Thank you both. Harry

can be a constraint on shoe purchase, I'd guess. I'd be interested in the tools but cost of shipping and import taxes would throw them too high for me. Good luck selling them. Harry

Lacquered Maple Butcher block for table top
bermudahwin replied to MrLentz's topic in How Do I Do That?
Should look great, I use a mat at the moment (circumstances dictate) but would also look at polyprop boards, as used in clicking presses. I used to have a 6 foot one that was great for harness and straps. Enjoy your shop. -

Have just bought steel wool, and have loads of vinegar, so going to give it a go, and see. -

Apparently it's a scorpion... Or a traditional coloring made with iron and vinegar, I'm off to play. -

Lacquered Maple Butcher block for table top
bermudahwin replied to MrLentz's topic in How Do I Do That?
Unless you are using a heavily lacquered butchers block top for looks, it is worth noting that historically we used end grain butchers blocks, about 3 foot x 2 foot x 4 inches, and last job each Friday was to oil and scrape it to make it smooth and maintain condition. Total pain in the rump to do, but lovely surface to work on particularly with round knives, head knives and half moon knives. To note: They're very expensive They're very heavy Dye will ruin them so cover with grey board to protect them. If its for the looks, just go with what you like -
That's a good shout, too, I'd have never thought of it, H

If it were authenticity you were looking for, single cut, sharply bevelled would give the shape of cuts in wood or stone.

Ogham, is a single straight line alphabet, so if you cut it definition becomes harder. I am showing ogham and latin for H, usually they would have been on the corner of a post. (from Wikipedia) You could add definition by shaing one side, or both, but having tried that with Runes it looks odd to me. When I did runes I built them up a bit, cut the outline and shaded from the white area to the cut. It was about 30 years back, so I have no photos sorry.

Any DIY Splitters/skivvers out there?
bermudahwin replied to SilverForgeStudio's topic in Leather Machinery
In bookbinding, we often split to 0.6 mm and the band splitters at the suppliers are a godsend, hand spokeshaving is mind blowing. -
Keen to know a bit about the edge planes, and how they hold sharpness. H

Thanks Stormcrow, All of the IT triggers point to their domain providers in Canada. From my understanding of UK sales sites, they seem to be lacking in basic details. It's a shame as it would be great to have more suppliers in the UK. If you have a receipt with contact details please pm me as I like the look of one of the tools. Thank you Harry

Thank you, I saw it on Amazon and the price seemed a we bit high... I'll check the others. Best H

Please, Black Mountains Leather, PM me, and let me be happy, until then Harry says Kind of a rant warning. I AM MAKING NO ACCUSATIONS AGAINST ANYONE. As a business owner I am responsible to know the source of anything I buy, and (within parameters) the details and locations of my customers. This is a worldwide requirement to prevent money laundering activities. I have to become COMFORTABLE that anyone with whom we trade is sound, I do not have to prove or verify this, just be able to gain comfort. Therefore if all I can find is a website that does not work properly, with absolutely no details as to the address of the business, nor the owners, and the contact is purely an email address, I cannot gain comfort. Others may be able to, but I cannot. As I said above "a previous life was spent investigating storefront fraud on major sales websites, so I may be more conservative than most". I also regulated Insurance companies that sometimes did not stand up to scrutiny and ! dealt with cross border financial compliance trying to stop people who were avoiding taxes or funding terrorism so I know it is harder fo me to gain comfort than others. Ever wondered why so many ebay, Amazon, Wish, etc storefronts use the same photographs and prices for the same items? They may be fine, but there MAY BE a scam going on. If a holding co in the far east sells through one store it may breach tax limits and have to pay taxes, but if 10 employees set up stores and sells 1/10th of the owners total in the EU, none of them will breach a taxation limit, whereas the owner would have... who is paying the taxes? None of them. That is money fraud. NOW FOR THE KICKER If I trade with them and have a resonable suspicion that this is going on, I am then facilitating financial crime! Which is why I find it harder to get comfortable with faceless companies. Sorry for the rant, but good websites have a contact address and phone number, its not much to ask.

I have now received mine from Sergey, and am very happy with the results. Our logo is long established from our consultancy business, so working it into a stamp was 'interesting', each is approx 1" / 25mm, my wife / business partner likes the untextured version, I like the textured version. This is a quick grab of the loho in print (its smoother around the edges) Without any texture to squares: With texture to represent colours:

They seem to be in Canada from the Domain details, but I cannot verify anything else about location, so even though it looks good, I will not use them. (a previous life was spent investigating storefront fraud on major sales websites, so I may be more conservative than most) Harry

Years back I used to get patterns in greyboard that were bound in brass around the edges, so that we could make a small run of a new design in the design shop, prior to production. I suppose that the acrylic, laser cut ones may be the current equivalent, but am keen to locate a supplier of the old ones. It is the cobblers, knives running around the brass binding that gave them the name 'clickers', and it would be good to get some made. My old supplier in Rushden, Northamptonshire has ceased to exist, as has the back up in Northampton. Any help or hints would be nice. I will reach out to Barker Black who make lovely shoes, as their design philosophy page includes this: The "Clickers" cut every piece of the pattern by hand using brass bound patterns, selecting only the finest grades of calf and suede void of imperfection. http://barkerblack.com/design-philosophy H

Yeah, I got caught out like that once too... I am still awaiting my Scalextric Set from 1972! Santa is not necessarily reliable, I got a single soccer boot one year, with a note to say if I was good the other would come with the birthday elf. My Aunt brought it on 26th Dec, but I have never trusted Santa since. Happy to eat, drink and be merry, just not Santa Focussed -
I just found that out when I went to look up the opening times of the one that is closest, to find it closed.... Have applied for Business Membership at the distant one. I'd watch out for rationalisation in the USA too. Harry
