  1. Don't want to sound negative but the equipment required for thinning large pieces in any sort of even way is neither small nor cheap. Keep this hide for something else and order another one in the thickness that you need. Thick chrome tan makes very nice valet trays, which are easy Xmas gifts and everybody wants one.
  2. I dropped my skiving knife last month, it was one of those moments like watching it rolling off the bench in slow motion... Before I had a chance to think my instinct kicked in and I caught it in the air. No stitches thankfully, but lots of blood.
  3. How often do you guys oil you machines (beyond the daily drop of oil in the red holes)?
  4. Yeah that was it, thanks Richard! The other spring is much softer. The presser foot still gets stuck halfway down, it's probably some moisture or something... maybe some WD40?
  5. Ahhhh YES! There is another spring in a clear baggie, I was wondering what that is... I'll go check it out and I'll be back shortly
  6. Unfortunately no luck with that thing... it's leaving a huge impression on the leather (2 layers of 2mm chromexcel). So I started backing up the foot pressure from the big screw on the top, except it was my first time doing it and I had no way of knowing how far I could go. So I kept unscrewing and trying another stitch, hoping the screw would have some sort of stop, but it doesn't, and eventually the whole thing popped off. It must have some sort of spring inside. I pushed it back in and screwed it in, started sewing for a couple of minutes, lifted the foot to make a turn, and then the foot wouldn't come down no matter what. Just got stuck in the up position. In the end the only thing I could do was push the pedal a little and it came down with big clang. I gave it some oil on the screw from the top and it's fine now (I think) but yeah, not a good experience with the left toe harness foot. I tried them all actually and honestly the one that came mounted on the machine is probably the best. But I can't stitch very close to the edge with it, or use a guide.
  7. Not really though. I shop from Buckleguy and other US sellers regularly and DHL is usually between USD $60 and $100 depending on the size and weight of the package. Sometimes I get whole sides shipped for that price.
  8. I'm printing that chart, thank you sir Aaaaaand now Vardhman's are shut for Xmas, and they're out of stock of all the colours I want anyway, plus with the state of AusPost I'd probably receive it next Xmas. Back to Etsy and Ebay.
  9. Hey, are you sure about those conversions? I just called them and they said 277 = M10...
  10. Gotcha, thanks guys, this helps a lot. I guess I'm better off just finding some colour names and start ringing people to see if they have it.
  11. It is an incredible machine and I cant thank you enough for encouraging me to get it, you were right as usual. I've been casually playing with it for about a day on and off and I can already thread it, stitch straight, turn, stitch backwards and fall on the existing holes, wind a bobbin, change the length between holes, and I haven't even touched the manual yet. I just need to learn more about thread and foot tensions when I change leather thickness, learn about the other presser feet options, and work on my finishing stitch technique a bit. And then I can use it on an actual bag. For now I made those two for the shop, just for practice, and it's already a lot more than I thought I'd be doing after 1 day with my very first sewing machine
  12. I know, thanks, I think it's the ones Rocky Aussie recommended. I couldn't figure out their sizes, and mostly I couldn't understand their comment in the bonded polyester section "If the colour you want is not here, please give us a call as we most likely will have it". Due I don't know what colour I want, I want to see what you have so I can choose LOL I hate it when people can't be bothered updating their websites, I guess another reason why I prefer shopping from everywhere but Australia. Most of them seem happy with their existing customers and can't be bothered making the effort to get new ones.
  13. I find I get better shipping times from something shipped from the North Pole, or the moon, than what I get from Australia post lately.
  14. Hey guys, I need some advice on buying thread. I went to the place that a few people recommended, and then this happened. Are these guys for real trying to charge me over $200 shipping for $76 worth of thread? LOL Anyway what other options are there with global shipping and some variety in colours? Thanks Spyro
  15. Machine stitching Vs hand stitching I can live with that

    Bag for Dad

As a dad I'd be very proud to receive something like that... maybe one day Well done!
  17. Yeah it took me a bit to understand that I'm supposed to operate both pedals with one foot, initially I did it like driving a manual car: one foot on the clutch and one foot on the gas :D I think Wizcrafts and Rocky would get an aneurysm if they saw me like that LOL
  18. I actually don't mind the look of the slanted stitches... like I said it looks exactly like my hand stitching, and because I make bags I think there will always be some awkward location the machine can't get to and I'll have to handstitch, and it's better to look consistent.
  19. No I'm not touching the bobbin... This is bobbin side, same stitching, but on a newer leather that's had a bit of NFO recently Does look a bit better. The guides, I just don't see it... I tried them both on a belt just then, and there's just no way to get the guide roller close enough to the needle without hitting the foot. Maybe that's close enough for some heavy belts The dropdown guide didn't even clear the foot lever, I had to take the lever off to operate it, and then the same problem. It just doesn't get close enough to the stitch line. Maybe I need a different foot, I guess?
  20. Other than that the machine came with Brian's narrow plate pre-installed, and it's generally both a dream and a nightmare. A dream to operate, very controllable, very intuitive. A nightmare to understand which one of the countless combinations of needle, settings, attachments and tuning is the best for what I want to do every time. Maybe that's why people own more than one machine, because once they set one up exactly how they like it they're too scared to change anything LOL I also got two guides, and after a bit of trying I don't think I'll ever use either of them. They're just in the way, and it's easier than I thought to scribe a line and just follow it by eye.
  21. Well the Cobra class 4, the Cowboy CB4500 (and another one I can't recall) are supposedly clones of the Juki 441, and they all start with a "4" so I guess there is broadly a class 4 machine :D
