  1. Any metal that you would consider wedding ring metal will not discolor leather. Iron is what will be trouble.
  2. What he said. This is nothing more than a stick with a piece of sandpaper glued to it. For $10 you can make a lifetime supply.
  3. To the best of my knowledge pretty much no one uses the original waxer any more. Thread has came a long way since that machine was built.
  4. Nothing but good to say about Renia. I used to use Barge, till I used Renia. Get the Cologne de something kind. Awesome glue. Masters used to be repackaged Renia, but not for a few years now.
  5. Quality of sewing. If you just want your pieces to stay together they are great. If you want precisely placed stitches an iron will do that. The length of the iron makes sure all of the stitches are exactly in line with the others. Very straight, concise, quality.
  6. It is all semantics. Dye is a synonym for stain and vice versa. The difference in the name is totally up to the manufacture. Example: Water Stain is sold as a stain, but the product is called dye by the manufacture (Finiche, not sure about the spelling).
  7. What an absolute overbuild on such a simple project. Good job, looks very nice. Pushing things beyond is how we get better at doing exceptional work.
  8. Often times it is from glue overzealously applied along the stitch lines. Butt heat re-softens the glue, it sticks to your cards
  9. just glue or tape it on along an edge. Wrap it a few times, leave the end loose. It will unwrap if you let it, just hold it as you are rubbing.
  10. Polishing and stropping are the same thing. Once you use a quality stone and your blade is razor sharp step up to your strop and polish it till it is sharper.
  11. Just buy the blade from Barry and put it in your knife. Tell him what knife you will be using it in. You can not sharpen a knife with a strop, you need a stone for that. You can keep a knife sharp on a strop. Many of the Tandy knives are not sharp when new.
  12. You should be able to find them at any fabric store. They will be sharp so you will need to blunt the tips on a whetstone.
  13. Compared to the basic Tandy knife the pro one is awesome, but it does not meet the quality of a Barry King (or other makers ) quality. They do work, just far from the best. The blades are pretty bad, really recommend buying a better one. Barry does make one that fits Tandy knives, you will be amazed at the amount of better once you change. Both sharper and the big deal is it will stay sharper longer.
  14. My suggestion is that you need to do a lot of practice on stitching. Your stitches are crooked and uneven. Your edges are also uneven and unfinished.
  15. Final chance to get into the class. Oct31-Dec1. At Oregon Leather in Portland Oregon. Wallet class, $150. There is space for two more.
  16. With great sadness I am passing the word that my friend, fellow leather worker, leather instructor in the Portland OR area passed awayFriday morning at 7:15 am. Michael had struggled with health issues throughout his life, they won the battle unexpected a week ago. Please keep his family in your prayers in this difficult time. Services will be Saturday Oct 15. Anyone interested in attending please contact me for information. Aaron
  17. Still a couple places open in this class. Happening at the end of the month. Contact me if interested. Aaron
  18. Hello. I am in Portland/Gresham.
  19. I'm not sure how often Ed reads this forum. He does have a book, no DVD.
  20. I will be very interested in responses to this thread. I always thought that this style is chrome tanned slopped with glue. Then it is laid down and slipped and pinched till the desired effect is reached. I may be way off base though.
  21. Same exact delamination of the plastic like top coat over the fabric like bottom layer. It's not leather.
  22. While I agree a post machine would be ideal, a flat bed would work. A 29K is a bad choice, you would be fighting with it all the time. Not really designed for construction.
  23. If you tool shallow and not "into" the leather the leather generally does not stretch much. Many people are going for a 3D look, carving deep and lifting the leather. You get a lot more depth and realism in your carving the deeper you work. Packing tape on the rear of the leather really helps as stated above, but the compressed leather does have to go someplace. Think of it like cookie dough. the more you roll it out, the thinner it is, but it "grows" on the cutting board.
