  1. riiiiight - and which color prom dress do I get for this project? grin
  2. I think so Well she is the "mother of the forum" after all I really did have fun working on it ---- although 2 am on Sat night was a "tad too late to be working on fabric" I was going to use leftover pieces of the second dress for a frontpiece on the top...... untill I cut it in half --- several BAD words later (the cats even fled) I went to the basement (the repostory of all things cool - ask Johanna) and found the black and gold trim..... somewhere around here they were talking about quality goods - I can tell you after tearing apart those two dresses that I would rather pay the money for something from the second place. The quality of contruction was excellent and the fabric much nicer. I can be somewhat of a fabric snob and this satin was YUMMY. Butter soft and HEAVY. Quality goods.
  3. have you looked at Fire Mountian Gems they are the "Magpies" holy grail when it comes to jewlery and findings and you might want to check out Braiders Hand they have stuff mainly for Kumihimo --- but an end cap is an end cap
  4. this one is a bit better how'd I do guys and gals?
  5. Ok here is my other lastest project - Johanna"s daughter Jane had to do a power point report about someone "famous" We have been a bad influence on the kid -- she picked Queen Elizabeth the first. and she had to dress up like her "someone famous" IN THREE DAYS ! ! ! ! Ever up for a challange Cousin Suze managed it....... two bridesmaid dresses later - Dress one http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/sto...entryId=2000897 dress two http://www.houseofbrides.com/product.php?p...at=0&page=1 the results ---- well that didn't work will try again nice carpet pic though
  6. her name is Cyber and she was being in a "lovey" mood right then and was all soft and purry
  7. I think I did it - I hope I did it My first project - made with bits and pieces from Johanna's workshop and sewn together with several different ends of threads......the buttons are from my Grandmother's buttonbox and are leather as well. and at one point it was safety pinned together -- hence the name.... I didn't make the belt - I bought it. From a man who sells them "by the inch" ($10 an inch .... wide ways - It is soooo much fun watching people who "don't know" look at a belt and see a "million dollars" fly out the door >evil grin< ) Oh and the last one is the reason that there is cat hair sewn into the seams in various spots. >grin< try not to judge too harshly please - I know it is a bit lopsided and funny looking - but I finished it and it doesn't look TOO bad. (the next one will be better - right?)
  8. I was thinking about this some more -- If you want to see what the stress points are maybe you could take an old fabric skirt that is the same size and chop it up the sides and punch some holes in it (use some elmers glue on the material to stiffen it up) and lace it up and then do some things in it --- like sit down and see what happens the body changes shape when you do things like move and sit. I can just see you doing all kinds of work on this and the first time you wear it -- you shread out all the holes..... and are YOU going to be showing through the laceing or are you going to line the skirt with something -- that could make a difference too. the lining could be taking stress instead of the lacing.
  9. now this is from a sewing standpoint not a leather one so take it for what you paid for it -- zippo I would think that ANY eyelets on the side seams are going to take some stress - unless you never plan on sitting down, or moving... I have NEVER had good luck with setting eyelets on any seam that takes even a little bit of stress (I do ren clothing for myself) Have you thought about opening up the seams and putting some sort of decrotive gusset in them? different color of leather with an applique out from the sides would look like it was done with intent and not just a slash to make the skirt bigger. (don't you hate it when the closet shrinks your clothes >grin<)
  10. you're welcome and they are really nice to deal with - the last time I ordered something I had it the next day......WOW If you do get this kind of "silk" and like it - get the shade card - it's worth the bucks
  11. http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/ex/...idThread/556652 http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/man...nger/45k25.html either of these it?
  12. go to http://www.braidershand.com/threadsform1.html (it is a site for kumihimo and other fibercrafts) they sell SILK threads and one they call "Imposter" that is a good match for silk (also half the price) And this is the craft that they used to hold Samuri armor together with so it can be very strong. I have3 bought both the silk and the imposter and it is very hard to tell the difference. WORD OF WARNING - KUMIHIMO CAN BE ADDICTING >grin< Hve fun a little info----- from the site This bundle of silk has four ropes of 672 threads that are pre-cut at 105” (2.7 m) long for braiding on the marudai, takadai or kumihimo disk or plate. The silk is packaged in Japan in this manner so that braiders can easily make the traditional belts, the obijime, that go around the obi. A round obijime made with this number of threads is approximately 1/4" to 3/8" (5-8mm) in diameter. (Braids: 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru and Beyond by Rodrick Owen) For other projects it is easy to divide up the silk in any way the braider wishes. The fourth rope, at the bottom of the photo, has been further broken down into four sections. BraidersHand thread comes in packages that contain one rope of thread that has four sections. One package of silk has 42 fine threads in each of the four sections for a total of 168 threads. The thread size is150/3 which is about the same size as 00 silk thread available on small spools in the USA. INFO ON PRICING The Biron and Imposter has 39 threads in each section for a total of 156 threads. The metallics have 31 threads in each section for a total of 124 threads. Silk Fine Silk comes in 44 colors - $10.50 per package. Please use this Shade Card to select your colors as there is not longer a shade card being made. Note that on our Order Form the Fine Silk is indicated with an "S", the Biron a "B" (see Synthetic below, for information on Biron.). Premium Silk in 80 colors - $11.75 per package. Premium Shade Card - $16.00. Note that on our Premium Silk Order Form each number is preceded by a "PS". Synthetic Imposter is our new synthetic thread, it comes in 67 colors - $5.50 per package. Imposter Shade Card - $16.00. On the Imposter Order Form each number is preceded by an "I". Biron (bee-ron) thread is a viscose thread made as a synthetic silk. It comes in the same 44 colors as the Fine Silk - $4.50 per package Biron has been discontinued but we still have a supply, especially pastels, no shade card available. Please use the Fine Silk Order Form.
  13. just want to keep this at the top come on let's see your artwork
  14. It's not hard to find the right foum for your craft - just do what Johanna did run out and make it yourself a proud cousin Suze
  15. cool mask It loolks "Marti Gras" to me (with the colors and all) How about something that goes with that theme?
  16. how about using leather..... hang on this might get a bit long. Brain is working oddly lately make a rack of some sort that will hold a piece of leather in sort of a frame work. Kinda llike they show hides streached to tan? You could even use old picture frames. spraypaint them all one color though. put the leather on it and put holes in it tho mount the buckles. Maybe even tool it to sort of look like they are on a belt? then when you have them all neatly mounted on these put them round your booth on picture frame stands or hang them off the side walls or lace them together into a "wall" toss a color in here and there to POP it and you are good to go..... If that make any sense whatsoever. I made a lot of my display racks out of cardboard and duct tape so what do I know of wood working. Have you tried looking at www.firemountaingems.com you might get an idea for something there (yes iit's a jewlrey site. look at the display stuff and think "arond the corner")
  17. I don't know much about leatherworking myself - but how about making a sort of "mitt" to wear OVER the glove Look on the chain maile sites for something called a hand flower (yes it is a "Harem girl" thing) but I think that you could make a square of maile with finger rings and a bracelet and wear over the gloves and nobody would know the diff for a costume. Especially if you used black rings for the finger ring and bracelet part (If you are wearing black gloves that is) Just make it loose enough that you can bend your hand
  18. I like - would wear any of them in a heart beat If my hair was long again (it's growing out- not fast enough though)
  19. I was just wondering if any of you are planning on entering this contest? Would ease our minds that someone out there thinks that this is a GOOD idea...... Suze
  20. Tom Banwell with the steampunk mask made a raygun out of odds and ends (there was a winner for WHICH odds and ends he used) Like a sink facuet - chess rook - air nozzle look up the Pacadermous mask in show off
  21. well they could always be parts for a "ray gun" wonder if anyone won it yet == must check
  22. ok - will give on that one and I think the curtain pulls might be right -- although I could use them for braid weights as well. I'm a crafter, NOTHING is safe, and there is a second use for everything
  23. Ok here goes - an "outsiders" view Abby is looking for a case. Benny and Claude have offered to make one now here comes George and says that you HAVE to get one from Darin His is sooo close to Zeke's (the master leatherworker) that you will never know the difference. And Will Not Let It Drop. Darin has never heard of Abby or her wants- but maybe George tells him about it. Darin KNOWS that his stuff is not as good a Zeke's, which is why he never offered in the first place. First George is CLUELESS and Benny and Claude and Darin know this. I think that it is Darin's place to tell George to SHUT UP ALREADY and let it die. I also think that if you jump in with "help" in educating people about the differeces in the workmanship you will only make Darin's work look bad by comparison and that might hurt his future sales. I might send a quiet e-mail to Darin about what George is doing - If he already doesn't know about it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.......
