If we use a say oval shape to have a design say basketweave inside, how do we get nice sharp edges to the stamp design when only using a part of the stamp, i.e. angled stamp so it goes right up to the border line When I try it with a tilted stamp the end result is a sharp design at one end and fading all the way to where it's lifted

The reason showing on embroidery machine is with up to 15 seperate needle assemblies on a single machine tensions are a major problem, and some stitch designs may use 15 colours and 30-50 thousand stitches causing a lot of lost time if one colour goes wrong towards the end of a run and not notices for a short time
-
I dont have this machine but in the UK they sell a spring tension gauge designed for sewing machines, so you can measure the tension on pulling out from the bobbin as well as the top thread, its a handy way to make a list of different tensions with different threads

Doing a google search on Acanthus Lilly does not show any likeness, so must be either Heraldic or just highly stylised

I bet that took a lot of time to tighten it up after you finished lacing it.But you are right it does look great, I think membership of Leatherworker.net and watching Nigel Armitage video's plus you tube one is equivalent to the best part of a degree in leather making, and just like a university degree's, its gives you the knowledge but the skills to use it takes another good few years

Hand stitching and still a learner," that's my excuse for wiggly stitching lines"

where does Sheridan style come from originally, it seems a strange plant

Many thanks, gives me something to think about To me the inside seems just dont look very nice but a lot less sewing, still woke up this morning, which is always a good start at 71 so guess its rolled edges for me
-
Thanks Koreric Yes seen those posts Basically looking at making a Tote bag with outside seams like say a messenger bag rather than internal seams, I have already designed it with rolled edges, but never having worked before with Chrome was just looking to see if there was any alternative to make edges more natural I did try burnishing with either water, Gum Trag or Bees wax and all combinations; and can get a half hearted finish using a dremel and holding the leather between two thin plywood panels to hold the edge more firm whilst doing it, just leaving about 5 mm gap of leather edge

I put two layers of towel under my granite slab and it made a massive difference to the noise

Have looked through many posts but not really had any success in my quest I don't wont to use paints etc on the edges, so need to bring that option up Using very fine about 1mm chrome leather similar to furniture leather, looking to treat the edges without using paints, have tried Gum Trag with limited success and the same with bees wax but is there a better way like heat tools etc Tried creasing with double pronged creaser, and heat, works well with veg tan but hardly a mark with Chrome is it a case of more heat?

We had a embroidery machine which is just a sewing machine but with up to 15 needles on a moving bar that change for different colours, we ran this for 12 years at 8 hours solid each daywith the following oiling and never a problem Oil the hook first thing in the morning and after 4 hours Machine itself once a week just one or two drops
-
I used some neatsfoot oil on some dry veg tan, one coat made a good difference and on some i did two coats but apart from darkening the leather the two coats did not make much if any difference, but i was liberal with the first coat using a paint brush

Thanks folk's, I have been wetting the edge and then with a damp finger picking up the powder and placing it on the edge, but not a great success, different amounts endup on some parts others dry up at different times. then i saw a video of someone using Tandy issue and it came in a bottle as a semi liquid, hence the question. I guess there must be a certain mix ratio that stays liquid and does not dry up, my own tests left me with dried up gunge or coloured water

Don't place it over the top of the basement half inch steel is quite heavy

I think this is a optical rangefinder rather than a periscope The two ends are a fixed distance apart and by using pre set optics you can figure out the range , ones on Battleships had lens about 20-30 feet apart but did the same job

Having brought gum tragacanth in powder form, how much water do you add to it to make it a liquid form you can keep and use as required
-
How about using tan coloured or brown shoe polish on it and giving a good polish afterwards

Looks like the sort of thing a old Watch Maker or Model maker could easily make up for you

Just proves that simple can be also beautiful if well designed
