From looking at your trial pieces, I think they bother you as they seem too substantial on the top part. The thistle is sort of wispy on top. I wonder if you used a hair blade along with decorative cuts, if you could get that effect.

Roper Wallet
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks so much for the info, I'll take a look. However, unless I can find someone who sells it in Canada, the shipping might be a deciding factor. Actually, it is the same wallet, I just tooled on one side. -
Roper Wallet
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Actually, I found a double sided one at the dollar stores that is meant for scrapbooking that seems to work fairly well and it was a lot less money than the fabric store one. But like most dollar store items, it can be hit or miss re: availability. -
I bought a couple of these kits at Tandy a while back on sale so thought I would give it a go. Boy, what a pain in that the insides don't line up well. However, it was cheap. It's much heavier than I would normally use for a wallet and I did kinda give it a biker wallet twist by adding the strap to keep it closed. I have decided I hate rubber cement. I think gremlins live in it. It seems to show up everywhere. Is there any other option? I sometimes use a double sided tape but it is harder to get . I find it works really well for seams.

I think you are looking for Masquepen, it's a liquid frisket. I really like all of them, even the rustic one. lol I think I wrote to Tandy about the Professional Waterstains in regards to a sheridan style finish and if I recall rightly, they said that the pro waterstains did not play nicely with resists. Maybe someone else has tried something that works?

Die Cut Flower Necklace
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
It's about 4 oz. leather that I used. My machine is an old all metal one. I would think that any of the ones that can do thick chipboard or matboard would be able to cut the thinner leathers as they aren't as dense as those products. Also, the die has to be one of the steel rule ones, not the chemically etched ones, as they are not deep enough. -
There was a discussion a while back about using paper diecutters on leather. I have one of the original Wizard die cutters which are pretty tough and supposed to provide 3000lbs pressure so I thought I would give it a try. I used a Sizzix Tim Holtz tattered floral die and cut the leather damp. The leather cut easily. What impressed me the most was how light weight the pendant is for the size of it.

Butterfly Brooches
rosiart replied to Bifrost's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very pretty! Can I ask the size of these brooches? It's hard to tell from the pic. -
Very nice! Can I ask what colours and finishes you are using? PS. I know you have mentioned before you don't use or make patterns for sale but if you ever change your mind.......lol

http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/08/large-tote-with-rounded-opening.html If you go down to where it shows how to do the purse bottom, it's the same thing. Sewn straight , then triangles to square off the ends.

New Purse With Tooled Flap
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Well, there isn't much to see as I lined it. This fabric is probably a mistake as it is a cotton, but I liked the print and can always replace it when it wears out.- 9 replies

New Purse With Tooled Flap
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks Beaverslayer. I will have to try the others some time . For a previous hobby I acquired a lot of Copics so I'm just glad to have another use for them.- 9 replies

New Purse With Tooled Flap
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Bluesman, David, Samalan, Thanks so much . Genyfer, the hardest thing I found was that I didn't have the same blending capabilities with the leather as with the smooth cardstocks. I ended up using a lot more of the lighter colours than I would have normally.- 9 replies

I have been contemplating this for a while and finally got it done. This was a first for me to use the Copic markers for colouring the flowers and leaves. It was a learning experience as they behave a lot differently on leather than on smooth cardstock. I used the brown hilite to pull the colours together.

Well, I sure hope that some year I will come to that understanding of flow and be able to run with it. lol

Fabulous work! Thanks for sharing it. As an aside, have you ever considered selling some tooling patterns?

I have tennis elbow, and really had a hard time with stamping, for any length of time, even wearing the brace. I broke down and purchased a pair of mauls from the Bearman and I have to say, they really make a difference. I can stamp for longer periods of time before I feel that I should give things a rest. I don't go overboard but I was able to stamp out a basketweave belt for my dh in one sitting, which would have been impossible before. Your mileage may vary but they have decidely been one of my better investments.
