I also just bought the CB3500 from Bob ( 3 weeks ago), and he's been very helpful.......but what you're dealing with, you shouldn't even have to call him....there's a manual right? In it it shows you how to lengthen/shorten the stitch. Just turn the knob shown in this picture. The relationship between the thickness of the leather you are stitching and the length of the stitch, is something out of "stitching 101", or to be more exact, Al Stohlman's " The Art of Hand Sewing Leather". From that I learned that projects up to 1/4" thick look best stitched at 6 stitches per inch.......3/8" thickness, 5 SPI.......more than that, including your 1/2 or 3/4" thickness, 4 SPI......it's been a good rule of thumb for me when hand-stitching, and it's no different on the 3500. I've made the adjustment several times already and it's really simple.....turn the knob, do a test on scraps that are the same thickness as you'll be stitching, adjust til you like the length of the stitch. I'm by far no expert, but we're getting along (3500 and I ) very well, if you get stuck and Bob can't be reached, give me a hollar.

I'm planning on doing my first gun/knife show in late April. I don't expect to sell anything, in fact, nothing will be for sale. I just want to display examples of my work, hand out a brochure, and see what happens down the road. I've worked trade shows for some companies I've worked for, and have always enjoyed this meet and greet approach. Tables are only $45, it's an hour away....I'm looking at it as a not so pricey investment. One thing for sure, you have to be able and willing to deal with the public with a good attitude.

Kayak, I feel the same way about my CB 3500...no size envy here......I'm thrilled with it and we're getting along famously.

Here ya go: T-nuts, size 6-32 x 1/4" Here it is poking through the front layer of holster: Insert Screw (6-32 x 3/8") through male of snap, and through btm layer of strap: Screw into t-nut, finish off strap: Hope this is clear..... -

Sandwich a "t nut" between the two layers of leather, then screw the male part of the snap into the t-nut along with the bottom layer of strap. Follow? If not, I can send some pictures ......tomorrow.....shops closed for the night:-) -
A fella was over just yesterday to show me his Kydex reinforced belt. He somehow folded it and now has an ever-lasting fold crease in the Kydex and can't get it out...he's got a nice fold line in his belt.

Played With Some New Techniques
Rayban replied to Eaglestroker's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Your basket weave pattern seems to be off.....or maybe it's just me, I've had a couple refreshments today.......but there doesn't seem to be uniformity to it....again, it could be me. Also at the top and bottom of the pouch, I like to see a clean border whereas you stamped the scallops right to the edge...... You meant for the stitching pattern to be different on opposite sides, correct? I favor the one on the left ( no, I'm not a Lib.) Do the slots on the right give you a noticeable change in cant? Doesn't seem like they would. I like the idea of stamping on the pouch area, don't see much of that and I believe you can get away with it on a pancake. Keep working at it.... -
I echo that.....and I also agree that you can keep the detailed molding to a minimum and still have a world-class looking product. Your work is proof of that.

I haven't but I've wetted down a strap and shaped a curve into it, let it dry and turned out pretty good. (I never made a belt out of it however, I ended up using the piece on another project.) I'm also of the opinion that a straight strap will take on the contour of the new body soon enough.
-
Not quite there yet but I'm feeling better each time I use it. "It" is a Cowboy 3500 btw.....what a pleasure to use. I got it set at 6 spi and I'm liking the looks of it so far.......much more practice to do.

I used to use the artificial sinew all the time until I tried the waxed thread that Tandy sells. I started using that exclusively, except for when I wanted the rustic look, then used the sinew again.

Dink, I'm looking for someone to punch out some rosettes from scraps I would furnish, is this something you can do??
