I have a 205 and I sew anything from wallets, to chaps, to saddles, to pulling collars ,back to wallets and check books. All I have to do is change the thread and needle for the smaller stuff. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My Latest project a Ruger P89 DC Holster
TracyMoss replied to Jordan's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
No, I had a friend that told emailed me his pattern and I just made one like that to fit my 1911. He may have gotten his there, I'm not sure. But the carving pattern is mine. -
I can put a Hemi on a tricycle, but it won't pull a Goose-Neck. The Air stitchers have a tendency to run off with you. So I'm told.

I doubt that machine is $5,000+ for a new one. Adler no longer makes the thing, not since the 80's. Anyhow, I believe the true manufacturer was Pfaff. Adler name, but Pfaff made. Pfaff, Adler, and Ferdinand all had identical machines of one kind or another at one time. And the 1/2 inch is the foot lift. Put that much under there and the machine probably will not work so well. IMO>

The Adler 1296 is more of a medium duty machine. The ones I worked on had a roller foot. Boot tops, etc. A single needle presser foot table machine. Won't be able to do much more than chaps and light belts. Of course, I could be mistaken.

Very nice Wade. Looks like the fourteen years paid off.

He still might get the last laugh, when his wife has to help him wipe his scorched A**. But luck surely isn't on his side.

Depends on what size and how much. If you find yourself needing to split a lot of leather that is under six inches wide, you should probably invest in a hand crank splitter of some sort. The used ones run about $100.00 dollars an inch. Not cheap, but worth it. However if you just do the occational splitting they do make some splitter/skivers like the one you saw except they are can be locked to a certain position and straps canbe pulled through by hand. If you are mainly leveling straps bench mounted lap skiver/splitters work well, but any thing over 3 inches it's not as user friendly. Anyhow, if you can find a used one that just needs the blade worked on, as these can be the best bargain.

I know you were asking Marlon, but the Rubber Mat is very bad on your edge and it doesnt allow for smooth cutting.
-
The skiver is better for lap skiving. Just strap ends, not constant level splitting.

I use a stropping wheel as well, and I get my rouge from RioGrande in Albequerque, NM. However, I do have a stick of the Tandy white rouge. It is too stiff and rubs off like an eraser( flaky ). That is why I recommended the olive oil. You can thin it with some heat and olive oil. Then it is easy to rub into your stropping surface. But use gloves, it is a little messy.

Topcoat question

You might want to use some deglazer to strip the finish a little bit. Let it dry and redo as you said -
Thanks, I'll look him up.

Practice, Keeping your off hand behind the blade, and a stropping wheel (Canvas, felt) on a bench grinder w/ some rouge. Thant's about as simple as I can put it. )f course fifteen different people have 30 different opinions.

What brand? Import?

Is that the Tandy economy splitter?

The Coffe cup deal is just a trial and has a yellow bar at the top that tells me to order the full version.
-
Maybe you can melt it with a little olive oil, I have made a paste out of rouge like that for my strop.

Just seems like you need to be a painter to get the color and shading right.

Thanks for the pattern tip, seems logical, never thought of it.

Elephant holster
TracyMoss replied to BOOMSTICKHolsters's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Looks pretty neat. I made myself this holster, but I like the way this belt loop is set up. Thanks, now I have to make another one. -
Wow, I never have been big on figure carving. I'm just not that good at it and I could never motivate myself to practice much. I just get by with it. The color is that dye or acrylic?
