My latest knife sheath
Warren replied to Grunt's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Grunt, love the way you matched the top edge of the sheath with the knife scales. Very artistic touch to a nice utilitarian design. Warren -

Bruce, you failed to mention the auctions that charge you a fee just to get in the door to look at whats for sale. Around here I haven't been to an auction in probably 5 years that didn't charge an entrance fee. And I've never been to a craft show, gun show or business expo that didn't. Some of the weekend flea markets and monthly trade days charge some kind of fee to get in the gate. I will not be shocked when they begin to charge you to browse the mall. People are in business to make money and they will do whatever is necessary to effect the least amount of change to their bottom line as possible. In a free enterprise system (which is the American way) they have every right to do so. I as a buyer have the right to buy from whom I choose and by the same token not buy from anyone I don't. Tim brought up that you wouldn't do business with a store who's prices didn't reflect the true price of their merchandise. I believe he is correct. Wolvenstein reinforced what I posted earlier about the total cost of buying something on E-bay. Both of them bring up the issue of service. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I will pay more to a merchant that provides me good service over one that doesn't for the exact same item. Not similar or close but exact. That is the case where I live. We have a TLF store and another locally owned leather shop that is a Tandy dealer. The locally owned shop provides me with excellent service, advice, help, opinions etc. They are a little higher priced. I don't mind because of the service. The same thing goes on E-bay. If I buy something from a seller and I get good service (well packaged item with timely delivery and good communications) I'm more than likely going to try to buy from that seller again if possible. Yes, earlier I said I was looking for a bargain on E-bay. A bargain can be defined by more than just a cheap price. Wal-mart has by far the cheapest prices on just about everything they sell. I will not buy from Wal-mart if I can buy it somewhere else because from my experience they don't care about me as a customer and they prove that by the level of service they provide. When someone proves to me they appreciate my business I will do business with them again. If I have to pay a little more for that then so be it. Warren -
I'm not laughing Randy. It looks like a great job to me. Warren

Let me introduce myself

I do not understand how you people do miniatures. I have enough trouble doing full size items as it is. Great work! -

I know what you mean about the makers mark Jordan. I don't have one either so I just sign and date my stuff using an awl while it's damp. As usual the layout and design on this one looks great. Can't wait to see it finished. Warren -

I'm with Art on the sniping thing. I put in what I'm willing to pay and forget about it. If I win great and if I don't oh well. I also agree with Bill that you have to be careful and know what your bidding on. Many times I can buy an item new locally and beat the E-bay price (New or used.). Thats with paying local sales tax. There aren't any shipping costs added and I don't have to wait for it to be delivered. As for selling on E-bay the big problem with selling handmade or custom items is that most people looking to buy on E-bay want a bargain myself included. In the beginning this was why almost everything for sale on E-bay were used items that people wanted to get rid of and make a little money off it in the process. Ta da a huge online garage sale or flea market. Now a lot of what is listed is new. In other words people have time and or money invested in the item that they need to recoup. That is something entirely different than making a few bucks from your unwanted used items. Even some of the used items that are now listed are coming from estate, junk and garage sales that people purposely went out and bought for the sole purpose of re-selling on E-bay. People are making a business out of just that aspect of E-bay. That is a whole other animal than what it started out as. I have never tried to sell anything on E-bay so I know nothing about their shipping policies. Having said that, it would make sense to me to cover your handling cost by including it in the reserve price of the item you are listing. Just my two cents worth. Warren -

Topcoat question

I've used Tan Cote on all my holsters so far and have never had any problems with dye bleeding. One of my holsters was accidentally left outside at deer camp during a rain storm. It sat in water all night in the bed of a truck. We stuffed it with paper to draw the water out of the inside and let it dry slowly. When it was dry the gun still fit and the color didn't bleed. I don't think you can ask for more than that. -

Jordan, very nice design as usual! I'm always impressed by how much thought you put into your holsters. I agree with Randy about the stitching. Just dye it black and no one but you will know. Keep up the good work! Warren -
Lets just say that I'd carry one if I had it. I can't give any higher praise than that!

I know what you mean about the wife. Mine always looks in my checkbook and says "Have you been to the leather store again?" to which I say "Yes". Then I get a lecture. Thats when I go to the shop and start making more stuff. Sounds like I'm in good company. And yes the holsters look good too. -
Randy, I like em! You might try stamping them on the inside before you sew them together. If you put it high enough it should still show.
