  1. How do I make a wallet w/ turned edges like the ones made of upholstery thin type material? How does the machinery that makes these wallets work? Can it be done by hand?
  2. Well made and looks professional. Some things that can take it one step further are different coloured thread on the inside for the top and middle , a logo, change the card slots to a pebbled black leather or different compartments.
  3. I'm curious if anyone know if dies can have 90 degree corners? The ones I received are rounded in the corners, which are better looking than 90 degrees but I'm curious if its standard.
  4. Id like to hear everyones way of cutting a pattern out of leather. I have no issues drawing the pattern on the leather, but when it comes down to cutting the leather out I tend to cut a mm past the line on some edges and corners aren't 90 degrees on some areas. what type of tool do you use to cut rounded corners? Do you freehand or use or coin?
  5. Looks similar to japanese quality below dixon, overpriced though. Cheap metal and looks to be made by CNC. Barnsley, an old leather tool brand sells some pricking irons on addoway.com. There is only one person at the company that can still make a pricking iron and they could probably make a new iron similar to vergez quality for less, like a custom order made to your specs.
  6. Angelus paints works on veg tan as well. You may want to thin the paint and go over multiple coats w/ drying in-between.
  7. The holes are rounder than the standard pricking iron? I don't want to create a second post so I will add on to this one - Can anyone source this iron? The prongs are longer than dixon and vergez and the two edge prongs are the same thickness as the middle prongs. Looks to be made in korea or a lesser known european maker.
  8. http://www.abbeyengland.com/Store/tabid/77/ProductID/69101/language/en-GB/Default.aspx?poselid=p69101%3ao711%3aOne+Size Does anyone own this iron? Are the impressions the same as the dixon irons? I know some people will recommend the japanese pricking iron. I have a japanese pricking iron and I prefer the dixon to the japanese.
  9. painters taks sponges and blot on paint. You have to look out for the paint clumping up this way.
  10. You could dye the leather with spices, boiled dark coffee and natural dyes. Someone with more knowledge may be able to tell you how to get the colours to penetrate deep and last.
  11. The brown leather is that goat or calf?
  12. Did they say anything about changing the way they ship the products to prevent damaged leather in shipment or if they re trained their staff to prevent sending wrong weights of leather?
  13. since the leather is being stitched horizontally from one side to the other side, the pressure will be applied to the awl cut, which will tear if pulled too hard. A small hole won't have that issue.
  14. Any updates? Was the error corrected? Id like to know because I'm pretty sure I know the tannery.
  15. What type of leather is stiffer than horween but not as stiff as bridle - that is vegtan, latigo, or another type of pull up.
  16. Two pieces of leather glued together. Between the two pieces of leather are three stiff leather/ cardboard and 2 long bands. As you can see there are spaces between the bands and stiff leather inserts, that allow the case to bend (I'm guessing its a iPad smart cover). The bands won't bulge on the inside since they are flat on one side.
  17. you can buy other colours. You may be able to paint it the same way you paint car parts. Strip the paint, spray primer, 2 - 3 coats of paint sprayed on and seal. Not worth the trouble unless you already own a airbrush, primer, paint and finish.
  18. they resolved the tiger thread issue and sent me a new spool. They respond very quickly. The dixon iron I assumed was standard quality, but now it came to my attention that it may be on the lower end of what they send out in terms of quality control. In one shipment I had 2 issues w/ my items so I don't know if it happens often to other buyers or was coincidence. Im thinking it may have been a coincidence and I will give them another chance.
  19. abbey england has some in stock. In one shipment I received two items that have defects or issues with from abbeyengland. First it was a dixon iron that is deformed slightly, still usable however. The other was tiger thread that looked like it had 2/5th of the thread missing. There prices are extremely low Barbours thread for 20 dollars, half of what campbell randall sell for. They may be buying in huge stocks or some of these items had defects from the factory/ returned items and sold at cheap prices. The two items w/ defects may have been a coincidence, I have to think twice before buying from them.
  20. The one I received has the taper as well. the stem is rectangular and bulges slightly when it gets to the taper. The V taper from the side view also isn't even, so when I hit the iron it won't distribute evenly.
  21. Vergez overcharge since hermes and louis vuitton use it and they are the top in quality in a niche market. But they are reasonable since the tools last decade. Vergez takes it an extra step after they grind it down on a grinder and finishes it with a metal file, which was I believe how dixon use to do it in the past, not any more though. The vergez whole tool has a v taper and works to distribute the force better and the metal is also bevelled. In my opinion buy once and you don't have to deal with selling your old pricking iron to buy a vergez. You may like the dixon tool however as its personal preference.
  22. abbeyengland was where I got my dixon, it is the newer modern dixon. The prongs are double the size vergez so you have to file it down. Dixons are less than half the price for double the prongs compared to vergez. The older dixons are better quality, and vergez is comparable to them, id recommend you get the better tool and keep it for years.
