  1. Ya, I like it You could get a rectangular magnet and make it a perfect base for the tray. I have inset a thick pad of leather like that to weigh down the tray a bit, but a magnet would work fine. Lots of magnet shapes for sale if you google them
  2. Wow, another amazing stool. You make some seriously cool stuff! Thanks for the journal link, think I will subscribe
  3. Hello and welcome There is a ton of info on here and some amazing leather workers of all sorts and specialties. Ask questions show your work, share and learn. Sorry to hear about your allergies..was it a specific wood?? Some exotics get my skin itching if I am not careful when working them. What sort of leather work did you do and are you going to do? Hobby or full time job leather working??
  4. Welcome, tons of info to keep you up at night on here. Start reading, asking questions and showing your progress for critique. Lots of good guys and gals on here. It is really fiddly work to get such a professional look on watch straps If I may suggest, here are some threads to start http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=50768&hl=%20watch%20%20straps&st=0 http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=18101&hl= http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=44874&hl= Good luck
  5. Interesting article Usually small niche markets survive with specialized goods or quality products. It would be devastating to see a company like Horween get affected or like you said leather from the high quality veg tanneries (W&C, Hermann Oak) Most crappy high volume low quality products come from you know where and serves the masses. Cheap crap made with slave labour. Hopefully the good domestic guys stay afloat and allow the custom makers keep up their work for the niches they serve.
  6. Good for you Andy You are a victim of your own success!! Comes with making such nice stuff
  7. I am late to this party, but good for you to experiment. Seems like some folks want a cookbook spoon fed methodology given to them because they are too busy to work it out themselves. Sometimes those things that don't work out so well for one application, work great on another project. Live and learn
  8. Hey no worries, glad to help Once you are in full addiction, you won't remember where your time or money went... and you won't care.
  9. Hello Making straps, bracelets, belts and coasters is an excellent starting point. I am gonna direct you to a few threads to read through in no particular order. Sorry if this keeps you up all night! 10. Oh I will take a stab at this 1. Leather working is a relaxing, fun hobby for me. I use it to unwind from work and life stress and it allows me to be creative while making useful products. 2. The demographic of this community is all over the map. From full time high end saddle and holster makers to recreational hobbyists. Education and income levels also vary widely (there is a "what do you do for a living" thread in the forum). I am a professional in healthcare with two University degrees. 3. I enjoy making custom and fun products for my family and friends. I love working with leather; its smell, touch and feel and how malleable a medium it can be to make a vast assortment of goods through an immeasurable number of techniques. It also serves to feed my lust for cool tools and machinery and the need to spend all my disposable income 4. There are so many things to learn and projects to tackle. Most Christmas gifts I give this year will be hand made. Although it is not an inexpensive hobby, it is easy to get into and so much to learn. This is a great website to aid that. Hope that helps, Scott
  11. Those are cool! Great feather detail
  12. That cocobolo is gorgeous. I found it smelled like chocolate when I worked with it.
  13. -7C and I am freezing my "a" off in an uninsulated garage trying to get Christmas gifts made. Space heaters don't help!

-7C...runs-off-to-find-converter. 19.4*F Yep, that's pretty cold. Maybe some plastic sheeting to section off a warm area?

Brrrrrr - Can't you find a corner in the house to use? or maybe use some Duct Tape & sheets of foam insulation in the garage... ?? I use it to cover some of the windows and I like the lite blue hue.

It is much colder than usual this weekend. I had a spray bottle of water on my cutting table that froze up solid. Not good to store my leather out here either, but no choice.

  14. That sounds like it might be something else?? Chromexel is waxy and dark brown in the back. Some other Horween leathers are lighter though. I would skive a test patch of the flesh side and try your stain out on it. I successfully edge painted some CXL with brown Feibings edge coat. Thanks Sylvia for your always kind and considerate comments. You are awesome
  15. Score!!!!!!! I would love one of those
  16. Superb video again The time and effort you take to help anonymous leatherworkers is much appreciated You might consider assembling your videos and making some DVD's for sale Thanks so much
  17. Very cool! Love the middle two

  21. It is a great start and I am sure he will love it. Nothing more special than a gift custom made just for you Great job
  22. I have the small black one with the bearing in it and a beveled blade.... love it, good company to deal with as well
  23. It happens I love when I get it on the side of my hand or thumb and then proceed to blot glue all over the project and tools and bench... I think there is a thread titled "spaz with glue" somewhere on here
