Hello, I'm a complete beginner in leatherworking, but I was recently inspired to give it a shot. I'm attempting to make a simple wallet, which I intend to dye navy blue with a white-gold coloured design on the front. Unfortunately, I live in a small city in Canada and leather supplies are quite expensive here. So, I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before buying the supplies. Hopefully you folks can help me with that. My first problem is deciding which finish to use. It's a wallet and going to be handled frequently, so I need something that really seals the dye. I would probably be using Tandy's Eco-Flo dye, because it's reasonably priced and available in the colours I need. I also live in a climate that snows a lot, so I'd prefer to use something water resistant. I've looked at acrylic resolene, which looks good for both water resistance and dye sealing, but I want to avoid anything that looks shiny or plasticy. So, what type of finish should I be looking for here? My next question is about combining dyes. Let's say I'm dyeing it navy blue, and I've got black and blue dyes to work with. Should I combine the dyes first, or simply apply a few black layers to the leather, and then a few blue layers, etc, until I get the desired colour? Could I do both? Combine the dyes first to make a navy blue, then proceed to apply additional coats of blacks or blues until the I get the desired colour? Lastly, I'm not sure what I should do about the coloured design on the front. Let's say I dye the leather navy blue and let it dry. I now want to add the white-gold design on top of it. How should I do this? I thought about using stencil paper, but if I apply the dye with some kind of brush or cloth, I wouldn't be able to keep the stencil in place. Also, I'm not sure if the colour would turn out, considering I would be placing a light dye over a dark one. Perhaps it would be fine? I've never dyed leather before, so I wouldn't know. I've attached an image I've photoshopped demonstrating how I'd like the finished product to look. Again, I'm a leatherworking novice and I'm not sure if this sort of thing would even be possible. I'd appriciate any thoughts you have. Thanks!

Hello All! I am new to leather crafting but I have fallen in love with it! I have a gazillion projects in mind but here are the first few projects I completed. Please help me become better with any tips, critiques, or thoughts you might have! I study Budo Taijutsu and so I made these for myself to replace my worn out items: Japanese Tabi (split toed boots) Kyahan (basically like shin guards and to cover the pant legs) It looks like I will have to add the other projects as replies because I hit the limit.

Hi everyone, finished a simple money clip wallet the other day and just wanted to share 2-3 oz Hermann Oak natural leather, Homemade wax/oil mix for finish. Burnished edges. Monogrammed it later (not in photo). This was very quick wallet to make. took about 5-10 minutes. Pockets hold around 3 cards each, and money clip is good for around 10+ bills. Let me know what you think!

Haven't posted in a while. Day job gets in the way sometimes. Made this purse for my wife for our anniversary and she LOVED it. It's made from 4oz oil tanned. My first purse. I really like this leather. The wallet is made from the same material for a musician friend of mine. Not perfect by any means. Still trying to get a handle on the lacing. The "Jerry's" pad is for a local gun shop. When you ask to look at a firearm in the glass case. They lay this pad on top of the glass counter as to not bang the weapon on the glass. I actually am making a dz of these for his new shop. Each will be a little different design. Nothing crazy. The sunburst was almost too much for him. haha! They measure 15"x10". The shotgun shell pouch is for an old friend back home. It is made from tanned elephant ear. His grandfather harvested the animal back in the 70's on a safari hunt. The logo is for the skeet/trap club he owns. And the hawk sheath is for a coworker just in case the zombies come. The tomahawk is from 2Hawks. They make really good stuff at a fair price if you're in the market. So that's it. Thanks for looking! Eddie.

I had some leftover Crocodile left over from a watch band I made so I decided to make a wallet. I tried to get it black with some dye, and I knew it would take more than one application. After the first application, I knew I had to use the color that ended up on the leather. I fell in love. I used royal blue .8mm Tiger Thread at 3mm spacing. It came out matching the shell pretty well but it pops against the black lining. The lining is made from Black glazed veg-tan leather I bought to make briefcases and handbags from. I split it down to 2oz with my Tandy splitter and also thinned the edges with my tabletop belt sander. I thought the edges would be too chunky if I didn't thin them a little. Finally, the edge paint is Tandy Pro Edge Paint. I used my Radio Shack soldering iron to massage the edges and sanded them as well. All in all, it took about 5 coats with sanding between and finally melting with the soldering iron. I really need to get the attachments for the soldering iron so I can put a nice ridge at the very edge.

I'm new to leather working, about four months. It has been incredible finding this website, the knowledge and helpfulness of subscribers is priceless. I want to make a wallet for my younger brother for his birthday. He uses a ti-fold, full size now, lots of cards slots, (think George Castanza from Seinfeld)! I am not sure which thickness leather, and does anyone have a template they would be willing to share? Thanks in advance.

I have been looking for a replacement wallet for some time, and this one seems to be suitable. However I am having problems getting the dimensions correct when printing onto A4 paper not Letter (11 x 14). http://www.artofmanliness.com/2012/11/30/how-to-make-a-wallet/ If someone has made one or knows dimensions or even of a better wallet, I would be most appreciative.

OK, I am a newbie here but when I told a co-worker that I was doing some leather stuff he said he wanted a new money clip. I have also been wanting one so I'll "practice" on the first one and if it looks OK when I am done he will be my first customer! We both have similar money clips now, let me see if I can explain this without a pic. It is 2.75" wide, by 4" tall, with three card size pockets, the two outside pockets appear to be sewn onto the face and the middle pocket is about 3/16" in height and is collapsible due to the soft leather sewn between the two outer pocket assemblies. It has a 1.5" x 6" strip of leather with magnets sandwiched between leather and what appears to be a thin soft leather (or pleather.) One end of this assembly is sewn in between an outer layer and a lining on one side of outer pocket. The two outer pockets are then attached together via a 3/4" piece of soft leather between them, creating the collapsible pocket mentioned in the third paragraph. I am trying not to tear my wallet apart to make my template for the new one, so I am asking for some pointers on the best way to figure out what size to start out. Anyone have a template for something very similar? Any other info you can throw my way would be appreciated very much. I have some remnants that I believe are about 3-4 oz veg tanned and some 1-2 oz mission grain lining (hope this works) I am not planning on doing very much tooling on this one, maybe doing some basket weave on one corner of the outer pockets . Thanks in advance, Terry

HI - I'm looking for advice on finishing my wallets with the edging/lining like that of the wallet in the attached pictures. I have the leather i want and have it thinned to a workable gauge, but am having problems with how to sew/cut to form neatly around the edges. Any help with technique or steps would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
