  11. Table top drill press may be more versatile than an arbor press, the throat is deeper and the vertical distance between the chuck and plate is greater. A drill press may not produce the same pressing power as an arbor press but it should be more than satisfactory. Also with the drill you will be able to chuck up a burnishing tool for your edge slicking. The drill can easily be fitted with a fence(store bought or shop built) so one can set it and easily puch a series of holes the exact same distance from the edge. I have used my small drill to do this and it will punch 2 layers of 8/9 veg tan easily, no power needed, it would probably "drill" those belt holes even easier but I haven't tried it under power. I also have an arbor press, 1 ton Famco, very nice but none of my punches fit under the ram. Just my .02
  12. That awl handle is impressive, I like the fluting , nice bit of work. What's the inlay in the butt?
  13. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=51J3KA8l22U I just run my thread out the hole in the bobbin and hold it for a bit.
  14. From the spool on the thread stand straight upto the guide on the thread stand, eye needs to be directly over the center of the spool. Next go through the eye on the winder, then back around the tension disc making sure to pull it in between the discs fully then forward to the bobbin. Should be a lever next to the contact wheel that you press so the wheel makes contact with the belt, hold the thread snug and hit the gas. At least thats how my table mounted winders work. Good luck and enjoy your machine Apparently I type slow. Dirtclod beat me
  15. Pretty awesome! Thank you for taking time to put it together and share with the class. Jeremy
  16. Wonder if this would work for waxing edges on soft leather as well. Might have to get one, thanks for the link! Jeremy
  17. I have a H.F. Osborne splitter. Cast into the plate is: Spittler's Patent Champion Lap and Splitting Machine H. F. Osborne. It was pretty rusty when I got it but it cleaned up pretty well. Blade is sharp and has some life left. I do believe the roller is not original. Pretty cool old splitter with the raised letters cast into it. Its old and has some wear, I added a spacer for the spring on the handle, not fancy but it does the trick. I've ended up with to many splitters so this one will go. I can ship USPS priority mail flat rate for $20, local pickup is also available. In Wisconsin east of Madison in Waterloo. $400 plus shipping? Offers?
  18. I've spent the money on Osborne ones, still had to rework them, seems thats the way it is now. Check Bruce Johnson leather, he deals in used tools and they will be ready to use when you get them. Conduit makes a good punch if you have the tools to do it.
  19. BigJake I was just curious if the one you got looked as good as the picture that Weaver shows. Too many times I've purchased tools from a catalog or website based on the pictures and when said tool arrives its not nearly as good as the pictures, Osborne bag punches are a good example, pictures show a nice polished barrel and sharp cutting edge, what I got looked like it was shaped with a brick. anyway glad you're happy with yours.
  20. Any way we could see some good close ups of it?
