I recently purchased one of Duane's SK2 knives like the one pictured in the Youtube video above. While I found the construction to be perfectly acceptable, I too found the blade to be difficult to use. It seemed to to drag in whatever type of leather I tried. The sharpening was good. I stropped and polished it until I decided that was not the problem. I finally ordered a custom replacement blade from Henley Mfg. in Shreveport, La. I have yet to find another blade material that performs as well in any kind of leather I have ever used. Be advised however that the blade shaft of the Watt's knife is non-standard so any other blade will not fit into the barrel without machining the blade shaft to the diameter dimensions of 0.186 inches. Age and arthritis has taken some of my manual dexterity so I also have found the ability of tighter control has been helpful in several projects.

I can recommend this eBay seller. I bought one his "vintage" leather knives similar to the one in this listing and about the same price. I could be wrong as I do not own one one of each, but I'd still bet it's very likely Ivan was supplying and custom branding the "Stohlman" knife for Tandy. I will certainly agree you can't go wrong with a Henley. Excellent knife with great blades.

These are photos of the finished stamp rack. I used red chestnut oil stain with 3 coats of polyurethane. Not too bad I think for what started out as a truck wheel chock.

Thanks eglideride. The block face is actually 16" tall x 6-1/2 wide x 3-1/14" deep. With the back tilt, height from the desktop is 14 ". The footprint is 10" deep x 6-1/2" wide. The height was determined by what I could look at comfortably and to allow it to slide under a shelf on the top of my work desk. I live in an apartment and my work area is in a small bedroom with very limited space.

I'm working on a new stamp holder and thought I'd share a few photos of it in progress. Solid oak, 13" tall, with a 30 degree back tilt. Stamp holes were drilled 2-1/2 inches deep, and swivel knife holes were drilled 1-3/4 inches deep. It will hold around 150 stamps when completed, 5 swivel knives, and 10 swivel knife blades. I still have finish sanding, sealer, oil stain, and polyurethane yet to go. I'll update with a photo of the completed piece. I have a pdf of the drill pattern if anyone would like a copy.

I have two of these knives, both marked Shapleigh Diamond Edge, and both have performed very well. They have maintained an edge well with only occasional stropping needed. They do not carry the collector value the Osborne knives do, but for a working knife I find them both extremely acceptable. I think you did very well.

When I started I was 110 miles from the nearest Tandy location and there was no one around to ask and nothing like the great folks on leatherworker.net to learn from. If it wasn't for a brother in law I could ask for some guidance, I might would have given up as well. As you can see, my first attempt was pretty bad. Stay with it. We have all been there.

You might want to consider checking an auto parts or hardware store for different sizes of clear vinyl tubing. My experience with it in small engine use is it has not shown a tendency to collapse with age and retains it's flexibility and "roundness". Should be able to taper the ends nicely as well. Just a thought.
