  1. Here is another way to do it. I also will use a a plan loop back concho too and then put a Chicago screw in from of the concho like these straps I have tried conchos with just the screw back and have not found a good way to keep the spur button from showing (to me it is not a clean look with it showing behind the main strap) or from having the screw back work lose. I do like the two or three Chicago screws placed around the concho so that you can put you spurs on them put on the concho (making it much easier to get your spurs on the strap) I would also like to say that I have found that when you use a concho that it is easy to make the straps to big. This happens because the hole for the spur button is not in the middle where it would be normally, but can be a inch longer, specially if your button is behind the main body of your straps. Mark
  2. Robyn Here is how I do mine Here is a concho I have made I like these because you can keep the spur button behind the concho like this. here is anther way for straps with out a concho but where you still do not want to see the spur button. I hope these help some. Mark
  3. Casey I like Steve's points very well. I like the one style just because I like to see how many different ways there might be to make the same think more less, with that said I did not mean that this was what you should do. I just did not like the way the chap's were judged at Sheridan. but it one mans likes and dislikes. I really like the way you do the judging it really sounds like the winner is the right one at the show. Mark
  4. Casey I think chinks will be the most widely used and made style out there for all parts of the country. They can sure be made to fit what your trying to do I think. For me if I was to compete I would like to make chinks because I can sell them about any where to anyone. I would need a outlet for what ever I make. I really like the idea of one kind or style. Mark
  5. Robyn I can get you some pictures next week of how I do mine. hope that will help. Mark

  9. Jason They look nice. How did the fit? Mark
  10. HI They all look very nice. there is only one thing I see and that is this, would not use a knot in both ends of a mecate. I use them all the time here at the ranch on all my snaffle bits and hackamores. I like a small loop around a narrow popper at one end and a knot at the other end. the reason is that if you get bucked off the loop end will come out of your belt easier. I hope this make sense Mark.
  11. HI I make tack and use mostly a veg-tan for the main body's and line with latigo. I tool a lot of mine so I need something that tools well and veg-tan works good for that. Lining is not a must but it will make it look more professional and it also help to repel sweat better. That is why I use latigo as it does a good job with the sweat thing. If not tooling then a good harness leather will work fine and the "English" bridle leather is a great choice as well. I hope this helps some. Mark

  18. Tim Well said I would have to agree. I wish I would have had some one show me some about making them I just seen pictures and made them then when they did not fit right I tried it a different way till I got what I make now. it sure was the long way to learn LOL. Mark
  19. Deb Thanks for the kind words on the DVD. I am not saying that I do it right but I have had no problems with how I do them. I have spent many hours testing my pattern for sure and have learned much about how to measure and apply them to fitting the chinks. I will say that it is an on going learning process for sure. Mark
  20. Hi I have used them both ways and made them both ways. I will say this that I have not ever had a problem with sitting on the buckles at all. I have not just made and used them for weekend riding but have cowboyed all day in them. I do not think that there is a right way or a wrong way to do this But I am not sure. I do believe that you have to take good measurements and make them fit right no matter how you do the buckles. To me most that have trouble with the buckles have a fitting problem more that anything. IMO Mark
  21. I will say this that there is money to be had in patterns if your willing to share them. I sell patterns now and people are just as willing to spend money on patterns as they are the finished product.there are those that need patterns to learn from and those that will not make but buy the finished product. make money two ways.
  22. Thanks Ruth I have not got to film much this winter so the next DVD is still aways out. I do have some film for the Spur Strap Making DVD but have more to film. We are putting together a very nice carving pattern pack for our chap yokes and side panels. These patterns are drawn up by some you all know like Troy West, Steve Brewer, Clay Miller, Bob Park, Andy Stevens, and Bruce Johnson. Here is a pattern by Troy West that will be in this pack. We hope to have this out in May so stay tuned. Mark
