  1. I use a file cleaner brush sometimes. But as Johanna said sandpaper works just as well, and I have a tendency of using that more than the brush.
  2. Clay, Kangaroo's biggest use is predominantly the whip and lace industry. The greased hides have been pre-treated with a dressing, or tallow to preserve the leather, and when you plait your whip you put additional tallow between the plaited layers. This keeps the leather hydrated. And since you don't tool the thongs, it doesn't matter that they are greased. Also using a greased thong, prevents your lace from wearing out when doing laced edges. And the only main difference is the tallow added to the hide. Most of the time the hides are either bark tanned or veg tanned.
  3. Welcome Jesse from your neighbor to the south.
  4. That helm is really sweet.
  5. Double what Gemlin said. Beeze, if you just want to play, I have recently acquired 16 of veg tan roo hides. They are older hides and some have some issues, but they are perfect for making lace. The only difference between that and the stuff from David Morgan is it is not greased. I can send you one out if you are interested for a fraction of the cost from Morgan. Let me know by PM and we can work out the details.
  6. That is exactly how it is done. Very thin leather is used for the cover. More than likely it is goat used on a book. Unless it is antique, then I have no idea. Thin leather, a modeling spoon, and glue is all.
  7. You can also use binders board. But the cheapest way is like Bruce said is take an old binder, or get a new one and take it apart. Keep an eye out at the dollar stores. Especially this time of year with the back to school inventories.
  8. Welcome aboard Larry. Enjoy your stay, learn allot and of course post pics of your work. We are kind of junkies for seeing other peoples stuff.
  9. Thanks Dave, I'll have to try your method.
  10. Great design. Unfortunately I can offer no real pointers.
  11. Welcome aboard fellow Illinois resident.
  12. Love it Dave. Can I ask how you get that 2 tone shading. I have been trying to get that look on projects, but it never works. What's the secret?
  13. Russ, I bought one of Neel's splitters, and absolutely love it. It keeps the adjustments right where I need them. The people who run the outfit are top notch. Great people to deal with, this is one case where I can say don't let the price fool you. It is well worth it. Mine came with a strap cutter which in itself is a great little tool. And yes it can to a 6" piece.
  14. Welcome. Grab a cup of coffee relax and please share your work.
  15. Very nice work as always Clay. I really like the inverted carving you did on the rose on the small notebook.
  16. Excellent! Welcome to the board.

    Tandy Books

Exactly Bruce. The drawings are well worth the price, and I consider it an investment anyway. How is the floral book? I was considering picking that one up too.
