Sorry, don't know, but may well want some. H

I often read requests for help, mainly the ones on 'where can I buy this or that?' type of subject, where the member has not put his or her location in their profile. The result is that people will figure out answers, often going to the trouble to get and post web addresses etc, that are irrelevent to the poster as they are on different continents. Please could you put your location in your profile; not your home town or state necessarilly (although someone may offer to help out on a one to one basis if you're close enough) but a hint such as UK, USA, Eastern Europe could really be useful. Some of us are trying to make a living, but are happy to help, but it is a bit deflating to find out you may have recommended popping into Tandy for a chat, when the OP is in Timbuktoo. Thanks guys H

Seem to remember they took all of our mineral rich real-estate at the same time... Just kidding guys, some of my best friends are American H -
Its contagious. I have just phoned a photography shop 25 minutes away, and asked if they still had a used camera body that was online. Yes, they did, I asked that they hold it for me to look at, I'd be ther in 30 minutes. Full Name, Full Address, Telephone number... I have just cut off my nose to spite my face, as after pointing out that their main competitor in town held a similar body for 2 days, on just my first name, explained that without the detail they could not hold it. Why? They would set up an account, and hold it against the account. No, they will not, I wished them luck selling it, and told them not to bother. Shame because it had the two attributes that the one across town did not have and was only a few buck more expensive. Back to looking, or going in with cash and getting it to the stage they have to refuse the sale as I wont give my address. Its crazy, as my name is near unique in the UK, since my Dad, Senior passed in 1993, I am one of two with the same name, and the other lives 220 miles away (yup, we are related). I never give out unnecessary detail, I know how it is used. When I said about the database it would be going on, the shop guy said it was not going on any database... and got baffled when I explained that in-store data, was covered by our great GDPR rules too.

Gusset Virginity
bermudahwin replied to Carnivore's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Great first bag, but gusset virginity conjures up an entirely different subject Thanks for the late night smile. H -
I cannot understand your reference to optics... If you are protesting, you're on a loser on this site, if not, you're translation does not give clarity. Fake leathers have significant environmental impact, with disadvantages compared to leather. They have uniformity of finish and the ability to produce exactly the same every time, no scars, no warble etc. But that is hard to equate to "better". Your 3 posts have not given me any real idea as to what you are trying to tell this Leatherworker forum.

There's one here in the UK too...

Intriguing, how do you ship them? I recently made a 58" waist belt and had to loosely 'roll' the belt into a 12" square box, to have any chance of posting it. Cheers H

Does anyone make traditional clicking patterns?
bermudahwin replied to bermudahwin's topic in Suppliers
I am having a small pattern done in brass-bound board, and also in zinc, to be able to compare for future work. I will report back when I've tried them. Harry -
Good points, very well made. I am lucky that I buy by the side, butt, hide skin etc, but witnessed this precise issue at my leather factors a couple of weeks back. Newbie "how much for the whole goatskin?" got his answer... Newbie "thats more than I wanted to pay; how much for this central panel, to cover a book?" when he was told it would be the same as the skin, as he was leavving no more than 4 inches around the edge and that made it unfeasible to sell, he was flummoxed. He could not understand that even though he may have been leaving 3 sq ft (total) it was worthless to the salesman. H

and you need to be open minded if you search Google for ".... I'm seriously into leather" However, there are parts of the forum that may help there too.... Welcome on board H

It depends on the method of wet forming, as some of the old cycle saddle makers would use heat and water to form the firmer saddles. Cuir boulli or boiled leather can have some odd side effects if not fully done in the usual manner. It does not really need boiling, and I have done 3D workd by slow drying very well cased leather in an oven set for meringues, so just very gentle heat over a long period. If the leather was not wet enough when formed, of it was dried too quickly or with too much heat in an industrial setting, if would/could be susceptible to damage as it would be brittle. I have a cycle saddle that I neatsfoot oil every 6 months, and it has been on the bike since about 1985, and is still functioning well. It is just a suggestion, but seems plausible to me. Wet forming and allowing to dry naturally should not have the same issues. If making Bombards, Bottels and Blackjacks, another method was to use heated sand to force out the Bottel into a bottel shape; some of the techniques made the leather as hard (and brittle) as wood, and was used for armour. My 2 cents, as it works for me... I have a double sided wooden strop, one side has heavy horse hide (6mm) glued skin side to wood, flesh side out. Fed it with lard, then sprinkled it with carborundum powder (800 grit) and worked that in. Tapped off the excess. Other side has same leather set up, but just a very small amount of red jewellers rouge rubbed on. Then another strop with skin side out. When you get your blade, use your stone to initial sharp, then the grit side, then the rouge side, then the skin. Haven't needed the grit much at all since first sharpening, as the rouge and skin keep the edge. My stone for these knives is a hard Arkansas Stone, bought 40 years ago from a retiring carpenter. H

How I now straighten leather for strap cutting
bermudahwin replied to RockyAussie's topic in How Do I Do That?
HOW DARE YOU, YOU RAPSCALLION!!!! Oh, sorry, I meant, whatever works for you. I find stropping on carborundum, then on flesh side works for me. Also sharpening knives is massively theraputic as you really need to conentrate, and empty your mind of the extraneous claptrap, or you'll need help picking up your fingers. H -

With bad grace and swearing... Oh and using a cutout board guide. Oh and has anyone mentioned practice, practice, practice I like the outcomes, but its like doing piano scales you keep practicing until it feels easier. If anyone has a tip to make it easy from day one, please PM me and we can set up a business...

First knife sheath
bermudahwin replied to TDragon's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I can only echo Riem's comments... Welcome, and look at it with an open mind, noting anything you may want to change next time. Bikermutt always suggests redoing it as Riem says, which is a great way to see your own improvements. At college we were taught the four fs of design... form, function, fashion and finance... you've nailed all of them to a point, but is it the point you want to be at for this piece. Best H -
Significantly, there's a wealth of information online regarding this, likely to be unlawful in UK, also appears to be in many US states. There are some ways and some states where they're ok, but in UK even manufacture may be unlawful, it is odd, but the legislation is a bit woolly worded to give LEOs room to decide. There's a great example where a bath sponge can be considered a weapon due to the intent of the carrier. Intriguing use of coins as weights, though. H
