  7. Well I've gained enough interest to poke around (about the same interest as the stock market) but haven't found the information i'm looking for. In order for me to consider Bitcoin as a possible form of payment I will need to be sure of a few things first. 1. Taxes. How would I go about reporting the income? What happens should I decide not to convert them to USD and simply pay with them? You mentioned California considers them currency and taxable but I don't want the IRS breathing down my neck for ANY reason. Bitcoin related or not. 2. Pricing. Do I price an item with Bitcoin or with USD? Bitcoin can jump or fall rather quickly. I'd rather not get into the issue of charging 1 coin for a project and during the time of construction the value takes a nose dive. The same would go for a project where the value goes up and the customer expects more even after payment (assuming payment comes up front) 3. Receiving of funds. Should I receive payment in this form it needs to be transferable to my bank account on the same or next business day. That's how it works with credit/debit cards and I see no reason why I should expect any different. 4. Security. Since the creation of Bitcoins their value has jumped from $0.05 USD to almost $980 USD then has fallen quite a bit. According to Google the current value is 229.28. This makes a big difference if I decided to accept the payment today but the value tanks tomorrow before I can get my money. Over the past 3 months the value of bitcoins has steadily dropped. Source: http://www.coindesk.com/price/. 5. Usage. Know of any providers that accept Bitcoin for leather supplies? If i'm receiving it for my work I might as well be able to buy the materials with it too. I like to keep my money separate that way i'm not jumping into the household income for leather and vice versa. I'm not feeling that my already hard-to-come-by hard-earned money would be wisely invested in bitcoin. For the record I feel the same about my 401K and company stock purchase plan. But I refuse to pull that money out and pay the huge tax penalty until I absolutely have to.
  8. If hindsight were foresight with a tiny investment of $100 USD (0.05 per coin) when bitcoin first started there was potential to have well into the millions ($1.9 Million +- ) IF sold at the right time. The ground floor for bitcoin, in my opinion, was between 2010 and 2012. After that the boom hit and the price skyrocketed. Now the market has been tarnished by several widely publicized seizures of sites dealing in various items and services that are illegal in nature. As a person who works in the tech sector in my day job and seeing the fluctuations of crackdowns by several governments getting ever more frequent I ---personally--- feel that bitcoin is not right for me. I"m not saying that it shouldn't be used, just I don't feel secure putting my money into such a virtual market. I agree with Matt T - the only viable way for me to get into ANY crypto currency is to be able to immediately convert it to USD and deposit it into my bank account. The suggestions to use instagram/twitter/facebook/any social media, is an excellent idea and is sure to gain exposure and sales, even without the use of bitcoin. I encourage someone to try and convince me otherwise, however, it took me a long time to pick up Etsy's card reader so I could accept cards on the go.
  9. Ended up going with the foam pieces that link together like puzzle pieces. they were less than 1/4 of the cost of plywood and i backed the seams with Gorilla Tape.
  10. Open to offers and trades. Looking for a larger mallet/maul. patterns are always helpful. would also consider other hardware and leather.
  11. I have the opportunity to purchase an American Straight Needle at what I believe to be an excellent price. I have not yet seen it other than in a picture (low quality cell phone picture). I plan to go look at it and potentially pick it up in the next month or so. The machine is not listed for sale but offered to me by a friend of my wife's family who is a saddle maker. This is his backup machine that he hasn't used in quite a while. I have been given the impression that the machine is in working order and know it will have the user/repair manuals coming with it. When I look at it I would like to be able to make an informed decision. What kind of wear should I look for? Including general wear and excessive wear and associated repair cost. Are there any ways to tell if the machine has been run hard or abused. (I expect it hasn't) Where would I locate the model and serial number? If I end up buying the machine where can I purchase parts/accessories/best thread(I've read to not use poly or nylon)? I understand it's and old machine and parts have limited availability. What would be the expected price if the machine is in immediate working order? Working order with a few simple repairs? Simple work required before working order is achieved? I wouldn't as so many questions but I don't want to be stuck with a massive cast iron lawn ornament if its not usable.
  12. When in doubt, ask the creator of the pattern! Otherwise, echo what everyone else has said.
  13. Are you selling an item made from a pattern or the pattern itself?
  14. Whats that? TWO near full gallons of Barge's Cement for $0.50 each???? Yes Please!

  15. Should work fine! wet forming will give you the best fit. I have some 2/3 oz laying around and a zippo too, I'll try it myself between projects.
  16. If I were making it - I would make the leather just a (very) tiny bit smaller inside diameter than the lighter's outside diameter. This would make a compression fit that wouldn't require glue. Leather would probably be 2/3oz thickness. Measure! Measure! Measure! And do several dry fits before assembly to make sure everything is lining up. Wet forming will depend of if your using veg tan or not. What are you planning to wrap it with?
  17. Picked up two boxes of these from an auction of a textile factory. I'm going to keep some and sell the rest. Some have a little corrosion on them so i'll toss the aside. I'll only ship good ones!!!!! They box has been sitting open a while so they are just a little dusty. Dimensions: 1" inside diameter 1 3/8" outside diameter 3/16" diameter metal 175 will fit into the smallest flat rate box and will be $40 and free shipping. Smaller amounts will be 0.30 / ring + shipping
  18. Maybe i'm missing something but what about the copper rings? I'll probably pick up this tool if someone can point me in the right direction of either applying them without rings or making them too!
  19. The one piece I got was, I would rather pick it out if I could. its about 50% usable. Haven't used it yet so I can't speak for finished color/dyeing/burnishing.
  20. I would be interested in setting spots too. I have the press and it works well for rivets and snaps.
  21. Out of curiosity, which dye did you use on the pieces in the picture? Was it the pro waterstain?
  22. Had the exact same thoughts there! Mentioned this to the wife and she thought I was crazy. I'll show her your post and say i'm not the only one who thinks that things can go bad. Even with large sheets of plywood covering it all. Pulling the carpet is not an option as it is all one piece that makes it into the living room and its a rental. If it was my place i'd do it though.
  23. Cardboard had crossed my mind but i fear it would break down too fast. Plywood would be an excellent choice and is less than $6 for a 4x8 sheet from home depot. For some reason I never thought of it. Plastic or foam mats is what I was thinking about like this. Right now plywood i think is leading the charge. It will cost less to cover the floor and I can cut to size exactly what I want. The foam may flex too much on top of carpet which would allow them to "unlock" (the faceplant comes to mind here). Thanks for the suggestions! I'll upload a pic of what I do when I get it done!
  24. I'll be moving out of a tiny 2 bedroom trailer in early Feb to a 3 bedroom rental house. I'm taking over one of the bedrooms as a work space. Currently I have one of those cheapo rugs from walmart as a cover in case i spill dye or finish. It will not be big enough as the work area will almost double. Anyone have any suggestions for covering up the carpet in the new place so I have less of a chance of mucking it up with dye? A couple more rugs would probably do but they slide around on top of carpet and get wrinkles that can be dangerous in a shop setting (i've already almost faceplanted twice).
