  1. I've never covered a case like that. I do know you need to use thin leather around the .3mm or lower goatskin or calfskin chrome tan from a bookbinding supply store.
  2. skive it thin or buy it pre skived. .3mm or lower.
  3. Do you have a picture of the hole and awl? I've sharpen a messed up vergez awl blade. Completely out of whack to usable. My tip to you is to use a sandpaper as option number 1, cheap silicone carbide stone option number 2. The stone will have grooves after you are done. Try to sharpen evenly, finally use polishing rouge after green compound. I could go on some more in-depth but to just sharpen it evenly will get the awl to where you want it.
  4. drum dyeing requires a rotating drum. I believe drum dyeing and tanning are done in the same process? Someone else may know.. The benefits of drum dyeing are that the hide has a consistent tanned colour all the way through and when done right will not bleed colour. If you want to go from start to finish, raw hide to leather, it would be easiest to buy leather in wet blue or delimed. A specialist will be able to set up a drum dyeing system for you for a fee.
  5. A newer machine on this page too. Black handle. http://www.mando.fr/17-fileteuse-manuelle?p=3
  6. is the g6/m better than the m3000 or m6000? What makes it different?
  7. leatheroo on ebay is a good source for me. Do get the veg tan, not chrome if you want something with substance similar to cow veg tan.
  8. Looks good. I am assuming you are using a clicker die? The edges have that look that its been cut by a clicker die. Autodidact, I never heard of this word till now. I would fall in that category with you.. The very last picture you want the two leathers pieces to fit flush against each other. Its better to not stitch in the middle of the pieces, rather make the stitch longer. Even length stitch on both sides. When it is one piece that is above the other like the middle stitch for the card slot its better to stitch the way you did. You can also measure out the length and spacing of the stitching holes so that, there will be no misplaced stitching. This is something I'm still playing around with..
  9. mud, your pictures made me realize how much leather effects the stitching. With thin leathers the stitching doesnt have that type of look in your wallet picture. 632 seems to be the most versatile size, not super thin like the 832, and slightly thinner than 532.
  10. This is what huns from this forum uses http://www.prescottandmackay.co.uk/products/general-tools-and-supplies/fabric-and-pattern-paper/leather-board. Peter nitz had replied to someone on Facebook or instagram saying he uses foam. You could go with suede (cheap) and/or specifically made stiffeners depending on the stiffness and flexibility you want.
  11. thanks lilways. 632 looks better than 532 from what I see in your picture and what I have done with the 532.
  12. haha clyde "don't spend it all in one place"
  13. You probably wont see a noticeable difference. I have samples from wickett craig, some are regular, some pasted, refinished ect. Im not able to tell which is pasted or refinished. I will take a look at the samples later on to confirm if I can tell a difference in weight.
  14. 532 on 9 almost looks like it is too large. 632 I would agree would look better on 9. 632 on 7 is on the thinner side and I can't tell if it will be too thin.. If it is I guess I will just stitch with 9 SPI w/ 632 if it doesnt look good with the 7. Thanks for the help.
  15. Does anyone have any pictures of 632 lin cable thread stitching on 7SPI and 9 SPI. I know that 632 is used more often at 9 SPI, how does it look at 7SPI?
  16. http://www.leathercrafttools.com/shouhin.jsp?id=4772 never tried this product but it looks promising. Rubbing with saddle soap and water may help, try on a sample before you go forward with the rest.
  17. Does any one have a pic of a a round crease mark? how well does it work on chrome tan?
  18. http://www.leathercrafttools.com/shouhin.jsp?id=10153 http://www.leathercrafttools.com/shouhin.jsp?id=10152 Whats the difference between the two?
  19. when moving my house labelling saved us a few headaches. I would check what the price would be a year from now, since the space is so large.
  20. huns, what is the product name of the grey leather? How much should i pay per sq?
  21. I use a scrap of leather and practice everything I would do on an actual item. Its very similar to almost anything you practice, when it comes down to the thing you trying to achieve, its shows you your errors and where you need to improve.
  22. give em away? or trade them for a case of beer...
  23. bell skivers are that hard to get right? I would imagine hand skiving would be harder, just the sharpening itself is one year learning curve. I only hand skive right now but always thought bell skiving machines were on the easier side.
  24. how do you like the baby calf from d'annonay? Any chance you tested out the box calf from them? Are you aware of an online store in North America that has a selection of fine leathers, charles hardtke was one I had my eye on but the site is no longer active. fineleatherworking has a selection of fine leathers, but they seemed overprice although I need to request a price list from the tannery to see for sure.
