Starting Again After 20 Plus Years Away
leatherwytch replied to Instinctive's topic in Member Gallery
Welcome to the best site on the internet and back to leather. Unfortunately many of us that started as kids, when we became adults put it away because of jobs and families. We always come back to it though. In some countries artists are encouraged to make it their own viable business. However, in North America it is not considered viable. Now you have time and things to do when the big storms hit. -

Hi Nelz, Welcome to this great site. I hope you tell your brother that he better hope he needs a pair of shoes he doesn't come looking to you for a free pair. This is unless he offers up his feet without having to beg him.

You have leathers I would love to have but you don't ship to Canada.

The point is I was sick and tired of driving to meet her, which was not a short distance it was out of town and wasting 4 hours each time. Picking this and that and changing her mind constantly. 33 e-mails and 18 phone calls and constant mind changing. Take into the account that I charge $30 an hour. Everyone thinks for all of the above things you donate your time. I knew this person would not be happy no matter what happened. I was done at that point. The hide I would have used was a three hundred dollar hide.

This is correct. I had a customer want a very fetish style harness that stars were donning. The set sold designer wise for $3800.00 They wanted me to make the buckles look old. I told them I would not do it identical to that but better. Well my price was $1k. She practically died. I said to her that was inexpensive considering none of the original harness was lined. If she was wearing it over bare flesh at least it wouldn't chafe. She decided she didn't want it and then two years latter wanted it done. I told her the price was now $3k as the price of leather had gone up and it had. No, she didn't get it.

Should ask her if she would pay that for a Versace, Gucci, or Louis Vutton. Then say, this is ten times better because it is handmade. Not in a factory with children getting paid 5 cents a day.

I always take 100% up front on a custom build and i state on my website, no refunds or remakes unless I did it wrong.

As I have been doing this over 40 years. I am entitled to the rates I charge. Which is equal to what I made at my last job, only I enjoy this more. Now for that belt I would probably charge between $250 and $350. I live in Canada and everything is more here. If they want custom they need to pay custom. If you don't respect your work enough to charge the appropriate price then no one will think it is worth it. Keep up the great work. It is a great belt.

What I do when I start a job is when I start to do it I record the time. When I take a break, I record the time, When I start again and so on. Then when I am done I add it all up and you will have how long it took you. Say cutting out was an hour, putting it together and dying it another hour. You have two hours.

Welcome to the best leatherwork site on the net. Love some of the designs on your leather. It looks good, although the colour is so bright on everything it is hard to tell. I figure it was your camera. Anyways, come hang out in the chat room with us sometimes. Lots of us go there joke around and talk leather, answer questions.

I charge $25-30 per hour, then price of goods plus 40% markup. It is okay to make money off of family and friends. Remember this was custom and custom is 3-4 times higher than buying off the rack.

I did not we had an adult section. Could you kindly put me in it also. Thanks.
