Minimalist Wallet
Hi Im Joe replied to Hi Im Joe's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I used a pricking iron from CS Osborne (609-9 I believe). Thanks! -
Chromexcel is a dual tannage. It's chrome tanned and then veg re-tanned I believe? http://horween.com/101/chromexcel-2/ Nice article about the process to make CXL

Ouch that sucks.

Awesome post! Thanks for the insight.

Edge Kote definitely penetrates the edge. The Fenice seems to sit on top. I would not slick the edge first before applying the fenice. I've also found that you have to put the stuff on THICK and let it dry completely. Then sand and put it on THICK again. Keep doing that until you like what you see.

A lot of the stuff I've made is leather from Maverick. That roll top bag was dark cognac essex. Here is something Maverick has that I think would be pretty similar: http://www.maverickleathercompany.com/horween/horween-seconds/marbled-cognac-essex/ or http://www.maverickleathercompany.com/horween/owners-specials/double-fudge-tumbled-essex/ The tumbled essex is awesome stuff. Really any of the Horween veg tan tumbled leathers are great for making bags.

I think you should definitely try out Maverick. Also, a great positive is as long as you don't cut into the side they will take it back. You have to pay return shipping but being able to return it is quite nice. Most of the time the picture is not the exact side you are getting but sometimes it is. They try to list the actual price of the side if they only have one.

I have a hard time believing Maverick is moving out of the country. It would make no sense at all to do something like that. I've ordered from Maverick numerous times. They are AWESOME to work with. Their customer service is top notch. Having said that...there are some drawbacks. Most of the stuff they have is seconds. You will get sides with bad areas or stains or some loose break etc...They are usually really good about taking photos of the bad area so you have an idea of what you are getting into. Having said that...I have got some stuff from them that didn't look like a second at all. It looked FANTASTIC. But it is hit or miss. Also, it is pretty rare for them to have really big lots of the same leather that hang around for a long time. So if you find a leather you love it would be unlikely that you could order it over and over again.

Lined Wallet Prototype
Hi Im Joe replied to Hi Im Joe's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thank you very much! The lining is flush with the edge of the leather. I used Edge Kote to blend the edges together. I used a spray adhesive. If you go this route be very careful about mating the leather to the lining. I would lay the lining flat and pick up the leather and drop it onto the lining. It is very easy to get creases in the lining. The stitching line is 4-5mm from the edges. It catches the lining all the way around the wallet. Thank you so much! Thank you biglew! I would guess it took 4 hours? I can't really remember...sorry! Thank you Bill! -
I think this is what you are after?

I actually bought the neutral colored fenice paint and mixed in black edge kote (b/c I wanted it to be black in color). It turned out that the combination of both of them worked better than either one by itself.

Roll Top Bag
Hi Im Joe replied to Hi Im Joe's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks! -
I assumed that the folded portion of the fabric would only be where the fabric is not covered by leather. Where the leather covers the fabric you don't really need to fold it. I agree with Fanninator and would use some edge paint instead of traditional burnishing methods. I think it will be pretty hard to glue the lining down precisely enough that you can leave it short of the edge but still be caught up in the stitches. I would stitch all the way around the wallet too if you are going to line it.

I've done wallets like this and I think the best way to do it is to fold the fabric then glue it to the leather after you have already finished the edge of the leather.

Thanks Chris! There is a nice tutorial/template of a bi-fold wallet on here from ducjecs. Check it out if you want to take a shot at a bi-fold wallet. Or if you want this pattern let me know and maybe I'll get crazy and upload it as a .pdf. -

Thanks Slipangle. The one thing I have found annoying about Tiger Thread purchasing is it appears that you can only get .6mm in 1000 meter spools. It's freakin 70 bucks from ludlow leather. I'll definitely post it up! -

Thanks Bob! I appreciate the photo. I'm anxious to see how the 18/3 looks! I wonder if its going to be too small. I guess I'll find out!
