if you place an order for leather with waterhouse, they will send you the samples at no additional charge...
-
i've read otherwise on here...

how'd you burnish the chromexcel? looks good. people have repeatedly told me it can't be burnished without that overpriced soldering iron, but it doesn't look like you used that so i'm curious if you could tell us how you did it, please...
-
uhhhhh...no they're not. i just placed an order with them with the code and received no such discount. when i asked about it in the thread that was on here that said there was a discount, i was dismissed and rebuked for asking about it in such an old thread and then the thread was locked. so no...they do not offer a discount for people on here.

i do have quite a few friends. the best part is THEY DON'T TALK TO ME LIKE I'M A MORON! and i don't talk to them that way either. if anything, i try to err on the side of thinking they have MORE knowledge than i do. less insulting that way, but whatever. i'm friends with the people i want to be friends with and not with those i don't.
-
since we're all playing the "let's-quote-each-other-all-the-time" game now... i have let it go. i'm done dealing with him anymore. also, don't mistake my intolerance for being talked to like i'm a moron as having a "chip on my shoulder". i don't let anyone talk to me like that in real life and i am dang sure not going to let them talk to me like that on here. there's really nothing complicated about that.
-
nevermind. it doesn't matter and i don't care. to others in this thread that have replied without the air of condescension, thanks for taking time to try to answer a couple of my questions POLITELY. thank you.

Pffffftttt...

SOME PEOPLE. Wow.

i have a gingher rotary cutter and it doesn't cut leather worth a crap. i was surprised because i have a couple of other gingher tools and those work great. but that rotary cutter is a piece of junk. i checked it and it's definitely sharp. but put it on 6-7oz leather and you might as well be trying to cut it with a plastic knife from mcdonalds or something. it sucks. are there other brands that don't suck? i finally resorted to getting a utility knife and gee, it works great. sure wish i hadn't wasted money on that stupid gingher cutter.

i would recommend stitching in the forward direction then since they seem to come out right that way.
-
do the flesh-to-flesh test before you change anything. it could just be crappy leather...
-
i wouldn't recommend using it for the inner bill compartment. the linings i have used are very thin and flimsy and wouldn't be appropriate for the inner bill separating layer.
-
except that i don't think the wallet he showed is lined at all. so adding a lining would add more thickness (however slight). there is a piece of leather to make the compartment for bills...that one needs to be made of thinner leather as do the card slot pockets...and the change pocket. keep the same exterior thickness. then on all the other parts, use thinner leather and it will not be as bulky and still allow you to tool the outside.
-
use the same leather for the exterior panel and thinner leather for the interior parts. also, wet/fold your exterior panel without all the inner parts in first...should help it to close better once it's finished... might want to try out using thinner thread and a higher spi also...just an idea...

yeah i will try changing the blade soon. i repositioned it last night and it seemed to work a bit better. anyone else have any other answers to my long list of questions please?
-
yeah good luck with that.
-
i'd take it off your hands too...heck, i could trade you some chestnut veg tan for it if that'd help...

have you seen Nigel Armitage's video on the saddle stitch in detail? he shows left and right handed saddle stitch...in a lot of detail. and also the option of putting the needle up through the loop on one side in order to put an overhand knot in the stitch to force it to lay at the angle. i've watched it quite a few times and i seem to pick up something new every time. anyway, it might help. I'm trying to visualize what you're describing...it could be the stitches don't lay right the first way due to the angle your holes are vs. the direction you're stitching. hard for me to explain...maybe someone else can explain it better than i can. also, try putting two pieces of leather flesh side to flesh side and then stitch a while each direction. i found i was using sort of crappy leather and it made my stitches on the flesh side appear to be straight. once i did that flesh side-to-flesh side test, it was slanted correctly on both sides without me changing how i was stitching. not sure if that helped or made it more confusing...
-
there's a video for that
-
i thought about that but it sounds like the "correct" tool for that is pretty expensive. i looked at part of the video in the link you sent me. i need to get a skiver that actually works. he's using the same one i have in the video, except his cuts and mine doesn't. going to try repositioning the blade as someone suggested in the other thread where i asked about skivers.
-
well then you assume wrong. if i meant to say caseD leather, i would have said caseD leather. i meant "case leather" as in leather used to make cases. i have seen makers refer to "case leather" in several videos, so i didn't know if there is a specific type primarily used for cases or what. apparently you don't either. thanks for the reply anyway.

neat...i might need to get one then..
