Thanks Cowboy Bob. I'll probably be reaching out soon for parts once I get it in hand!

Hi all! I'm working on a deal to buy a singer 16-41. I've spend hours combing the various websites and threads on singers and I'm finding conflicting info. So my questions are: Is the 16-41 a walking foot machine? How thick can it sew? This one is treadle powered, can it be hooked up to an electric motor. I'm a sewing machine novice so thanks in advance Rich

Hey all, i recently acquired 5sq ft of elephant that I'm going to use as trim for a duffle bag. The bulk of the bag is going to be black bridle and the elephant will go on the handle. Front flap, and sides. I know how to burnish the bridle, but I'm wondering about the elephant. Any thoughts on the best way to finish the edges, especially where the two species meet?

Hey folks! I have an interesting question. A good friend and coworker of mine has asked if it is possible to wrap a Moose Skull in leather so it can be mounted on a wood plaque and hung on a wall. Yeah, a Moose Skull. I'm thinking of a thin veg tanned hide to wet form on it, but beyond that I'm at a loss. I've seen some folks talked about wet forming to a Skull using a vacuum. Anyone ever done something like this before. The Skull is about 4' wide at its widest point.. Thanks all! Rich

What about using some firm paper board or cardboard? You could glue and stitch the leather to the board and have it removable.

Pink messenger bag
Wdfd908 replied to Wdfd908's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thank you. That top finish was very different from other leathers I've worked with. It also affected the flesh side by not letting it absorb the glue. -
Here is a one off messenger bag a coworker requested. It's pink top finished leather (almost a plastic coating) and lined in black suede. The accent and strap is 9oz black Horween Chromexcel with ridgeprint. The edges are finished with glossy black edge paint from Buckleguy. It is all hand saddle stitched with Maine Thread. It's the third messenger bag I've done so please feel free to make suggestions on improvements. Thanks

I'm not. I'm near Brattleboro, the opposite corner of the state. I do get to Burlington a few times a year. Are you near there?

Welcome! I too am in Vermont and a self taught. This is a great place to read and learn from others. I have improved my skill quite a bit from the knowledge of others here. Rich

I typically use full grain, but I have used top grain. The top grain won't patina like full grain, but it still is durable and good leather. I have a customer who wants a messenger bag out of bright pink top grain. I've done some work on it and it seems to work just as well.

Thanks folks. I'm going to try Wet forming, but if it doesn't work I have a plastic case on order

Hey Folks. I just got a new phone and want to make myself a new leather case for it. I've had sleeve cases and the like, but I'm really looking for a simple snap on case that is made of leather. I've seen them all over the Internet, but not sure how to do it. Here is an example: https://www.incase.com/shop/iphone-cases/incase-leather-snap-case-for-iphone-5/ Thoughts on how to make one of these?

Herman Oak or W&C English bridle re post from supplier

Check out Seidel tanning. They are in Milwaukee and use USA hides. They specialize in custom work too. I've only ordered their overruns but it is beautiful stuff. -
I ended up rubbing with glycerine soap, followed by canvas. That made the fibers sit so I could dye the edges. Once dyed, I rubbed beeswax/neatsfoot oil mix on them and took an edge slicker to it. They are certainly not amazing edges, but now it has a finished look to it.

Thanks Michael. That's what I thought, but I figured I would check.

I have some amazing 4oz waxed and plated Nubuck that I'm planning on making into a variety of items large and small. As a start I made a sunglasses case last night. I'm wondering how to finish the edges on this. I started sanding the edges and they did not clean up well. Should I treat it like normal veg tan leather? I typically sand, glycerine soap, buff, dye, neatsfoot/beeswax, burnish to get a good edge. Will that work?

I buy my waxed poly thread from Buckleguy.com.

I have not taken a class. I watched a lot of YouTube Videos and read a ton of articles here. Other than that, I'm a hands on learner, I started with a few coasters with suede sewn on, then a few belt, and within 3 weeks I made my first briefcase. The thing to do is find something you want to work on (saddle stitching for example), watch the videos, then practice. I usually work at night after my kid is asleep and my wife is watching TV. The more I do the better I become.

I too am an amateur hobbyist. For me, I have found 4-5oz leather is the sweet spot. If I want something thin, I use one piece (wallet backs. A little thicker, I'll add a thin lining (3oz suede or such). If I want it heavy duty, like a belt, I'll use 2 pieces of 5oz back to back and stitch them. I have made bags, wallets, belts, briefcases, etc and that seems to work well. I have also bought thicker and thinner leathers, I have some beautiful black 2 oz buffalo hides that a PERFECT for wallet lining and pockets. As for where to buy? As a hobby it I don't need top quality so I tend to buy seconds. Two places I shop from are Brettuns Village Leather in Maine and Maverick Leather Company in Oregon. I like Brettuns because they have a good prices, online ordering, and offer free shipping in the US. They also have a variety of tools and hardware. Maverick has a wider selection, including Horween, WC, and HO. I tend to buy from them as they have more variety in color and thickness and have specials on Facebook a couple times a week. Maverick charges you for shipping and only seems to take phone orders. You asked about Horween, they have some great leathers and some consider them a gold standard (Chromexcel) They are good and have been doing it for a century. If you want to buy Horween, you should go through someplace like Maverick who sells a ton of Horween seconds.

I was of the same mind...it's so simple there must be a pattern. I did a quick Google search. Here is what I used before. https://www.pinterest.com/niceyutana/cup-sleeves/. Like I said, add an inch or two to the length and an inch to the height for a tumbler.

looking for some help with a leather portfolio/envelope
Wdfd908 replied to metroplexchl's topic in Hardware and Accessories
I like weld wood contact cement. If you take the time to let it cure, it works amazing. The smell though...my wife accused me of huffing -
I've placed several orders with Maverick Leather. The leather is great, prices are good, and the staff has always been good to deal with. My one complaint is with shipping. It seems to be steep and takes a while. My last order from them took 3 days to process, 6 to be delivered and cost $45 for 3 sides. I say this not to deter anyone, I like their selection and will certainly order from them again.
