the start of a chest piece I'm doing for a couple of day camps that happen here in austin each year based on a couple of book series. gotta do about 14 more and half of 'em gotta be kid sized along with 70 (yeah. seven zero. seventy) kids' archery arm guards. gonna be busy busy busy! this is the start of one of the other chest pieces. they wanted battle damage on this one. love the way the claw marks came out on it.

got to see him at the scarborough ren faire sunday. good show. was impressed by both his whip skill and his harmonica playing. he's using the name adam crack for the show and he's there for the next 3 weekends.

go to a beauty supply store of ghetto hair weave store (it's where I got mine from) and get an applicator bottle. the one I got is mostly clear, has an angled tip and was only a buck fifty. scoop or pour the shot into the bottle, put the cap on and pour out the spout tip! helluva lot easier and less oopsie than using something like a squeezed cup.

no prob. it's what we're here for.

didn't get a notice about the reply. anyway, thanks for answering, but that's a little heavier than what I was looking for.

after thinking long and hard on it (ow! you makeded da brain hurts! okay, so actually it wasn't long at all, but it's early. *L*), here's my take on riveting vs stitching. riveting is decorative (a nice byproduct), quicker, easier, cheaper (when comparing machinery costs and even timewise, especially if doing it by hand), easier and quicker (usually) to replace if need be and personally I think stronger when done correctly. stitching can be nice on some things, but to get the strength needed with some items you've got to do a lot of stitching and that can actually be detrimental at times to the strength of the connection since there're a lot of little holes in one area that were formed by basically tearing the leather with a needle instead of removing some cleanly with a punch. I know it's different material, but the effect is still mostly the same. take a piece of vinyl and punch a hole with a hole punch, then poke a bunch of holes in a row with a needle beside it. now pull at the edges. the stitch line will tear before the punched hole will.

dagnabbit! would love to make the armor one, but won't be outa atlanta and back to austin by then.

dunno why you're not getting a larger piccy. *shrug* I just make da goodies. *L* as far as knowing how to make other types of turksheads, nope. no clue whatsoever. seriously. the discussion on the turkshead starts about halfway down page 2, I think.

I'm 40 meself so don't be sayin' "old man"! *L* steampunk has actually been around for something like 20 years. however, it has mostly changed from what is was in the beginning. originally it was closer to hippies meet victoriana, but within the last 5-10 years it's more about fun fantasy sci-fi victoriana and includes "weird west" (think wild wild west with monsters). and I gotta agree that the good mr. tom banwell excels at it. in fact, he's so good that he's not only known here for his wonderful work, but extensively in the steampunk community too. if you're truly interested in learning more about the current version of steampunk, give a good long poke around brass goggles forum. great place to learn more about the asthetics of steampunk.

wolfcoug glad you enjoyed the tutorial and are inspired by it. the reason the handle I used for the turkshead tutorial section looks different from the handle braid tutorial section is that it's braided stainless steel instead of leather. other than the stainless steel and some stitched and laced ones, all the styles I do on a regular basis are pictured on page 2 as templates. there are examples of the others on me myspace page if ya wanna see those.
