  1. I've got a soldering iron that looks exactly like the Lee Valley wood burning pen with all the different tips. I bought it at Lowes for about $20. It gets too hot. Looks like Andrew may have the temp closer to correct 160 - 180...
  2. I've come across & read about the Yankee wax too. I'm pretty happy with my edges right now with the Fenice edge paint, sanding and a coat of paraffin wax and burnishing. I still need to try melting it on some scraps. When the time comes to step up it will be the fileteuse and Beraud edge paint. I think it has the wax in it.
  3. Hey great looking bag. I see you've already answered questions about the stitching but I was going to say basically the same things... thread looks small for the holes and hand stitching would look great too. Good job!
  4. The pamphlet that came with mine says: "Contenitori Per Colle" Which just means Glue Containers... and... "Saldati a ultrasuoni" Ultrasonic sealing.
  5. Thanks! I bought it from Maverick Leather. They have a link at the top of the page sometimes.
  6. I just got one from Ohio Travel Bag. The only writing on the thing is "Made in Italy" and "Minor 0.4-3012 Container"
  7. Anyone tried any of the Renia Aquilim line? http://www.customboots.net/customboots.net/SNF_glues.html
  8. 7.5 x 4 inches Horween Orion leather, saddle stitched with Lin Cable @ 9 spi. Lined with French split goatskin, Tandy Pro edge paint.
  9. Oh... Tandy has their Pro Edge paint on sale in Sept. Made by Fenice in Italy. I've been using it on Horween Orion and Essex. A few coats, some light sanding with a fine grit and a little wax on some canvas to burnish and the edges will look real nice.
  10. Start here: http://brazilianleather.com.br Look under companies. Pretty tough if you don't know any Brazilian Portuguese. Search here under Brazil http://www.leatherworkinggroup.com/tanneries.htm I found some pretty interesting sites googling Couro de Pirarucu. http://www.40forever.com.br/laura-lima-e-suas-bolsas/ My wife is Brazilian... I'll see if anyone down there can help.
  11. Really nice work. I've done some double loop but not the Mexican round braid; it's awesome.
  12. Looks good. I just made a couple pairs of rolled handles too. I'd give 'em some edge paint and next time trim them so the distance from edge to stitching is about half. Did you glue the handles first or just stitch? I saddle stitched mine and would like a larger cord inside to fill them out more.
  13. Yes, Joe is right. In the video they are just burnishing the leather. As Joe said Valerie Michael mentions it in her book. If you don't own the book, you should.
  14. Edges would look great with Fenice edge paint (Tandy Pro Edge Paint) which is on sale at Tandy. Couple coats, sand, another coat or two and some 600 or higher grit sandpaper and a coat of paraffin wax.
  15. Looks nice. It's tough stitching down inside something... is that what it was?
  16. Did you glue the pieces together? My stitching was ok until I got my Vergez Blanchard... best tool I have. Nice work.
  17. 4.5 oz Horween Orion leather. Stitched inside out and then turned right side out. I used Irish linen thread from Royalwood Ltd. and a Vergez Blanchard pricking iron @ 9 spi. Too bad the stitching is on the inside. I like to see it usually. Tandy Pro Edge paint on the handles and top edge of the tote. If you haven't tried it it's actually made by Fenice from Italy, the stuff rocks! Inside the handles is just some cotton piping cord from Joann's. I'd like to find some stiffer wool felt cord. I'm pretty happy with it and ready make the next one better. Approximately 12 x 8 inches.
  18. Thanks Monica! Yeah, I'll post it on it's own thread too.
  19. Happy to be finished. Looking forward to learning how to make the next one better. Stitching on the handles was challenging. Maybe I should have stitched them on first but I think that would have made it difficult to turn right side out.
  20. I got a PDF file and printed it out. It's got a lot of stuff on it but I'll just include what I was looking at purchasing. Fileteuse M3000, 1 output 0 to 16 V, mono 110 V 60 Hz, without handle - €180 Flieteuse/1002 cork handle - €70 Iron with guide F - €74 Single iron S 0,5 standard - €70 Iron to apply wax - €76 Convert to dollars and add in shipping + customs and it's over $600, closer to $700. My quote was good for one month and I was quoted these prices 4/24/2014
  21. Mine so far. Ready for the handles to be stitched on. Horween Orion leather, 9 spi. I used the Light Brown Tandy Pro Edge Paint (Fenice from Italy). Inside the handles I used some cord from Joann's. Only thing I don't like are the seams inside. They are a little obnoxious. I guess some skiving could help.
  22. There's an entire thread devoted to the tool. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=38750 So far the only edge paints I've read about that come close to Hermes is: Fenice, Stahl and Beraud.
