  1. Great ideas thanks all!!!!
  2. basicly I need two lines like this . . . . . . The problem with measuring is that I am not sure where to measure from after the first hole so that it lines up. If I should measure from the bottom of the hole, top of the hole down, because even going from the center I still get it a little off center even after marking where I want the holes in the first place.
  3. Ok i have an idea i want to try with a leather corset. I need two rows of holes aligned as near perfect as possible. So how do i go about doing this, i need two vertical rows how do i go about keeping the spacing even as when i try just eyeballing this the distance between holes is a little off and for the lace work i have in mind the spacing needs to be as close to perfect as i can get.
  4. Wrap the phone in plastic wrap will help protect it.
  5. Thank you so much for the answer that really does help a lot!!!
  6. was going to suggest maybe oxblood and burgundy mix maybe though not sure how much of each you would have to play with that but I do not airbrush so could not tell you how well that might work.
  7. I see "yes yes collective gasp keep your undies from knotting" Tandy leather selling leather that was meant for upholstery, they say this leather is good for bags and light weight chaps and what not, is it actually good enough for bags and I am assuming that upholstery leather would be chrome tanned which means no stamping or carving am I right?
  8. what thickness of leather are you use?
  9. Tip for sharpening hole punches. Or at least what I do. Get your strop cover a good distance in jeweller's ruse, take your punch put it into an electric drill ( I use a dewalt cordless) put punch at shallow angle on your strop, and run the drill back and forth at a LOW speed, I normaly go back and forth at least three times. You will find that this makes it so your punches are nice and sharp again. Don't ask me what angle because to be honest I do not know at what angle I am keeping it but always keep it at the same angle so you do not accidently miss shappen the punch.
  10. First male corset I have made 4 other corsets and yeah the chain does need to be changed out but that was the only stainless steel I had on me. Here are the other corsets if you want to see, all leather https://gibbinthegremlin.com/collections/corsets no boning in them though for a good reason!
  11. sadly Tandy ships everything from there store here in Sydney the people are great but you can not trust tandy to have everything it says it does on the website which is damned annoying to say the least! Though I do love their leather have fallen hard for their montana hide!
  12. damn thanks Chief Tandy doesn't have it here in Australia the bastards lol was hoping it was from another supplier ah well!
  13. Where do you get the shielding at? And love the work
  14. That is very cool!
  15. Ok just started working with sheep skin leather, veg tanned and undyed. Have dyed a couple of smaller pieces and love the way it takes the dye work, anyways, how do you actually clean the sheep skin as I am also using it for a liner for a bag so if something should spill on it how do you clean it?
  16. Thanks Wedgetail the wife says there is enough room to fit everything a woman would want PLUS a small kitchen sink lol.
  17. Thanks still working on getting better photos but I like the sheep skin lining feels nice and feels stronger then pig skin.
  18. Finally got this tote bag finished the joys of having in laws living with you, really does slow your work down from time to time but anyways here is the updated imgur pics finished product is at the bottom of the page http://imgur.com/gallery/xktyF (had to delete the old album for some reason imgur did not load all the new pics ugg ah well) really came out nice I think.
  19. one other tool that you need that no one mentioned a good set of pliers some times its a real pain in the ass to pull the needle all the way thought the leather so its easier to grab the needle with a pair of pliers and give it that little bit of extra tug it needs to clear the hole!
  20. I have never had any problems, well it take that back did have one problem with one of the pricking irons, I bent the one single punch that it came with (I have this set https://www.tandyleather.com.au/en/product/diamond-hole-chisel-set ) I called them up when it happened and they said to send it back and they sent me a whole another kit free of charge. Other then that I really like the pricking irons they are fast and to be honest you can get away with out sharpening them for a while before you have to sharpen them again. Love the bag and I have yet to do a single gusset like that. Also how thick is that leather I have never used English bridle leather always thought that was more for horse tac then anything else.
  21. I think the square knot is your best bet on this one still.
  22. The main reason it took 28 hours to stitch is due to the size and the amount of stitching over all, not to mention I decided to try something new, no typical 90 degree edge on the gussets or bottom simply stitching them together, gave it a really cool looking round edge, bloody nightmare to get the leather to bend around the corners let me tell you. Came out really nice though and it is all leather, no metal closures. Bag in question https://gibbinthegremlin.com/collections/messenger-bags/products/dark-brown-leather-messenger-bag Though I will freely admit I like using a 90 degree angle because then you do not have to fight the leather. As this design does not really allow for you to glue the leather in place. As I said before I hand stitch everything I do, I use no machines what so ever on my projects, old school is a slow process but love the end result. Oh and the 28 hours does not include the 15 minutes or so of punching holes, using a pricking iron is WAY faster then using an awl and at least for me safer because man that thing hurts when you jam an awl underneath your nail!!!
  23. Yep I had forgotten to burnish the damned edges when I took the shot lol, so had to go back and burnish it though I did not bevel the edges as I liked the square edged look on it. And you are right the spacing on the top was WAY the hell off on this one, but for a prototype it turned out not to bad.
  24. I cant see why that would not work. Best way to find out is with two scrap pieces of leather tie your knot and start yanking on them to see if it will hold up!!
