Waterhouse Leather offers LW members a DISCOUNT
LTC replied to Johanna's topic in Announcements and Administrivia
i am not sure this code is valid anymore. i just placed an order with them and the discount was not reflected in my total. just fyi in case anyone else tries to use it... -
tejas industries no longer makes rawhide. that was a very old thread with old info. wouldn't count on the other two making it either.
-
unfortunately, that thread is from 2010. pretty sure most if not all of those sources are no longer available.
-
tandy has a book that covers all of that, but i don't own it. maybe someone else has it and can look it up in there for you. or you could buy it and download it from their site. i've borrowed a friend's before and it covered quite a few different types of edge braiding.

Bracers And Bracelets
LTC replied to Ulfberht Leather Works's topic in Collars, Cuffs, Leashes and Leads
care to share the seller's name on there? i need to find some nice leather pieces soon... -
well that sucks. looks like there is a market there if anyone were to have the motivation to fill it..... might try looking around on watchuseek.com and see if anyone has any sources there. i'd read threads on there about buckles previously without much info given, but that was some time ago. i saw these deployant clasps that look really nice... http://www.mywatchmaker.net/deployantclasp.htm but the website is rather silent on where they're made.

1. because almost everything i've seen made in asia is crap. 2. because i choose to support the UNITED STATES economy instead of that of some other country that may or may not hate us and hope for our ultimate demise.
-
wouldn't surprise me if it's one of those "secrets" no one wants to divulge. i've asked in other places before and no one would cough up their sources.....i know they're available on ebay, but those are all (all the ones i've seen) cheap asian crappy buckles so i won't buy them because i don't want to put a cheap, imported, crap buckle on any watchband i make.
-
not "cheap" if you have to buy their "special" little dies and/or proprietary press tools though... ohio travel bag -- you might want to do a search on here for a recent thread on them before you get sticker shock on their shipping charges anyway... i use fasnap..... http://fasteners.fasnap.com/viewitems/premium-snap-fasteners/caps? they have brass snaps as well as in black oxide and all sorts of colors. you have to order 100 at a time, but i go through them pretty quickly and it's nice not fearing i'll run out very soon...
-
i would personally not buy non-standard snaps so that i don't have to buy proprietary dies or anything like that.
-
ok, well i checked my sources and no one has them in 3/4"...good luck...

except for the fact that he replied in another thread recently to say he does not make these anymore and doesn't sound like he has anything directly to do with them now, so......it's not him that is lagging...

tandy stuff is garbage. sent you a pm about alternatives.
-
yeah. i know.

yeah, magnesium would make a spectacular and highly dangerous fire. i know not to do that. i'll see what i can come up with. working on finalizing the design now. in fact, i could use some help from someone that is better at graphic arts than i am. i cannot draw very well.

that's fine...I'd be heating it then immediately stamping. if using brass, i think the whole thing would get pretty hot making it difficult to hold. maybe i need asbestos gloves. lol most of the time, i plan on using it with a mallet anyway...i just want the option to heat it up to use on finished leathers, non veg-tanned, etc...

Because I want to use a torch. 1. I don't feel like buying a heat gun. 2. I don't feel like waiting for the stamp to get hot enough with a heat gun. 3. Nobody said anything about using magnesium. I know I can't use magnesium...that is why I was asking what materials would be appropriate to use with a torch.

i need to look into getting a maker's stamp also. can anyone recommend a good stamp maker whose stamps can be heated up with a torch for heat stamping that will also work for regular stamping (with a mallet...not a press...) i'm not interested in that soldering iron solution...i want to be able to just heat it up with a torch.

oh good...i'm glad it makes sense and hope it helps you be able to set your snaps well...and safely. it takes a little to get the hang of it, but once you do, they will all look really nice and set correctly...

i want to get the 4-tooth and a 2-tooth at the same time...in particular from fineleatherworking.com because if i have to order the 2-tooth one later (whenever they finally get them again), it won't qualify for free shipping. and the 2-tooth is backordered for weeks or months...who knows... they're actually a little cheaper from VB (except for the outrageous shipping)...about $118 for a 6-tooth and $40 for the 2-tooth...also you're not forced to choose from one single SPI size (9) and either 10, 4, or 2 teeth as you are from fineleatherworking.com...you can get any SPI and any number of teeth you want direct from VB. if it weren't for the exorbitant shipping charges, i'd place an order with them. oh well. and i emailed that ebay guy twice now and he's just ignoring me. makes me not want to exactly hurry up to give him any money. thanks for the offer, but i'm looking to get a 7spi...or 8spi if i can't find the two i want in 7spi... thanks again...
-
still wondering where i might be able to pick up a 2-tooth and 4-tooth iron sometime in the foreseeable future. (i.e. not "backordered") i tried contacting the ebay guy and he just ignores my messages, so i guess he's out. i also checked on buying from Vergez Blanchard directly and they appear to want 59 euros to ship two small pricking irons to the US. PASS.
