This may be the best thread ever on leatherworker.

Sharpen your knife. Look closely at the very tip, it should be very pointed and not blunt. Let your leather dry just a little more, it was likely a little damp. Your depth of cuts looks good, rule of thumb is the deepest cuts are half the depth of the leather. Do not tip your knife left or right when turning, that is what causes the feathered areas on the corners.

Need Help With Glue Penetrating Leather
electrathon replied to miniderub's topic in How Do I Do That?
Very thin leather can easily be penetrated by the solvents in glues. Spray glue will stop this issue. GM 77 works, goes on smooth, 90 is much stronger but goes on a little stringy. -
Whoever told you that deglazer was acetone was dead wrong. SECTION 2 – COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS Ingredients (Specific) % CAS# LD50 (Oral) LC50 Ethyl Acetate 70 - 90 141-78-6 5620 mg/kg (rat) No data Ethyl Alcohol 10 - 30 64-17-5 7060 mg/kg (rat) No data Acetone is far more harsh than Ethyl Acetate is. Also pretty harsh to use on leather. I do agree it would work great though. Just that you are bringing a shotgun to a BB gun fight.

All Gromets Are Not Created Equal
electrathon replied to Doc Reaper's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
It is not just the grommets either. -
All of them that are pictured? How much do you want?

3M 90 is a lot stronger and more permanent than 77 is. You may get away with 77, but if you are relying on it to last, use 90.

I remember Bobby Rose saying that he dips most of his holsters in RTC. I think he diluted it 50% with water.

Sharpies work great. Easy to apply and very permanent. If you want to use a specific color, Crayola makes refillable markers. I think I got 5 for $8 at Michaels on sale.

for fully handmade shoes you do not need the plate. Most that buy surplus lasts remove it.

Wtb: Junker & Ruh Sd28 Or Pedersen #308 Sole Stitcher [Eu]
electrathon replied to Vinculus's topic in Old/Sold
That is one of the cleanest ones I have seen. Must have been restored or at least repainted. -
I am not a color guy (still think leather should be any color, as long as it is a shade of brown) but what I see is that your colors are way to bold/intense. They need watered or thinned a lot. Almost transparent. For the tattered effect I would use a dremel to damage the edges, your holes are far to clean cut.

Wtb: Junker & Ruh Sd28 Or Pedersen #308 Sole Stitcher [Eu]
electrathon replied to Vinculus's topic in Old/Sold
What I have seen is these sell for about half in Europe Ebay compared to US Ebay. I have never seen one that is functioning for under $500, usually way more. A lot does depend on the condition. Also needles are hard to find, make sure there is at least one with the machine. -

Collecting Tools -Antique, New -Need Em All! ;)
electrathon replied to Erystawi's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
You can't have too many tools. -
I generally use a spray bottle, tool after a little bit of waiting. I like the spray over a bowl because it is hard to spill.

The badmouthing of the Tandy grovers relates to the blades that were coming in them. The trouble was with the cutting edge, not the grover itself. Not sure if they have sold all the bad ones yet and got another batch or not. That being said, I do quite a bit of sewing and I never grove. The strongest part of the leather is the outer part, I have never understood why people feel that cutting off the strongest part will make their sewing stronger.

I have been happy with everything I have bought from them. No specific answer to the creaser though.

Axe Sheath - Copper Rivet Intro
electrathon replied to eby's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I just looked and must have tossed the example I was going to post. When I first started leather work I also thought you were supposed to put rivets in things (says so in the Al Stohlman books) so I started doing it. I soon learned not to, but about a year or so later I found the early made sheath in a drawer, it had nasty corrosion growth all over the riveted area. It looked just like acid corrosion on a cars battery terminals, only green. It does not always happen, likely a lining up of moisture and the specific tannery chemicals.
