Here's another one I built on some stainless steel sheet metal from my fab shop. After fabricating the seat pan I polished the bottom, and took it to my leather shop. The alpha/omega symbol is my logo, and a proclaimation of my belief in the Lord Jesus who is the beginning, and the end.

Awesome work! I look forward to seeing the finished piece. Did you carve the barb wire, or is that stamped? Either way it looks great. I have a hard time with barb wire.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I really appreciate it. Tom, the customer provided the design, and said he wanted black. At first I didn't know how I was gonna pull it off with one color. I did have to put a little thought into it. I can only work with one shade of black, so texture was the only option available to define the artwork, and make it pop a bit.

I built this seat on a pan I made out of 12 gauge stainless steel, tig welded hardware, and polished to shine. The top, and bottom leather is 5-6oz. Royal Meadow cowhide laced together with 1/4" kangaroo in a mexican basketweave pattern. I sewed a pocket on the bottom for registration papers. It's going on a 67' Ironhead Sportster. The customer provided the design, and requested all black. It's the first time I've done scallops in one solid color.

Life is short, and you never know when you can be taken down. I remember not long ago, Levi was still tooling, and then the accident took him out of the game. Seems like yesterday. Just 3 weeks ago I suffered a heart attack. I was lucky. Got all fixed up, and back at it after just a couple of days. I know now that I have to take care of myself better than I have been, and do more living instead of mostly just killing myself. I could have died, but I was given a second chance. Not everyone gets a second chance at life. Make the best of what you have.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Tandy Leather Factory sells at least 2 books that cover the "Mexican basket weave" or "round braid". One is titled "Lacing & Stitching for Leathecraft", and the other is called "How to Lace". I think both of them were under $10.00.

Thanx, Spider. The lacing really isn't hard at all. It's the Mexican round braid. Once you do it a couple of times it's a piece of cake. No, I didn't make it myself. It's 1/4" kangaroo lace from David Morgan. I'm lookin for another source tho, a little less expensive.

I have no problem at all with black on motorcycle stuff. They're for riding. Not for show off at the local hooters parking lot. I know that natural would show off the tooling more, but I'm not that vain, and most bikers could not give a rats ass about it. It's going on an old Ironhead. I've had one for the last 20 years. They're chain driven, and no matter how much you keep up on the maintenence, and engine overhaul they will spread a little oil around. Black just seems to be the color that suits old iron best. Unless of course everywhere you go with it the thing is on a trailer. Just my thoughts on the natural thing.

I just finished this for an Ironworker in PA. He wanted crossed spud wrenches, a skull, and all black. I made the seat pan, foamed it, and of course the did leather work. I was an Ironworker, as was my father, and my uncle, so this was an exciting project for me.

Here's a link to an e-bay auction. I use these pans to build display seats on. I usually will wait for another auction if someone has already bid on them. Three for less than $45 includes shipping.
