......and where I come from , sorto'( SW VA ) Dang....is not a bad word...hahaaa.....(means...>> dangling your thought's for a second or two.....!!) Greetings Jimbob
  21. Been asked to make some shot bags for ny riding buddies....they all built there own scooters and now we are making gas tank panels ( Indian Larry style..?!) So making a circular or square bag is not a problem I thought....then I read that it needs mostl likely some refill, due to sand or shot changeing into smaller particles when hit... So a funnel is a must to refill sand or lead shot....I think I like sand better..?! How could I sew a funnel that can be reopened or securly closed when bag is used....also would a pancake pattern be ok, or should a shot bag have a skirt ...kind da like a cake looking...? Would you have the seams outside or do they need to be turned in...? Anybody ever made a shot bag...please share some ideas.. Thank you Jimbob
  22. And Heck, who cares if it does 1/4 inch or a bit less...does it do wallets or even a belt??...just use it and love it....look at the beautiful form and style, nickel plated parts....eyeball the wonderful metal and artistic paint and assure yourself that you own a bit of American Industrial history...right there in fron of your eyes...and yes, it is still able to sew...after soooooo many years of possible hard labor!! Kind of opening unkle Bill's long locked up barn door and discovering a dusty, covered up with hey bales ladden 1944 Flathead, all original parts and when u digg it out there, brush the dust off and whipe it down with a bit of oil,,,,you set the kicker, realize it has compression....quick new plugs, check oil and a bit of gas...a kick, another kick,,,and one more....><><><> She's alive...she is realy alive.....ohhh my,...........I got carried away..sorry...but ya all get the pint...hehee.... Greetings james
  23. Not much, because you altered a collectors item...if there is such thing for a mailbag...but the new/old bag looks cool, so keep it, enjoy it and use it too!! Nice work... James
  24. I second some of these replies....get a good round or head knife and learn how to use it!! Not hard if you try...been doing my cuts up to 15oz for many years with a shoe makers blade...works great! Then I made a commitment that if I call myself a leather worker I will use a traditional knife to cut....a round knife!! And guess what, I love it and it is the only knife I use for 90% of my work!! Keep it extremly sharp, learn how to sharpen any knife in ur shop.....then use it like a pinstriper would do...( I dabble a bit in pinstriping..) look ahead of the actual cut...feel where u cut and get used to the "slide" when cutting ...so you wont over cut or put to much pressure on the tip....practice, practice and then some more...! A good blade has good steel, u will know the difference when sharpen and when u cut....good knives dont come cheap, but your grandkids will fight over them...haha... A good used older brandname head knife can be found at leather shop sales, ebay and sometimes at estate sales. Lets go cut some leather.... Aloha
  25. Very nice work, bold, clean and pro looking....like the color and the tooling a lot!! Dont care much bout lacing on a knife sheat,,,not practical especially outdoors....but looks cool...haha Greetings James
