I did the same thing. Then did it all again to the correct size.Love your veg tan calf interior. Nice work. Looks like you added some pockets too. -
2015 Keep Making Stuff Monthly Challenge

I knocked out most of mine last Saturday. All that's left is to finish the edges. I'll be putting on several coats of Fenice edge paint. I used Spanish calfskin, Sokoto goatskin and Lin Cable French linen thread. -

I think I scrapped that idea. It was getting too complicated with all the extra ideas. -

Still 12 days left! -
Yes, thank you! I emailed them about it. They probably won't respond. I found some on eBay but it's 4 ply and I use 3. I may try some anyway. If anyone wants some we can do a group order and get the wholesale price and break up the shipping.

2015 Keep Making Stuff Monthly Challenge
thefanninator replied to thefanninator's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I received my goatskin for my interior yesterday and jumped right in cutting out all the pocket pieces. Come to find out my printer was printing at "fit to page" and not "actual size." Everything was about 20% smaller. I wasted an hour or two but hopefully the pieces can be used for something else. Today I reprinted the patterns at actual size, glued to posterboard and cut them out. Recut all my pieces, stitched all the pockets, cut out the large interior piece and the exterior piece. About ready to stitch everything up but I'll clean up some edges first. -

Monica, I see your last pocket (card slot type 2) overlaps the bill section... Mine is doing the same ...on the pattern it looks like they don't overlap and it is stitched in...which creates an extra stitch... when the last one should just be stitched in with the wallet interior to the wallet exterior. Anyone else run into this problem? Thoughts? Edit: Ok so I guess based on the pattern the card slot type 1 are overlaping each other. I'm lining them up to make the edges just 2 layers... -
Might be Patent leather. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_leather

Halfway through the month. Anyone care to share some progress photos? -
Bumping this thread up. I was just looking at reordering one or two spools from Royalwood... does anyone else think $11.25 for shipping 1 or 2 spools is really high?

Cool!

The goatskin I bought from Talas was 6.4 sq ft @ $13.10 psf. - just under $100 after shipping. Honestly I probably bought it too soon and ended up wasting some and I gave away a couple of the pieces I used it for to my niece. I ordered some Sokoto Goatskin from Siegals. I'll see how it compares to the goat from Talas. Those are the only two places in the US that I know of that have very nice, very thin stuff for lining. I want to get to a higher level of quality and value with my work, so yes, I would charge more. I've also used the black stiff (calf?) stuff that Tandy sells. I would only suggest it for learning. You might look at the Shrut & Asch kidskin that Springfield sells. I had some and it's nice stuff - not expensive but it isn't thin enough so a splitter may be necessary.

Much better. I guess it takes a while to get the casing right, quality stamps and the right amount of muscle.

I've used suede pig from Springfield and French split goat from Talas. Goat is awesome but not cheap. Talas has calf too but it's even more.

Thanks for all the congratulations. Baby and momma are doing fine. I've been able to get in a little leatherwork (see my knife sheath post). I've got some of the pattern pieces cut out. I ordered some leather for this project but haven't received it yet. Anyone have a good start on it yet? -
Knife Sheath
thefanninator replied to thefanninator's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
The stitching is red Tandy braided polyester cord. The border stamp is Barry King 5 seed #2. -
It's been a while since I've done any stamping and a lot longer since I've done a knife sheath. Hermann Oak 8/9 oz. Barry King Basketweave Fiebing stain and antique

Do you know how to hand stitch? What have you done so far? What tools do you already have? The order of production should be small & simple to large and complex. Make a few small wallets first. If you've already done a few projects post a few pics so we can see where you stand.

Well, I kinda cheated and punched all the way through. Did you come out the side like Stohlman's book explains?
-
Great work.

Thanks, I ended up finding it in the gallery. Very nice. I tried this stitch on a quiver over a year ago using Al Stohlman's book but gave up and just did a double loop lace.
