  1. Hello, I have a dilemma. I am looking for a good brown to dark brown dye. I used fiebings pro oil dyes in the past with good results, but I do not like how toxic they are, and won't be using them. I looked into Tandy's Eco-Flo dyes, and in doing research, I found a leatherworker.net thread with a bunch of people talking about how they had ruined projects by the dye turning a greenish color, and I don't want to chance that. I actually spent a lot of time and effort brewing a batch of black walnut dye a few weeks ago, and I am not at all happy with the results. It takes WAY too many applications to get to dark brown, and WAY too much time (oiling, then waiting for it to dry, applying the dye, and waiting for it to dry, repeat). I have tried multiple ways of dying the leather with the black walnut dye, only to get disappointing results. Long story short, I would like a brown/dark brown low VOC leather dye that is not fiebings pro oil dye, or tandy Eco-Flo. Any suggestions? Thanks! Zayne

  3. Hi Everyone After having more than one horrible and I mean horrible experience with buying supplies from small time vendors I felt compelled to praise Tandy. Wish I could pour my heart out to you all but for fear of reprisals I won't at least for now. I was naive in thinking most leather people are good folks like the members on this form. Sadly I have been proven wrong. Anyhow still in need of supplies my husband and I drove the more than two hour trip one way to our "local" Tandy in Baltimore. Not only was the store in a nice new location. Their stock was fantastic! Even the economy sides where really great. They were having a sale so the prices were better than I found anywhere else. They are even better this weekend for anyone who can get to one. The staff were helpful and nice and best of all I know if I do have a problem they will make good on it. The few times I have had to exchange or return something they have dealt with it promptly and courteously. All in all a wonderful experience especially after the things I experienced this summer. I used to save up my money all year so I could shop in person from small vendors at a large reenactment event I attend. Even paying a bit more for things was OK because it felt good to help out small vendors but not anymore. I am done with that. Tandy gets my business from now on at least the Baltimore store has never done me wrong. Thanks for listening have a great weekend everyone, Cheers, Toolingaround

  5. I feel like I need to make sure that my expectations are reasonable regard to quality and wholesale price of raw vegetable tanned leather. For about a year now, I have been buying (as a Gold member) Tandy's 8-9 oz. European bends for about $80 each. I purchased 3 of these bends about 45 days ago at that price. Today, I learned that my prices went from $80 each to $150 each. I use the European bends because I require super clean stock for the products that I make. The European bends are roughly 30" x 50" with about 10% waste max on the hides that I buy (every 3rd piece in the store is superb quality, and those are the ones I get). I realize that the drought last year caused some fluctuation in the market, but did prices double within just a few months? Another issue—which might just be on the local level—is I feel like I have to HAGGLE to get competitive prices. One example: Springfield sells quart Fiebing's for $30 retail, Tandy for $40 retail (elite is $30). Their snaps are like $50 for 100, which I have managed to get for $18/100 on a price match. I'm getting weary of dealing with Tandy. How can the expect a future if they only cater to the hobbyists? Am I unreasonable? Please help me if I'm way off here. I really want to be realistic.
  6. A few weeks ago I bought a Tandy Pro strap end punch in 1 1/2 inches on sale at what I though was a good price. I needed a new one as I made the mistake of buying a used one on eBay that ended up being useless as the previous owner had screwed up the edge on it. I finally got around to trying out the new punch a couple of weeks later on a belt I was making for my son. Well when I laid the punch down where I wanted, the edges of the punch were no where close to the belt edges, I knew I had cut a 1 1/2 inch strap from the hide but thought maybe I messed up so I measure the strap and it was 1 1/2 inches. Then I measured the Tandy punch and found out it was not even close to 1 1/2 inches, I looked at the stamping on the punch and it said 1 1/2". I took the punch back to Tandy and told them what happened, the store manager took another punch and measure it and it was also larger than stated. Ends up that NONE of the punches they had were of proper dimensions, they were all more than 1/8 of an inch bigger than indicated on the punch. Luckily the store manager gave me a refund. I have no idea how Tandy stays in business, the punches all say "made in the USA" but the packaging shows the dimensions in metric terms and the punches are stamped with SAE measurements. Since I still needed a punch I called SLC and added one to my next order, I know it will be the correct size.

    New Tandy Store

For those that live in South Texas, Tandy has just opened a new store in Corpus Christi. It is a large store, clean and appears well stocked. Much better than the one I went to in Houston when I lived there.
  8. Hello, I'm a noob who wants to make a satchel. I got a quarter shoulder hide and some soft pigskin for lining. I still need the basic tools. I have some black Feibings dye that I used on some suspender button attachments for pants. I also got some coffee color Eco Flo from Tandy. What's the main difference in these brands?
  9. I've had it for a year now and have only used it 3 or 4 times. It's a Osborne clone I believe. I just don't have the strength to pull the leather through it! I may put it up on Ebay but I thought I'd let my friends here have a chance at it first. If anyone is interested, I am asking $275.00 plus actual shipping. Just send me a message at my Email: blackriverlaser@gmail.com Thank you! Joyce~ It has a wooden handle instead of the cast iron one like in the picture.
  10. I have a vintage Tandy 4412 Guardian Shotgun Case Kit for sale, dating from 1983. The kit, for a sheepskin leather case with acrylic pile and foam lining, is in excellent condition and includes all necessary parts (see note), an instruction manual, and a carving pattern. The carving pattern includes full-size templates of the leather pieces and could be used to make additional cases of the same design. The very small zipper pull piece is missing, but a template for the piece (easily cut) is present in the carving pattern, and I have included a piece of leather to use for this piece. Satisfaction is guaranteed, or the item may be returned within 30 days (unused, in the original packaging) for a full refund. Asking price: $97.00
  11. Hi my friends, I took advantage of purchasing the Tandy craftool press while it was on sale this month. I've been wanting to buy one for years and the price seemed better this month. I made up a quick lasered tool holder that keeps all the dies I bought very handy. I am sure one could be easily be made out of wood or other materials. What do you guys do? I am open for good ideas. Thanks, Joyce~ DIES_STAND.pdf
  12. Got an email from Tandy today, like happens every Friday, and their new line of tools is now available. Included in the new offerings are their two new swivel knives with either 3/8" or 1/2" barrels. Anyone got to see and touch these in real life yet? Do you think they will be able to compare to the likes of Barry King swivel kinives? Would like to know if they are going to be a suitable upgrade from their basic models. I won't be in a Tandy store for a while, so any early opinions will be appreciated. JJ
  13. For several years now, I've been a member of Tandy's Wholesale Club at the $35 Gold Level. I've always been curious about the break-even point of this membership -- ie, how much I have to spend at Tandy in order to start saving money. Yesterday, I renewed my membership and purchased $111.98 worth of merchandise. I did the math, and this stuff would have cost $136.27 at retail. This ended up being an 18% savings (or $24.29). Looking at the individual line items, it seems Tandy offers Gold Members a 20% discount on most hardware, dyes, glues, etc. The savings on leather is somewhat less: the discount appears to hover in the area of 10-15%. Obviously, the break-even point varies based on the mix of products you purchase. But for anyone considering the Wholesale Club, my math indicates an average 18% savings for Gold Members. So, it appears you have to spend roughly $200 at Tandy before you recoup the $35 membership fee.
