How To Avoid Stretching/widening When Tooling?
The Major replied to jsb's topic in How Do I Do That?
Yes. Use the better thicker packing tape. Just be sure to let everything dry before you pull the tape or take it off the plexi -
As mentioned it is probably PVA. Very common in book binding. It is the only cement I use. It does not take long to dry. The trick with PVA is light coats. If you put it on heavy it takes forever to dry. I am partial to Jade 403 available at Talas. Plus This particular cement has the same odor as elmers glue. Nothing really offensive like Barge. The other benefit to PVA, is you can dye it after it is cured. And texture it while it is curing so it is ideal for restoration work and patching.

How To Avoid Stretching/widening When Tooling?

Many people glue it to plexi, personally never cared for doing that. Too much clean up in my opinion. Personally, I like packing tape. -

Very nice. -
Interested in purchasing a top and bottom feed bell knife skiver. Preferably used. Only interested in the head, don't need the table. Even if you have one non functioning that I can rebuild. Please let me know what you got. Thanks

I use leather dressing before, during and after plaiting. Some people use white saddle soap during the plaiting process, but I found dressing works just fine. since I dont have the time to make my own dressing, I use Pecards.

Dog Teeth Ripping Apart My Leather.
The Major replied to The Major's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks Bob, The duct tape worked though. I wonder though, I was playing around with it last night, and I was taking some measurements, With the dog set at its lowest, the teeth still sit about 1/8" at it's "grab point. To me this seems excessive. My thought is to take off some of the material of the dog, where it sits by the adjustment screw. This will let it sit lower in the slot and therefore it wont protrude so much. Thanks for letting me talk my way through this. I'll figure it out. Take care. -
Dog Teeth Ripping Apart My Leather.
The Major replied to The Major's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Its a leighton mach 1. Luke, I'll give it a whirl. Thanks. Kevin, I did not know that. I'll check it out. Thanks guys. -
Ok, so I have had this sewing machine for quite a number of years now. And I have just grinned and bared it since I got fed up trying to adjust it. This is what is happening. I am sewing along. Finish up my project, cut it loose from the machine, turn it over and find the feed dogs teeth are digging into my leather. (The more severe the thicker the leather is.) I have tried adjusting the amount of pressure on the foot thinking that may be the problem. But alas, it is not. I have thought about filing a flat on the teeth to see if that would work, but before I get too drastic, I thought I would ask. I have been able to remove the marks with a slicker. But I shouldn't have to do that. Machinery is supposed to save time. Thoughts anyone? Thank you in advance!

I just ran across this place today. I have not done business with them but their prices aren't too bad on some things.

Sketch out 2 circles with the same center. The center circle is the size of the ring. The outer ring is the width of the ring times 2 plus the diameter of the inner ring. So id the persons finger measures 1/2", the center circle will be 1/2". And if they want a 1/2" wide ring, the outer ring would need to be 1 1/2" in diameter. Cut out the circles. And fold the ring inward. The ring needs to be wet formed to hold the shape. Hope this helps.

Up for your consideration is a hand tooled leather 3 ring binder with a hand colored rose bouquet on the front and nice basket weave designs on the corners. The basket weave design continues on the side and the back. Design is colored with spirit dye, not paint. The inside is covered with a nice soft goatskin suede left in its natural color. The edges are braided in a two tone color with kangaroo lace. This binder took a total of 120 hours to complete. Rings are 1 1/2" Please contact me if there are any questions. Thanks and have a great day! Cost is $150 with free shipping.

I never wet form any of my flasks. I will tool them and finish them before I assemble. I will glue the leather piece to the flask and then stitch closed using a simple baseball stitch. Then a couple dabs of glue to hold the back down. I use another flask with a clamp to keep the back pressed down till the glue dries. For the glue, I use a product called Black Max from loctite. It is a rubberized superglue. Hope this helps.

Ok, so I know its not leather (sorry but it is braiding related). I havent made too many nylon whips in my day, mainly roo, and I usually use a leather fall. but when it comes to nylon whips, what do you do for a fall if the customer doesn't want a leather fall. Do you just use the nylon cord and fill it with a piece of flat leather? I'm at a loss. Thanks for the assistance.

I not sure what fee you all are talking about, but I don't ship through paypal at all. I only use click and ship. I pay for my labels with a paypal debit card, and I get money back, I don't get charged any fees.

The other thing you could do is use a flat strip of leather folded around the key chain, and do a series of turks heads down it placing a band in between each. but I like your idea about a 6 plait.
