(while chewing a mouth full of the last doughnut) No, no let Clay sleep. He calls sleeping in his " leatherworkers rest". I searched and searched for a forums like this. I just knew it had to be out there somewhere. I could not find anything like this. The closest i could come was diff motorcycle forums. Where i would admire the seats people would do and ask them questions. Not all where eager to tell there " secretes". Then one day i found a TLF just a few miles from my house. I asked a few questions there and i was lead to a aisle that had shevles. Shevles full of books, books full of "secrets". Oh the joy ! the glories joy. The joy a 6 year old is full of christmas morning when they see that Santa came. Then very soon the reality hit....hit hard...so hard it bounced in fact. Theres too much, too many. How will I, how can I ?? I'll never be able to read them all. How will i know which one will answer the question i have right now. What if i have a question and i don't have that book and the store is closed .... i need that book...ahhhhhhh...Sure RAdio Shack answears the phone " you got questions , we've got answers" but they don't know butt itch about leather...So how can the say that !!!!?? Then i started searching the web again. I found another so called forums for leather craft. Pretty empty yet wide open forums with just one section. Making tring to find a subject pretty much "NOT". But,,,somehow i found a post that was titled something about another leather workers forums by no other then Johanna. Could it be, was this for real, you mean there truely is a Santa. AS my heart raced and feet started tapping , it seemed nothing was fast enough, My connection was just as fast as always but at this time it just did not seem fast enough. I click the mouse a hundred times to fallow the link this one sent from the skys posted. That's when i learned never stop believing, there is a Santa !!!! Merry Christmas Butt Itch !! I check these forums a few times everynight when i'm on the pc. lately i can't keep up with all the new post. That's a good thing a very good thing. Even more so for the begin hobbiest like myself. When i think of something i want to do, it does and will allways bring up questions. It's becoming that 8 out of 10 times i can find my answer by searching. Also most of the time i find in the same post ; although i don't know it yet the answer to the next question i'm about to have. Thank you Johanna for starting these new friendships i'm building. And to me that's one of the things that make up a great forums, FRIENDSHIPS ! I'd also like to take this time to thank all of those that post here and that share there knowlegde so quickly. Ya'll are what makes up the forums. THANKS !!

I did a guitar strap using British Tan after seeing the color on a wallet at TLF. Mine came out so much darker then the wallet, i thought no way was it the same color. I too used it with a dauber. I'm starting to notice evertime i use a dauber it comes out dark. I've always had a hard time getting the desired shade of a color i'm after. A few days later i tried my hand at the British Tan again. This time i cut pieces of a sponge up into ruffly 2"X2" squares. I would get the pieces and get them both moist. Add stain to one and rub it on and if needed go back over it with the other one. It came out much, much lighterr in color and even. Of course this would not work very well for small areas but it's been working well for me. Know take note i'm still new to this so i'm just telling what has worked for me on something i've had the same results with. Your friendly neighborhood freak

That's flippin sweet !!!! Looking forward to seeing the finish piece.

I've made a few wristbands so far. I have never done anything to the edges or the back in fear of getting rubb off on my wrist or the person that's wearing them. So i just finished making one for myself that i lined with doe skin. I used EDGE KOTE to finish out the edges and the backside of the strapes. The strapes are very stiff, so stiff that when i bent them to put on the wristband they cracked. KNow i don't mind, to me it looks , ummm, weathered like and i dig that look. What caused this ? the rest of the band is just fine. So i figure it's the EDGE KOTE. How can i soften them up ? Should i just dye the strapes in full and the edge of the band and then seal it ?? Thanks

I rub my stomach and yell out " Hello dinner" ! Then i think, I'de tool that. LOL

Very, very nice work. Man those are tight all around. Very clean and i love the colors. The lace and sticking are beautiful. Most of my designes are more based on the tattoo or graffiti type of art. When i've got a image in my head i can't get on paper i like to look around on tattoo sites . It helps me get past that block or come up with something new. Very nice work David.

Thanks all !! Clay, sometimes i have to step back and question myself or stop myself. If i don't watch it i think i'll put flames and skulls on everthing. Johanna or anyone that is thinking of making a wrist/arm band for when you're welding or fabricating. Make sure you use snaps. If a spark gets between the leather and you,,,,you can not get the leather off fast enough. The other day this happen to me. Since then (as you can see on some of the w/bands i've posted) that even though i like to use the straps and buckles. The buckles are snaped on.

They're to busy to listen and if they did then what would they rally about .? You should send them and invite to the forums here. Tell them most of the stuff they see here was done while the leather was still on the animal and alive. We call it eXtreme leather working. I love animals.... They taste great !!

nothing great here just a few things i've done lately. I figure the more i do the better i'll gt rite, rite ?? LOL Mostly wristbands: the bulldog for my daughter (school mascot) , cross for my wife , the one brown one with all the skulls is the one i work in ( i'm a welder and tired on my wrist getting burned, so it'll get more burn marks on it as time goes on and i think add to the looks ) , then there's 2 of a band logo that i dig and a 3rd of the band logo that's not done yet with skulls in the background. I'll be seeing the band next weekend and i'll give them to the guys then. Oh yeah and one of the first guitar strap i did, it's the one with half a skull. Like i said nothing great really.

looks very clean and tight. Nice work !! Did you make the hawk also ?? -
Thanks for the tips. I really haven't done much leather work lately. When i made the wirstband that brought up this question i thought to one of myselfs; Jeez am i getting worse with every project i do or what ? Then i got to thinking about the replies i got here. The last few things i've done , i've done at night. Although i tried not to go to fast i still rushed to get it carved and tooled before bed. AND yes light, i was always moving to try to get better light. Even had one of those 5 LED light strips that you clamp to the bil of a hat. For me the LED lights,,,,,well not so much.. Today i did 2 more wristband just like the other one to see if i can do better. OH daylight !!!! what a differents. I still have the trouble of ging to fast. It's in my blood. My mind is always racing thinking of the best, fastest way to to something. Even things i don't do. Anyway, For the most part they came out better. I'm still lost on getting the small letters to come out right or even come out at all. Ok don't LOL to hard at the attached pics. It's the first one i did to give you some idea of the size of the lettering i'm trying to do. The 2 i did today are the same i just haven't takin pictures yet.

I don't know what it's gonna look like when it's done but it looks awsome so far. It's always hard for me to tell from anyones pictures but, how big is that ? I can't believe i just asked some guy that question. OH well i'm a freak yo !!

I have no idea. Sorry. I'm still learning as i go and i haven't been going that long. Welcome to what i believe to be the best place to ask any leathercraft Question. I'de love to see some of your work, please... OH come on...please LOL !!

Clay do you use a swilve knife to carve the small areas with ? If so do you use a smaller blade, do they make smaller blades ? Also i'm finding my brush work, when dying to be a little sloppy aswell in the tight small areas. It seems just as i'm about to touch the leather a hair or 2 will pop out of the brush. I know it all takes practice. I just want to make sure i'm practicing the right way. Thanks

I've seen some outstanding work around here. What really blows my mind is the small details. I'm did a wristband for myself and i had some very small lettering to do. Because it's for myself my sloppy lettering will pass but, i've seen others do great small letters and other small detail work. How do you do it so clean ?? Thanks.

Looks fine to me but hey i'm a freak yo. Funny though i went to Tandy's Sat, hadn't been in a few monthes. One of the things that caught my eye was that folio. When i picked it up and was feeling the tooled part it snaped and moved. I thought, oh crap i broke it. LOL Don't know about anywhere else but here they are clearancing there whole line of Al Stohlman tools. I picked up the last A.S. swivel knive for $32. Happy B-day to meeee.

Welcome, Might just be me but, that pic is very dark. All i really make out is a skull that looks like it has some kind of detail design in it. Kinda like a day of the dead theme. any pics with more light would be great, we all love pictures.
