I have a 1875 book on harness making that gives recipes, but its mostly for black.

I am not happy with my edges on completed harness parts ...what am I doing wrong? I've tried saddle soap, beeswax/paraffin combo, sanding, etc. I have a motorized burnisher, but my edges don't seem to stay nice/hold up no matter what I put on the edges. Any suggestions? I'm using Hermann Oak harness leather. Thanks in advance.

Beautiful work ! I hope in 25 years I can come close to that I'm putting in a call Monday to Campbell Randall for a machine.

Thank you Big Sioux Saddlery for the advice. I was hoping it was just me. I'll keep it for wider work, but I guess I will need to invest in another machine( soon). Will a cowboy or cobra do the job? I'm mainly making pony carriage/show harness, a lot of narrow, dainty work.

I've posted on here before for help with a Landis regular lockstitch machine. It's sewing great, no problems on wider straps but I'm having issues with sewing narrow but thick straps, mainly uptugs on dainty pony harness... the straps are 1/2 inch wide, 11 oz harness leather doubled and folded over and cemented /tacked. The foot wants to walk over the edge, I'm having trouble with precision on these and it's driving me crazy! Anyone have tips on doing neat work with these machines or is it me?

I purchased a Landis 1 over the winter.... this forum has been a HUGE help in getting it up and running. I had work done on the shuttle, etc. It will now sew a consistently nice stitch. The last issue I seem to be having, is it will not sew a straight stitch. The machine wants to walk the leather off the right side unless I guide it( and I've been making stitch grooves as a guide)My fingers are too close to the needle for comfort lol. I made sure the feet and needle are aligned. Any one know what I could do to fix this? I really like the machine otherwise, and have been using it almost daily. Thanks for any input.

I have one with a custom stand, but I'm in Minnesota

I have been looking for a leather stapling machine. Found one, it's an antique and wire feed. No name or model. Does anyone still use something similar? I'm worried about spending the money and having a junk machine. Thank you for any input.

Landis 1 thread looping on bottom
Alexis1234 replied to Alexis1234's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Spoke to Eli this evening...said my shuttle would have been non- operational the way it was. Sometimes you would have had tension, at other times the bobbin thread would have "freewheeled". He installed a tension screw and a spring. He's sending it back- we'll see if that was my issue. -
Landis 1 thread looping on bottom

This is the first Landis I have ever worked on.. I have no idea if this is a "regular" shuttle or not. I'm just going on what I've been told -
Landis 1 thread looping on bottom
Alexis1234 replied to Alexis1234's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I have taken everyone's suggestions and checked and rechecked over and over again It's still randomly looping threads on the bottom... gentleman in Illinois that specializes in Landis 1 looked at my shuttle- it's not a "normal" Landis 1 shuttle- in fact he's never seen one like it before. Absolutely no way to regulate tension on the bobbin- no screws, nothing. I've sent it to him and we'll see what happens. We're thinking that this is the problem. Thank you again for all the help and suggestions! -
Putting nylon webbing inside of folded leather straps
Alexis1234 replied to Anubis78's topic in Sewing Leather
I know for tugs on horse harness, some harness makers will sandwich nylon webbing in between the leather for added strength.- 7 replies

Landis 1 thread looping on bottom
Alexis1234 replied to Alexis1234's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Awesome info! I'm thinking it is the bobbin that's causing the problem... I don't have a winder and have been tediously winding it by hand. I'm going to try the drill, sounds like a great idea. Thank you. -
Landis 1 thread looping on bottom
Alexis1234 replied to Alexis1234's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thank you for the responses. I'm going to play around with the machine in a bit and see if i can get this corrected. I will be posting a link to show how its running/ threaded- even if I'm doing it wrong...Nothing wrong with help from others. When I was researching this machine, I noticed there wasn't much out there and if I can save one from the scrap yard, that would be great. Thanks! -
I purchased a Landis 1 harness machine that was not running. I've managed to locate parts, needles, manual , etc and I have it stitching. Problem is, it'll sew a beautiful tight stitch for quite a while, then it'll start looping the threads on the bottom of my work. I have the correct number foot, needle and thread combo and I've played with the tension, etc. Any one familiar with these machines and what I need to adjust? Thanks!

Thank you. The hames are stainless steel- I purchased them. I assume by "tunnel loop" your referring to a long embossed box loop?

I posted this in the wrong category..meant to post it it in "crtitique my work" category, sorry

This was my first attempt at harness work..hame straps and short tugs for buckle in traces. I hand stitched it at 10 spi. Looking for constructive criticism. Thanks
