Is Buying A Bag Better Than Making My Own?
WScott replied to landm42006's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Good for you Adam, those are very handsome bags -
Really well done Great execution of your design Love it!

Love it , something to aspire to. Wanted to re-do my Mustang's fake plastic interior in leather, but family grew and the car didn't

I think all of us have been fooled by pleather at one time or another

Had a lady in my office with an attractive black and tan satchel bag. The girls were talking about how nice the bag was, mostly b/c of the label attached to it. I could see it was clearly not a leather bag so was babbling about how people get fooled by the name brands and that seems more important than real materials, craftsmanship and quality. I had a good close look and said it was a really nice bag...and kept my mouth shut that every inch of it was vinyl. This is ok if she knows what she is buying, but I think a lot of consumers get suckered in and fall for the marketing and branding. The counterfeit market is huge with ladies bags as well. It reminded me of this video I saw on leatherworkers. I could feel that false grain that the vinyl had from the paper backing.

yes it will!!! I got a hard time for pointing that out in another thread but it can

Two Tone Belt
WScott replied to Double U Leather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That's Purdy!!! Nicely done -
I am playing with writing paper and scotch tape to try to duplicate it. There is a triangular base with tapering sides, but I have to keep fooling with it so it folds and covers everything. Maybe upside down capital T Hmmm you got me going now! There is a picture of a tote I made in my gallery with one piece side gussets and base, but it is not as elegant as the one you show

Packing tape on flesh side or glue it to cardboard before embossing or tooling

It is a lovely bag in shape and manufacture. I watched the video and to me it looks like the bag consists of only two pieces of leather. The side gussets are simple folds and internally sewn and the base looks like triangular shapes folded from each side piece and stitched down the center. I would think a thicker insert is placed into the base from inside for shape and support It is hard to say and see exactly from the site though. I would fool around with some paper and see if you can duplicate the look with folds and make your own version. Let me know how you make out

Scraper Wallet
WScott replied to shinelightshine's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Great job doing this yourself, a fine project! When I ordered some cabinet scrapers from Lie-Nielsen, they came in a fantastic, thick leather pouch. It was one of the things that started my interest in leatherworking Ohh I missed the link in your first sentence oops My pouch is a bit darker and flatter, but that is it -

Very cool image !!! -
I think this is a perfect way to store leather How many horses so you use for each hide?? I would run out of room too fast in my smalll space Excellent point of keeping it away from under or near your bench....dust,glue, dye spills etc could easily destroy a nice hide Like to see a pic of you saw horses in action Cheers,Scott

Awesome , thanks!!

They look great..... colors, images and lettering; all just sweet. Can you give us a rundown on what you are doing, paint using, how getting such clean lettering etc Like to pick your brain a bit

Spent some time testing the edge roll over. I skived cut offs of the back and the side material, seam taped it and punched holes. Quick stitch to see how it looks. It folds out to 7 mm thick (about a 1/4 inch) It feels solid and looks ok, but will be challenging hand skiving the entire perimeter!

Oh, I think this is what you meant, sorry I can be dense sometimes this pic is from web labricoleuse.....a theatre blog

Stocking Up, Going Overboard On Horween
WScott replied to WScott's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Sure, this is their website, Philip is the owner and a very friendly Aussie. The shop is in a developing industrial area of East Vancouver http://www.indigoleather.com/ Just don't buy the skiving machine it's mine!!!!! -
Ok JLS I have been thinking about this Are you saying having a piping / round kind of thing glued on the outside or wrapped inside the back layer as it folds over. I think you have a pretty good sense of why I am hesitant to start skiving that edge and just folding it over

Stocking Up, Going Overboard On Horween
WScott replied to WScott's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
He had a Fortuna leather skiving machine for sale as well......really tempting, but I have no room to put it in the garage shop right now. In fact, we are planning either a big reno or an entire knock down and house re-build in the near future. A new leather shop is high on my priorities list! -
