Your top layer will need to be around .3mm in order to get the look of that original. Goat molds the best. You can get veg tanned goat from Siegals and skive it down or get pre-colored book binders goat which is already the thickness you need but you are stuck with solid colors. I would use a 2 oz cow for the backing and 2 layers of the 2 oz for the plugs so you can sculpt them. As for the glue, Art hit it on the head - use the white tanners bond glue. Just my $0.02

I am glad you like it. I have absolutely no problems posting the pictures. They actually look better than the ones I took of it. I totally understand the situation. No worries. I'll keep it for a display unit and if you ever decide to move on it cool. If not no big deal either. And like you said, if I sell it, I can always make a new one it will be better the second time around.

I like that pattern. I am going to have to give this one a whirl, when I get time (ROTFLMAO).

Thanks for the plug! I am humbled. Thanks for the report, I wish I could have been there.

Welcome aboard. Nice site. I really like the pirate map seat. How long did that one take you?

working on a portfolio cover
The Major replied to sheowahya's topic in Books, Journals and Photo Albums
Ok. First off OUCH. Secondly, nice work (on the rest of the binder). This is how I see it. and maybe some others can offer some more suggestions. You could plug and patch it with leather dust and rubber cement and sand it down, but I would be concerned with the patch not lasting as that is a really flexible joint. What you could do is an applique braid on the folded corners (Where the white lines are in the picture.) A simple 3 strand would work. This would make a nice transition from the cover to the spine which has a weave design on it. Just put a patch on the other side before you do it. OR Decorative cut out a small section and inlay something. Cut it apart as a last resort. -
working on a portfolio cover

Marylin, Before you cut it into pieces, there may be a couple options. But I need to know what color it is before I recommend what I am going to recommend. It may be workable. Also, can you post a couple pics of the area where it is. -

Clay, Try these guys. http://www.airrider.com/store/category.php...heck=true&cat=8 -
I usually just cover them with a 3-2 or 5-4 turks head.

I thought I was the only one. Its funny. I finally got around to making a cell phone case for myself, had it for about a week, and someone made me an offer above my normal selling price for it, so I sold it. LOL

Thanks for the thoughts. I am really just thinking of recovering it and using it as a sample when I do shows. Pictures don't do things justice sometimes.

Don't know. I had it saved on my computer from an email that someone sent me from another list. Sorry I can not be of help,

Try this. This was circulated on another list. round_braid.pdf round_braid.pdf

Very nice work. The one you posted that is finished, is that the pan that is laced or did you cover it with a metalic leather? Can't quite tell. Nice look either way. Did have a question, does anyone know of a good resource for identifying OEM seats and matching bikes to them. I had a friend pick up a couple seats he saw at a garage sale for me to recover. The original owner knew nothing about them. I have identified one of them as a seat off a Ducatti SS750 for sure, because I have recovered a few of them in the past. Now this one has got me stumped. I think I have narrowed it down to either a Boss, or a sportster, but it seems to large for a sportster. Any thoughts?

Can someone please lock this thread before it gets any worse. :deadhorse: Lets all just take a deep breath, kick back and share a brew. Just end it. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong.

$0.10 per furlong. You don't want to cut into that profit margin too much. Seriously though, I would say $1-$2 a collar

Would you enter a contest via mail?
The Major replied to wolvenstien's topic in Feedback and Suggestions
I'd say pictures. I don't necessarily trust the post office or ups while handling entries. But then again, I don't necessarily trust my picture taking abilities either. But If we do send them in, would the items be then sent to each judge? I am all for posting pictures and voting via a poll. I am not sure if I agree with having an anything goes competition, it is hard for people to judge a belt that is competing against a motorcycle seat on an equal plane. Why doesnt the contest commttee pick a subject and the members vote. Just my $0.02. -

best liner for a gun case?
The Major replied to Oscar B's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
When I made a display case for "The Twins", I lined it with pigskin split dyed red and coated with neat lac. (7 years ago and no problems thus far) but that does include an oiling of the piece every 6 months. Definitely don't store them in a holster, that's bad juju. -
My guild, Praire States Leather Guild also accepts members from all around. If interested you can go to www.pslg.org for info.

--> QUOTE(Oscar B @ Mar 6 2007, 05:43 PM) I have used white glue in drops for rain drops. Now that's a good idea. Whoda thunk it. I'll have to try it. -
This is why Wickett and Craig is nice. You can get some VERY nice leather from them and you have no minimum to buy. I have never tried Seigels until recently, and I am very happy with their products as well as their service. I picked up some of their double shoulders, as well as some of the veg tan goat. I will now be frequenting them quite often.
