It is also important to keep in mind what type of wood you are using for your handle. The steel rod serves as a type of shock absorber. If you use an old broom handle you will need to insert a rod into it, but if you use a denser wood you will not. I would recommend finding a wood working store around your area and get some hardwood dowels for your handle cores this way no rod will be needed.
  3. Steve, Welcome to the board from a fellow Scouter and Chicagoean and PSLG member. Maybe I'll see you at a meeting sometime.
  4. I favor a double action. Pasche VLS. You can shoot lots of different mediums through it. I would say buy what you can afford. But dont buy cheap. You will be able to get a really nice one for $150.

Just to chime in here on dying strings. I dip dye my strings. I will use an old jar mix up my dye to the color I want and there you go. I will then let it dry and apply dressing to the strings.

I like the tutorial. It was put together very nicely. Might I ask you a dumb question. Is there a reason for making such a long handle for your bull whips? What is the advantage to a 18" handle on a 6 foot whip? Can you get enough speed out of the whip doing it that way?
  9. That hide looks like roo to me. But it looks glazed. Keep in mind you will be able find 2 types of hide finishes out there, glazed or unglazed.
  10. The nice thing too is you get it cheaper online too. Plus if you have a business paypal account, you can sign up for 10% back on your purchases. Link you PP business debit card to click and ship and you can save even more money.

  17. Why don't you use a stirrup blank? Tandy has them in 2 1/2" and 3" x 66". That was more than enough length to make an order I had a couple years ago for a guy with a 56" waist.
  18. I have a Mayhew 66000 Hollow Punch Set available. If anyone is interested in this set (pictured below), I have one available. It has interchangeable cutters for hole sizes: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16, 3/8", 7/16, 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1 1/6", 1 1/8", 1 3/16. These cutters are nice and sharp. I have used my personal set for 6 years and have yet to have to sharpen one bit. I have been seeing these sets sell for $160-$200. I personally bought this set for $100 and would like to get that back. These are high quality punches and are in brand new condition. The case is a little scratched, but the cutters are immaculate. Please let me know if you are interested.
