Memory says about 30 LPI. Too fine and they loose crispness on the leather. Nice job.

Making a wallet - question about thickness
electrathon replied to Mujician's topic in How Do I Do That?
Buy pig lining for the inside. Pretty easy to work with and cheap. Once you get good, switch to goat for the insides. I still use both depending on my mood or who I am making it for. -
Making a wallet - question about thickness
electrathon replied to Mujician's topic in How Do I Do That?
Good for the wallet back. Pretty thick for the insides unless you like sitting on a 2x4. -
Most if the times dyes are considered concentrates. Depending on the intensity/darkness you are looking for about 50/50. Sometimes way more or way less. Always good to do a test piece on the same hide. Do a test, let it dry and see the final outcome. A lot of the times all you will get is very dark brown to almost black from straight dye, diluting gets lighter colors.

I have done it many times. Fast, good effect and easy. I have heard it argued many times by crafters that the poor quality of work shows it was done by hand. I have always felt that poor quality shower the end used it was poorly made. I have never seen anything of size that was dauber dyed that was anything better than unacceptable. To me, lines and streaks just show that you do poor work. I love distressed and color variations, but they need to be done properly. If I made something the size of the bag you are referring to and I did not want to dip it I would have used a piece of shearling, fast and moving. It would not take more than a few seconds each to dye the pieces.

Yes, with a paint gun or air brush. To dip dye dilute fiebings dye with alcohol. Pour it in a cake pan, put the leather in, slosh, remove and pat it dry with a towel.

Air movement makes it go away, like being out in the wind. Putting the parts in front of a fan works.

Dip dye it or spray it.

I believe your trouble is that the football is not leather: Model #: F7000L-QB Re-engineered leather for enhanced grip with a QB1 buckskin color It is leather scraps ground up, mixed with glue and spread out to look like leather. Think partial board compared to plywood. The surface is mainly glue and paint.

Nylon rods are typically far more flexible and "whippy" than fiberglass. Try looking at chimney cleaning rods for a non-traditional source.

White Dye
electrathon replied to Hooper26's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Go to the craft store and buy the best quality white acrylic paint (like for painting pictures) they have. -
I use Lexol all the time. Do not have a direct answer about eco-flo though. If it was the waterstain, likely not an issue. If it was one of the others, no idea, I do not use them.

Cutting Leather With Laser Questions
electrathon replied to pillpusher's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Ferg, It is good to have you, as one of the senior members of leatherworking, understand this. It is amazing how many don't. My Dad started doing leather back in high school in the 1950's. He does great work. Has not really learned anything new about leather since then. He even gave me his old patterns that he has saved (big pile, yea). A little while ago he saw some of my work and asked me to teach him how I tool. His main comment was that he had never seen some of the tools that I have. I have much respect for the talent and ability that my Dad has, much of my talent came from him (and my Grandfather too). I was honored to be a part of the circle of teaching and learning. Aaron -
Cutting Leather With Laser Questions
electrathon replied to pillpusher's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Similar to this topic over on a shoe forum I am a member of the leader of the forum bashes anyone who makes "handmade" shoes and uses a sewing machine to sew on the soles as not making handmade (bespoke is a more correct word) shoes. I watched him slam people for over a year and one day a discussion on uppers came around. Turns out he machine sews uppers, then hand sews the soles because it would be too difficult to sew the uppers by hand and get a quality shoe. The hypocrisy is the same is this discussion. As stated above, you use electric lights, a furnace, sanders and etc. As we move forward in society we have modern equipment. The only reason the old timers did not use what we have is because it was not inverted, or available, yet. -
Cutting Leather With Laser Questions
electrathon replied to pillpusher's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I believe the cut off date is whatever keeps the old timers from having to learn new technology. Every person that makes the comment that you should not use new technology is using what was new technology when they learned it (50 years or so ago). At that time in history the same argument could have been used that they were bastardizing the craft by not doing it how it was done 100 years ago, or 200 years or so on. There is a reason that the masters that do work today have superior work than the masters did in 1940. -
leatherman Pouch
electrathon replied to Peter Darby's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
If you own a fork you can easily use it as a makeshift stitch marker. Perfect spacing every time. -
Rotary cutters do work well for a fairly cheap answer. For a great knife it is hard to do better than Leather Wranglers.
-
Ray, Thank you and I hope that you also feel the blessings of God as you move forwards in life. Aaron

Look up Leather Wranglers. Call and talk to Paul or Rosa, they will help you. His knives are some of the best.

What Tools does Robert Beard Sell
electrathon replied to judgebc's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
All of his tools are polished black (blued). That is where the name "black crack" comes from, you will be addicted. He has no catalog and the website was set up by someone else and is not maintained. Tooling tools, especially figure carving, are his specialty. -
Are expensive whet stones worth it?
electrathon replied to Artificial Intelligence's topic in Sharpen it!
If you don't know how to sharpen well you will have trouble with any stone. If you are good, a good stone makes you better. Sort of like swivel knives. -
Antique Paste and Resolene
electrathon replied to PJCustomLeather's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Antique is not designed as a stain, it is to accent lines. A better approach would have been feibings dye, clear laq, fiebings antique, tan kote. Ample drying between every cote except the antique and the antique, do that right away, it will help clean up the smudgy mess. -
Leather wranglers is the best, Barry King the best for the money.
