  1. That's an interesting find!
  2. Welcome Manny! There's nothing wrong with ordering pre-cut straps. Even if you buy a kit to start off it will help you understand procedures. I started off with small kits and learned from there. I watched lots of videos and learned from some of the best on this site. One thing I can point out is learn the RIGHT WAY to do it first and if you see a better way change it. I'm sure you'll enjoy the craft!
  3. Nice coasters Stewart...I went to the pipes and cigar site. Cool site. I don't smoke but I do like the smell of the tobacco.
  4. Really cool stuff, Chris! I do like the embroidery! I really like the 2010 HD rear fender bib.
  5. Don't know, I haven't done that. I'm sure someone on here has the answer!
  6. Northmount, I was actually thinking just that. I might just glue it and cut off the excess. Thanks everyone for all the great ideas.
  7. The best leather for belts is the back. Which is about half of a hide. The part closest to the backbone is firmer and tighter grain. They need to be cut lengthwise of the hide. Purchasing backs instead of a whole side is more economical if you can get it. 9-10oz. is more for work belts. 8-9oz. works best for carving.
  8. The stud extends 1/8" passed where the leather would sit...so I'm guessing that maybe I SHOULD peen it? Because you wouldn't leave it sticking out farther than leather right?
  9. Well, I may just not use it. Since I'm going to have to make a hole in the end to accept the tip. Thanks for all the ideas though.
  10. Thanks all for the suggestions! JLSleather... It has no opening on the end. Are you sure I won't bend it over?? I'm afraid to try it.
  11. I'm going to make my 4 yr. old nephew a belt. I have the buckle, keeper and belt tip. In the package I'm missing a part for the tip. The stud is solid. I was going to use a rivet cap but I'm afraid it won't stay on. I don't know what comes in the packages since this was an older buckle from the 70's or 80's. Any suggestions??
  12. Beautiful work DoubleU...he's going to love them!
  13. Welcome from one hoosier to another! Good luck on your move to Texas. Nice drawings. The more you practice leather work the easier it gets. Save that second carving. You'll be looking back later and seeing the improvements you've made. Stop by often. This is a good place to learn and get ideas.
