I added the template I drew under the challenge. Would love suggestions before I put it to leather, and some ideas you folks might have fore this type of challenge

  2. I was arguing back and forth with a friend about starting these again so we could all practice thing we might not be so comfortable with. This challenge is what I call a break through challenge. I recently did a horse that I attempted to make it look like it was breaking through the leather. But you can do anything you want, although I'm going to do another horse. It can be someone breaking up through the surface of a body of water, an arrow shot through an apple, the possibilities are endless. I hope this will help us practice perspective and give a sense of motion to our projects. For people who've never done any of the challenges here, we don't have a winner. Everyone wins that plays. We usually post our WIP for help from the other members and this is a cooperative endeavor so that hopefully when the month is over you have a piece you're proud of. You can do the image on a project if you want or just a fair sized scrap, entirely up to you. I hope you'll all try to find the time to participate because this is open to any level, from a person picking up a swivel knife for the first time, to our generous long time folks here always willing to help. Any questions feel free to ask here for everyone's benefit. And next month I'll be handing the baton off to someone who's going to get us working on a steampunk project. Cheryl
  3. I'm sorry Kate I just saw this, and I'm still laughing. Although I hope you weren't scalded. I amaze myself some times at the unplanned idiotic things I still do, but usually they're worth a laugh. Cheryl
  4. I've done two collars for big dogs, and both are holding up well. I like you name inset. Is that stamped and painted or concho type letters? Very nice job either way. Cheryl
  5. Very nice, haven't heard snow leopards mentioned in forever. Unique and very well done. Cheryl
  6. Hi Scotty....never thought I'd see this thread resurrected but it made me smile going back through it. It's ok you are among friend's here. I have since acquired 2 more 15-91s since I made my last entry to this. I love my singers and FINALLY I sewed some corduroy on mine two days ago as a repair for a friend and that seemed to sooth my anxiety There are lots of tips in here about remaining in a harmonious relationship while still being addicted LOL. Cheryl
  7. I found out goat doesn't roll unless you want a billfold that's over 1/4" thick I found out no matter how fast I talked I could not trick my 15-91 into thinking I was sewing UNDER a 1/4" I found out if your not careful when you roll the leather you can end up turning the beautiful CC holders you made yourself into 1" across and they'll barely hold a pencil I found out I can make something so poorly even I'm embarrassed to post it and that takes a lot. So no pictures today folks, just a arduous learning experience since I worked on this all day. BTW I would love to hear other stories of something you messed up so bad there was no making it look intended. Cheryl
  8. Thanks Andy, I'll have to try the java, I love the look of this. Cheryl
  9. Gorgeous Bruce, really. Good work coming up with it. Cheryl
  10. Hi Red. A picture would really help. I use resolene all the time 50-50 and don't have this problem so maybe the carving is still too wet or it could be something about how you're applying the neetsfoot which I don't use but plan to on some leashes I'm making for some pups in case they chew. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheryl I'm also the master of run on sentences
  11. This is just so awesome. I remember back when you did your fighting horse biting at each other and how I couldn't quit looking at them. Cheryl
  12. I just got through working with the little boy next door on some leather and it got me thinking about kids. We mangled a bracelet, and some hair-on-hide and he had a great time, and I enjoyed it too. We went outside and made a matting tool out of a stick, and he stayed and worked on leather while his mom ran to get his sister. I like knowing that for a while most days he's respected and listened to and enjoyed. And it got me thinking of all the scouts a friend of mine works with and how many lives she's impacting. And just an overall wish that all the children tonight were listened to and respected and enjoyed for a while.
  13. I love this, and really love the leather toggle. Might have to replace my 'stick' toggles with a couple wet formed ones. Thanks for sharing. Cheryl
  14. Saw it when it was just the skull on FB. It turned out gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, Cheryl
  15. I'm glad you had the pleasure of having horses in your life Ferg. She is one of my greatest pleasures just to be around. Like said before just to walk out and lean into her neck and get a lungful of that smell makes me happy. This wasn't meant to be controversial in anyway and I'm glad people are giving their opinions. Cheryl
  16. Ken I don't think there's any argument to this. I think the long term answer to the over population is not breeding but in the short term probably slaughter is best. I didn't mean to start a thread about slaughter, or breeding, or any of the things I wish I could change but can't. I just really care a lot about my mare and was kinda showing her off I guess. But I honestly don't use horse in my work, it may be silly but I just don't. I didn't mean to imply that no one should or that would solve any equine problems. I have seen horses that I know it would be kinder to put a bullet between their eyes than let them live. One used to be pastured with my mare but is recently separated because she has huge boils on her. I took her a carrot just like she was still in with my mare the same day these pics were shot. I don't believe in letting any animal suffer and have had to put so many dogs down in my lifetime I still tear up when I think of them. I have derived a lot of pleasure from horses in my lifetime and don't use the hides, to me it's no different than dog leather. Maybe it's silly to feel this way but I do. I didn't realize people would think this thread was controversial since I agree with everything said here. Cheryl
  17. Sienna get so fat just on hay as you can see that I thought once she was accidentally bred
  18. Cool design. Can't wait to see the finished product. Cheryl
  19. I guess my view is slightly different. I don't think we need more slaughters but less horses. I've had this mare for 5 years now and I would love to have a foal by her. Yet she's an unregistered Morab so the only thing I could breed to in order to register the foal would be an Arabian. And you can probably guess from my pictures I'm too old to be able to guarantee a foal a home for life....so I don't do it. I plain don't add to the problem. I realize my views are more of , 'in a perfect world' where yours are pragmatic. I am not saying people shouldn't use horse butt, just that I personally don't. I don't use elephant either. Just weird that way. Thanks for your opinion. Cheryl
  20. How pretty and so unique. Really love all the different patterns and dyes.....they still seem to blend. Cheryl
