Spontaneous Combustion and Safety With Chemicals
Handstitched replied to Sheilajeanne's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
The round bales are used a lot down here. When theres a huge paddock full of them , they remind me of cheese. ( thinking with my stomach ...again) The huge square bales are also used, mainly for export. You're one lucky man indeed . We look back at the things that has happened to us over the years and wonder how we ever survived it. The really dumb things I've done, OMG , I'm lucky to be here . Someone was looking over us I'm sure HS -

Yeh man, its right at the end, the fob watch is playing a tune , and the ' when the music stops, ' its all on . You get a good look at 'Indios' hand . And even his nails on other fingers are all nice clean & even...and not a single speck of dirt, no calluses, no grease or grime from the guns. And ' Mortimer' rides off into the sunset , as ' Manco' ( Clint) grabs the bag of cash stuck in the tree....with a wagon full of dead bodies. You could always fast forward to the end? Even in ' Hang Em' High' Bruce Derns teeth are perfect .Were dentists that good in the ' wild west' ?... .. hmmmm? Just the silly things I notice . Maybe I'm just a bit too observant ?? HS -

G'Day friend. The silly things I notice. I watched ' Fistful of Dollars & ' For a Few Dollars More' for the umpteenth time yesterday, my faves, I never get bored with them, but one of the things I noticed, especially in For A few Dollars More, is when ' Indio' & Colonel Mortimer ( Van Cleef) are having a stand off, I noticed 'Indio' had a manicure, not even a speck of dirt on his nails . I didn't know bandits had manicures , LOL . I love watching these westerns, especially love the rigs they have. I think Clint used the same rig in every early western he's done. HS -
Spontaneous Combustion and Safety With Chemicals

Like pretty much all of us, I also use solvents. I use acetone every day, that has a flash point of 25 degrees C . And toluene that I use to thin down contact adhesive also has a low flash point. Used to work with these nasties , and a few others every day making fibreglass pools long ago . The most dangerous time was hot Summers, the whole place becomes a lot more volatile . A mix of resin mixed with MEKP ( catalyst) left in a pot can self combust if left long enough. Thats how fibreglass factories go up. And static can also be deadly . I also worked in petrol stations a long time ago, seems all my life I've worked with dangerous substances . Off topic : Lately, here in Oz, people throwing batteries out in the rubbish, causing fires in the back of the trucks. OOPS!! HS -

@fredk This is what I do when I make a boo boo on a belt. Too good & ex$y to waste. On this occasion, correct initials, wrong leather . First you see it , and then you don't I make a piece to go over the top...and charge a little extra, of course. I have done this a few times in the past, they don't take long to sell either. HS

Try doing that with a 4ltr tin of acetone, pouring into a smaller tin . Even with a funnel, the acetone just runs down the side of the tin and not into the funnel making a dangerous and ex$y mess all over my bench. I can't even find a pouring attachment for the tin at any hardware shop. @fredk in my case, it will be a scene from ' Bullet' Steve McQueen, when the petrol station blows up . HS

I might share a little trick I use in the event I stuff up on a belt . I'll put it in the ' How Do I Do That ' thread. HS

Reinforcing: Leather case to carry a motorcycle battery
Handstitched replied to Littlef's topic in How Do I Do That?
How heavy is the battery ? around 1 -1.5 kg? I'd be going with my gut and reinforce it. But yes, it will be heavy on your shoulder, you may even wish to make a shoulder pad of some sort . And, batteries having acid in them, I'd be putting plenty of sealer or waxes or both on the threads. HS -
off topic>> I did a simple task on my old tractor at the weekend.......in my fave nice- clean- white- T shirt. What was I thinking?? When I finished, there was a big black smudge on the front.....DOH !! took 2 days to clean it. My dying bench is well away from the other benches to avoid any' mistooks' ...and any potential cursing & swearing . HS

You have quite a a good selection there Fresh herbs are the best in cooking . Dried herbs out of a jar, are OK, but don't seem to have the same flavour as fresh herbs. hs -

I do I have two pairs of the same boots, one pair for around the paddock etc. and the other I wear at markets . I polish them both . It helps keep them a little water proof and comfy , and neat and tidy for markets . Also, as a wee lad going to school, I polished my shoes every day. HS -

That looks so beautifully lush & green . I've never actually seen cumin before, except in powdered form in a jar , something I use in curries all the time. I use to put ' dill' on a simple cheese on toast, that was way back when I was in school . Come home from school , snack, as all kids do. . I think thats when my culinary interest began. Dill is a very aromatic herb . I used to mess around with damper, (a bush bread, made of flour, a pinch of salt, and water made into a bread like doh and normally cooked on an open fire . ) but I used cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate etc. made my own version, cooked in the oven. Damn good it was too . Weather has been a bit strange lately . Yesterday was nice, until the late afternoon . Then a storm hit. Today it was cold...again. Weird. HS -
Its been a while since I've seen one of those. Looks great

Sorry @Dwight , I thought I was onto something Its the thought that counts . HS

You should patent that . Might come in handy to repair scratches etc . A bit like body filler on a car, fill scratch , smooth out or sand, dye over the top. HS

Not so much as an oops, but my indecisiveness. Starting a project, " do I make one of these? but I like the other ', but, these are cool" when I do finally choose, which carving pattern? , theres so many. Takes for ever to decide . By the time I've finally decided , its lunch time Yup !! on knife sheaths , or forgetting to sew on belt loops and realising after the case is assembled ...doh !! HS

You really could have some fun with that . Looks like Genghis Khan , true . Geez Frodo, you have our imaginations running wild here . Could always channel some Star Trek ? Klingons perhaps? Make a Klingon character out of it ? In a Darth Vader voice : " I .....am your Ramen " lol HS

@chuck123wapati Hello friend, wasn't sure whether to talk about this, or where to post it, but theres a certain individual that keeps freezing when doing press conferences. I'll keep that ' stuff' starting with ' P'' well out of the conversation . However, I have recognized the condition, similar to what my Dad has experienced in the past. Dad used to just 'freeze' , sometimes mid sentence, doing simple tasks like boiling a kettle, or when mid- stride when he stood up. Its scary sh**t ! They are called ' syncope's ' . Its either dehydration, medication/s, or perhaps a combination of both. But ever since the Dr's stopped the dementia medication, and simplified other meds, he's hardly had an episode since. One Dr even said, "some dementia medications are more trouble than they are worth" . While theres no cure for dementia, he hasn't got any worse after coming off his dementia medication. So just wondering if said 'person that freezes' has dementia ? HS -
